Question 3M Carbon Fiber Overlay

Has anyone really worked with this? Is it easy? Look real? Worth the cash? You guys like it or should I look into something else?

My brother has used some. in limited applications it can be ok. keep it to small areas and simple curves.

personally, I don't like fake carbon fiber, but as it goes, this stuff is the most realistic I've seen.

Opinions are like ...holes.

Bottom line, it's YOUR car. Derbagger is correct, not very good for compound or extreme curves.

PM sent.

Tryed to put overlay crap on. Angry and disappoint. Wound up buying new CF pattern pieces from subaru genuine parts. Happy.

it gives the carbon fiber look without a super steep price tag.

carbon fiber crap is mostly for looks anyway(aside from dry carbon, but nobody has that), so who cares? It's all "ricer" in the end, so if all you care about is the look of it, I say do it.

I would not go that far. carbon fiber is not ricer my friend. the fact that it is so light weight, so high in strength and VERY low thermal expansion is what makes it so dam good. i mean why do you think carbon fiber is used in sports, such as hockey, baseball, biking, its ridiculous, the military. why do you think the mercedes SLR's entire body is constructed of carbon fiber?

i do not know what you are speaking of when you say carbon fiber crap is mostly for looks anyway, yea of course carbon fiber things such as trim fog lights, but when you get down and dirty you really save weight and gain performance from all angles, even if its just wet carbon. but wet carbon is used for MANY things such as the ones i stated above. but when you compare 3M Carbon to a REAL carbon fiber contruction, they have NO comparison. real carbon is always the way to go

i laugh at your nocense rant of spewed poo-poo. yes carbon has some of the properties you speak of; stength and thermal expansion, but weight savings is not always there. expecialy when being compaired to light weight aluminum

so you don't understand why some CF parts are crap; because they are fiber glass wrapped in CF to appear to be a true CF part, and offten use the wrong type of resin system. Hence they are over weight peices of junk. They will not save weight and will only have the bling factor that 3m, or similar product can provide at a fraction of the cost

The SLR is made out of CF so they can collect the heft half million price tag for the POS

They only way CF would be the way to go is if you wreck your car and are going to rebuild it, why is that you may ask? Because replacing oem parts is usally more expesive than getting after market CF parts

i could go on an on but the tone def are the only listeners

the 3M cf overlay definitely looks better and feels better than the other cf overlays i'd played with(re neffy wrap). if u ever sat in a BMW with the dry carbon trim pieces, it's almost identical in texture and feel. the plus side is the cf overlay is a peel and stick application, so u dont have to mess around with spray on glue like the neffy wrap do, but the down side is if ur wraping trim pieces that has many curves, like the bezel around the radio and the av vent ring, it's gonna be a pain in the ass, because the 3M overlays r vinyl, and its not as flexible as the neffy wrap(fabric). it's gonna take a lot of patients.

(were talking about cars here, not random other things that have "bits" of carbon in them)

Wet carbon weighs more than replacing the parts with aluminum. 3 parts fiber glass and 1 thin layer of carbon does NOTHING other than look cool. DRY carbon is the only carbon fiber that has any REAL (and by real i mean noticeable) difference - but there is a huge increase in price for true single layer dry carbon.

A customer at the speed shop I work for brought in a Carbon Fiber hood for his m3 and wanted it installed. For ****s and giggles we tossed the wet carbon hood (pretty sure it was a Seibon hood) on our shipping scale to compare against his stock aluminum hood. The difference was 5 pounds, in favor of the aluminum. We called him up, and he sent it back.

My car has REAL carbon fiber parts on it. I have a carbon fiber front and rear bumper, hood, trunk, mirrors, fenders, and I plan on finishing the entire exterior later this year (doors, skirts, roof, and rear quarter panels). It safes alot of weight. It also looks good. I have some pics on I-Club under the same screen name. Will upload pics with the carbon fiber fenders on it.

the 3m carbon overlay looks better than any other cf trim stuff i've seen. its not cheesy or ricey....its very subtle.

its extremely easy to work with. you can literally crumple it into a ball, and with heat pull it and undo any creases or crumples in it.

I like it. Didn't take too long. An exacto, heat gun, and a LOT of patience and you're set.

+1. I think it looks pretty good. Dan's a good vendor too, bought a few things from him.

I'm pretty new at this; I think if I could do it, anyone could. It took me about three hours total including dis-assembly and re-assembly of the dash. I did NOT use adhesion-promoting primer, but if you want it to stick really permanently, you should.

I also took off the little button plates on the steering wheel. To do it, remove the clamshell parts of the steering column, then pull back the rear steering cover enough to access the single screw that holds on each little button plate.

I trimmed the wrap to expose the "on" and "off" markings on the vent controls.
