Default IL: any fall photo friendly spots around Chi-Town (possible group photoshoot?)

I'm looking to wash/wax the car one last time before winter and take some pics on a nice backdrop. If anyone knows of a spot please PM me or post within this thread with the details. If others want to show up that works too - I can use the extra snapshot practice

I'm eyeing Saturday November 6th as a possible date.

there is a ton of very pretty little spots up sheridan rd there is one that comes to mind that might be a great spot is't on Sheridan rd probably 3-4 miles after you turn to avoid being on Lakecook rd. you drive down into a revine on the lake and the lot is surrounded by trees should be beautiful right now.

You could also try the penisula that the Adler planetarium is on by the lakefront. You can get a pretty good Chicago skyline background from that location.

Lower Wacker would give you an opprotunity to get some good night shots of cars driving by. Of course you'd actually have to get out of your car and stand down there, but the pictures could be pretty good if taken in the rebuilt parts.

The water tower may be another good spot, but you couold probably only get a clear shot at around 3 in the morning.

Also look at the parking lots along Lake Shore Drive. In the afternoon you could get some nice pictures of your car in front of the lake. There are also nice parks along Sheridan you could try.

There are also some nice state roads in Indiana I know about that would have some good photo opportunities with the trees turning, not to mention being fun to drive.

On weekends empty industrial building parking lots are good shots. If you're looking for more scenic along Sheridan is good (like others mentioned). Also, if you have local forest preserves those can be nice too. Tops of empty parking garages can be cool too.

Just be careful of security if you're going to go onto building parking lots/decks... they dont' always like people 'playing around' there.

Nirmit-if you decide to take some shots locally, please let me know. I don't think I have the luxury of driving downtown, but if its nearby I'd like to get my car's picts
taken...not that there's anything really special on it though..

Instustial and subruban parking lots are overdone; every wannabe ricer/photographer goes there 'cause they're afraid of the big bad city or the wide open countryside.

I still think Lower Wacker at night would get some good pictures, plus I can get there in about 20 minutes.

Or one of the Chicago River birdges.

Ooh, ooh
picture time. I am in if you guys decide on a location. We can make it a nice fun drive. I think I prefer some fall colors and nature backdrop before a city background, but whatever works out for everybody should be fine by me.

I'll check out the Adler and Sheridan this weekend

Andy,
Any further directions on the location off Sheridan?

Ken,
I'll let you know about a local spot. I'm sure I'll be quite the shutterbug this fall/winter.

well if you come via Lake Cook rd you go east untill you come to the light where you either go straight onto Sheridan, or you turn left onto Sheridan. You want to turn left. after that you kind of have to wind around a bit. IIRC it is after the second time you have to basically stop and make a 90* turn (the first being by Revinia) then right after you turn you go up a hill then you go back down a large grade and in the valley or maybe just as you start up the other side is the entrance. I can't remember the name of the park, but there is a pretty large sign. If you make it to down town Highland Park you went to far. there is also some sort of water treatment building there also so maybe you'll see a sign for that to.

Man those are horrible directions If I'm in the area sometime this week I'll try to get better directions, I haven't been there in over a year so it's kind of hazy in my mind.

I have to go into work for a while on Saturday and the house I'll be at is just off of Lake east of 94 so I'll be somewhat in the area if you would want to meet up and drive up to that spot, or just take a nice drive in general. What's the weather suposed to be like this weekend?

You're talking about the Park Ave. Beach, right? The easier way to get to it is to take 41N to the Central Rd exit. Stay straight on Deerfield/Central Rd. until you pass over the train tracks. At that stop sign turn left and make the first right on the next street (no stop sign there). I do believe there is a street sign, but it's hard to see or on the other side of the street. Follow that road all the way down. You'll go through some houses and over a narrow bridge and then you'll come to a very steep, windy downgrade (which, if you have someone to block the entrance would make a GREAT photo-op!). Follow that down and head to the right at the stop sign at the bottom and you'll see a building (water plant/pub works). Curve around it and you'll see the boat ramp and around to the left is a parking area that backs right up to the lake. It's a great place to take pics, esp if you catch it around sunset. BUT be careful 'casue they shut down the roads (there's a one-way back up the hill too, also a great shot). In fact, they may already be shut down to 'pedestrians'. But it's worth the drive... and if you can't get in there's other nice spots along North Sheridan and South Sheridan (out by Glencoe and Evanston). Way far north is this huge power plant (past Fort Sheridan) and if you could get up there and snap a few pics it would be really cool.

Post where you decide to go... maybe I'll tag along and take some of my car (and maybe Greg too... with his car).

Post Whore Man... up up and away!
Those first pictures look like they were taken in Osaka Gardens down by the Museum of Science and Industry. You should go there for a meet, it being all Japanese and stuff.

The only good woodland scenes I know are all down in Indiana, about 2-3 hours away. A nice drive and pretty low volume traffic, but I see the time needed being too much for most people. Let me know where you do decide to shoot; I could use an artistic image of the wagon. Being in Evanston means I can get up Sheridan pretty quickly.

It's supposed to rain this weekend, BTW...

Butterfile.. that sounds like it's probably the same spot, your directions off of central seem like they are going the wrong way out of highland park, but maybe i just missed a turn. if you go the central rout wouldn't you go all the way to where the metra station is then turn right? That's the road that eventually turns into Sheridan isn't it? Maybe that's what you were saying, but I just didn't follow to well.

If you are looking for a great spot to get a shot of the lake behind the car, Kenilworth has a few lake front culdesacs that are amazing. Just drive up Sheridan, North of Evanston and look to your right. It's a nice drive anyway. Try some shots before the sun comes up. Early early. Watch for cops though. Some of the culdesacs are "private" whatever that means. They will give you a hassle if you look suspicious.

Also, in Evanston, there is the Bai-hai temple. Misspelled. If you have a 24mm or wider, you might be able to get the dome in there with your car.

There's also the Botanical Gardens. Peak color should be this weekend or next weekend. After that, I think the trees are going to start to get a little thin.

Last spot I can think of is a place called the Skokie Lagoons. North on Green Bay Road, north of Evanston, turn left (West) on Tower Rd. Keep driving until you get to ?? street just before the highway (I-94). Sorry, can't remember the name of the street. But head North on it and the lagoons will be on your left (to the West). But if you google Skokie Lagoons you will find it. There are a few lakes separated by Tower Rd. Highway is to the West of the Lagoons. So if you shoot at sunset, with your car in the fg and the lakes in the bg, you will get some nice color. If you use a tripod and have Photoshop, you can do a double exposure. Expose once for your car, once for the trees in the background, and once for the sky. Then combine in PS. Or if you have a graduated filter, you can combine the last two shots into one. Afterwards, there are great trails all though there. Bring a map if it is your first time. Lots of deer. Very tame and curious. But weekends bring the tourists.

Best of luck!

Oh! Just thought of another good spot. Oak Brook Mall has a great spot to shoot a car in year round. If you drive towards the Mario Tracocci place, drive past the parking garage in toward the mall, there is a loading and unloading zone area. Big wide open area with bricks instead of pavement. Usually cars don't drive in there because it is mostly a people area. I don't think there are curbs there. It's a very intersting spot that begs for a ladder. If you have one of those four hinge ladders that fits into a car trunk, BRING it. Then shoot down onto your car to catch the bricks in the background. Should look very cool if the lighting is right.

I shoot pictures for a living and I can tell you that every time that I have shot at a mall, I have been stopped. I'm a clean shaven professional looking individual, who looks like he knows what he is doing, and I still get hassled every time, even if I have permission. So I would definitely call the mall security office, and be honest, and tell them that you are a photographer and you want to take some shots of a car for an automotive enthusiast website and tell them where you want to do the shoot. Tell them that it won't take any longer than 20 or 30 minutes. They will meet you there, ask to see if you have any credentials (you can make some and print them out), and then they will leave you alone.

Hope this helps!
