Report: Is a Jeep Grand Cherokee Hellcat actually going to happen?
A new rumor surfaced regarding the Jeep Grand Cherokee by way of MotorAuthority and according to the latest development, a tip surfaced suggesting Jeep may actually get around to producing a Hellcat-powered Grand Cherokee to sit above the SRT model.
Yup, you read correctly, prospects for a 707hp Hellcat Grand Cherokee are in the works.
Not much is known about this supposed Hellcat Grand Cherokee, other than speculation that it could be called the “Trackhawk.”
The idea would be slotting the Charger/Challenger Hellcat’s supercharged 6.1L V8 under the hood, with a ZF eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
Given that this powertrain setup already exists for the Charger, chances are it wouldn’t be that hard to adapt the powertrain to the fitment of the Grand Cherokee.
What do you think of the idea of a 707hp Hellcat-powered Grand Cherokee?
Let us know in the comments.

Are there any other applications of the AWD system in vehicles with Hellcat levels of torque? I guess if the transmission is already up to it in RWD application it'd just be a matter of toughening up relatively simple driveshafts/halfshafts.

I don't think any existing PTU's can handle the power. IIRC the talk was the Trailhawk would be RWD.

Its supposed to be AWD and hit 60 in 3 seconds The Cherokee SRT starts at $65k which would put this around what? $80k? For a JEEP? As fun as that sounds, anyone who would buy that over a supercharged Range Rover Sport would need to get their head examined.

If the drive train holds up this wouldn't be a bad purchase in 2 years when the first owner realizes how expensive the thing is on gas, tires, and up keep.

I don't know. There may be less to worry about with the Jeep, plus cheaper maintenance in the long run. Of course the brand cache will be absent, but good luck with that RR out of warranty! I know LR is improving, but I wouldn't put them as "reliable" quite yet.

It would still be heaps more reliable than a Range Rover, which doesn't say much for Chrysler.

Thats why God created warranties! I don't know a single RR owner who has kept theirs past their warranty.

MERICA!!! (no snark)

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT has been the best selling model in the SRT lineup. I guess $65K is not too much to pay for a Jeep. I bet that $80K will not be too much to pay for a 707HP Jeep that can run 0-60 mph in 3 secs. The Range Rover Sport Supercharged model has 500HP and starts at $80K. The SVR model has 550HP and starts at $110K.

I think the question should be: As fun as that sounds, anyone who would buy a Range Rover Sport Supercharged over the Trackhawk would need to get their head examined. I would definitely buy a $80K TrackHawk over a $80K Range Rover Sport Supercharged. I think other Hellcats are produced in limited numbers and this should be no different for the Trackhawk.

My non-SRT Hemi gets 12mpg so I'm guessing this would be in the single digits.

Well, one is a Range Rover and one is a JEEP lol. I suppose you would take a Dodge Charger SRT over a BMW 535i too right?

If the drivetrain holds up for 2 years? You mean if the whole car holds up lol. Only benefit is Jeep's depreciate ridiculously fast so you might score one cheap. My roommate has had two Jeeps, they are God awful vehicles. I'll just leave this here

lol...can you at least find an article about this vehicle? I guess not since it isn't released yet.

It is a probably 70-90k 700 HP SUV....anyone that thinks cost of ownership is going to be low OR that it's going to get good MPG is living in a wet dream. The article you posted said Jeep is a bad buy due to the Cost Index or some made up equation they created.

Can you find some other cool stereotypical articles like how trucks are bad daily commuters, Audi's are expensive out of warranty, Subaru has bad paint, and VW has electrical problems.

I think the Hellcats and Trackhawks will be in a completely different category. Due to limited production, at least in the first year, people are buying them at above MSRP and setting them aside as instant collector cars.

The second gens Grand Cherokee SRTs are holding their values pretty well compared to the non-SRT versions.

I like BMWs and the 535i is a very nice car indeed, but if I'm spending my hard earn money on one of the two above, I would consider the Charger SRT and here's why.

Cost

First, the BMW 535i starts at $56k MSRP and the Charger SRT starts at $48K MSRP. You're still spending more for the base 528i at $50K MSRP. The cost difference continues to expand from there when comparing what's standard equipment on these two vehicles. Add on the higher cost of ownership for the BMW compared to the Dodge. Cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching.

Performance

No question, the SRT is faster in a straight line. A quick Google search will prove that. Around a corner? The BMW will probably feel more refined, but the Dodge will still be faster. Remember, the Charger is based on the bones of the Mercedes E Class and there are real go fast parts all around the SRT.

Attention

I'm not going to discuss style, since that's subjective, so I'm going to try how much attention the two will get. At least in the DC area where I'm from, BMWs are everywhere and they don't get a second glance unless it's an M5. The Charger SRT definitely stands out in any crowd, in almost every part of the country.

I don't want this to come off as picking on you or anyone is particular. You posed a question, in jest I get it, and I'm just trying to answer it. In the end, no one should tell someone else how one should spend their money. This is just how I would spend mine and why.

Cheers.

one person's stereotype is anthers judicious application of statistics and observations I guess.

All of these are mostly true, depending on context

That's not even remotely true. Jeeps hold their values ridiculous well, especially Wranglers. Repairs and insurance are what drive ownership costs up. I don't think you can with a straight face compare a Jeep to a Range Rover and say the RR is more reliable though.

I was wondering. I have seen 2-3 year old Jeeps going for the same price or more than new ones just because some tool put on a cheap set of pretend bead locks and some cheap knobbies.

yeah, we get it BRO!, you're a total badass.

That said, I'm going to pick up a Jeep tonight that took a total hit on depreciation just because it's pink. Meh, I can paint it.

Well Consumer Reports lists Jeep as the worst car value and they are also the 4th worst brand for reliability according to CR. Land Rover didn't make either list. So yes, I can with a straight face say a RR is more reliable. Unless you have some data Ive never seen proving CR's findings wrong?

Ive owned a Dodge. A 2005 300C and I couldn't wait to get rid of it. The first 12k miles were ok and then it just went downhill fast. Squeaks, rattles, sealing around the doors coming off etc...Not to mention it was filled with plastic, the seats sucked and the interior was sub par. My friend has a 2012 (non Hemi) and it appears not much has changed. You couldn't pay me to own another Dodge, especially if I can have a BMW 5 series for right around the same price
