Default Flyboy1100's engine out thread

Here is phase 1, a 2013 FB20 with 24k on it....

Why?:
Current engine has begun consuming oil at exponential rate, tons of blowby, etc at about 155k miles as of today

Current plan/need to purchase:
1. 13lb flywheel and brz clutch
2. Boroscope the inside
3. Kreen soak cylinders
4. All new hoses, belt, plugs etc
5. prep the ac compressor for storage
6. Maybe water pump, otherwise just new gasket
7. Rear main seal
8. All Group N mounts, engine, dogbone, transmission
9. Maybe pull valve covers, probably not
10. Coolant
11. Methanol injection???
12. New tune for lightweight flywheel
13. Strip whatever else required off my current engine and open up old engine to see which cylinder/s have the bad rings
14. Swap my block heater over

Already purchased:
1. Flywheel bolts and exhaust gaskets

Going to start with scoping and soaking pistons.

When done this engine will only see 0w-40 oil after 500 mile rinse of something much cheaper

sweet! looking forward to reading about your adventures although this sort of activity is well beyond my capability level so hopefully my engine has a long still ahead of it.

Default Flyboy1100's engine out thread

Gonna be a slow thread here for a few weeks due to doctors orders...... but I managed to get it out of my truck and onto the stand. It rotates pretty easily, will get some pics of the inside next week.

I should have pulled a crank bolt out before putting it on the stand but the flange on the CVT bolts is much much larger than the 5MT. I bet they are the same length however.

Will try to find the cvt cooler pipe if i got it. And for the most part the harness is complete including starter harness. They cut the ground straps however and 1 connection on starter harness, hoping that one is just attached to the car....

It does look like the timing cover might be seeping as well as oil pan? Again pics next week

Looks like the CVT has different (possibly hydraulic) motor mounts.

A teardown of the old engine should be very interesting. If before that point, you want to do a compression test for science, I'll give you my starter mount.

yes, they are different, but I knew that going in. not sure if they are taller or not. most likely going to get Group N's but we will see.

i do plan to get a compression test done, i'm curious, i would like your starter mount, it would be easier on the stand..

wasn't planning to pull front cover, but might end up doing it since it really does look like it is starting to leak

Learned something new today. The '13 has different coil pack connectors than my '12 so i guess those wont be spares for me

5MT flywheel bolts vs CVT Flexplate bolts.

2013 Ignition coils, those of us with 2012's will understand

today's progress (some rotated, sorry)

a few of my pistons before starting Kreen Soak, will let it soak for 36 hours before i get a chance to check it again. so thursday will get some new pics of the pistons.

i didn't get a pic of it before i cleaned, but I am wondering if the oil level sensor is leaking a bit and that is why the top of my oil pan was wet. either way plan to reseal both
there are a couple of coolant hoses on the top of the block but not sure what they are called, need to figure that out so i can get new ones.

What bore scope do you use?

Are you going to lube the bores, or does Kreen take care of that?

It leaves an oily residue behind when you spill it. Was planning to put some mmo in the bores when i was done too. http://www.kanolabs.com/msds/kreen_liquid.pdf

Need to add some oil so I can use one of my 2 old starters to run the compression test.

The scope is just some wifi scope of amazon, but it works pretty well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075CG73S2?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Whats the best way to disconnect the fuel hose? The yard buggered it up and then just cut the hose :/

Not my photo but I believe these hoses are Subaru parts only hoses :/ planning on gates for the rest. They don't seem like in horrible shape, but better safe than sorry over 20ish dollars

Something like this should work:

https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-37000-C...sr_1_6?ie=UTF8

Mine looks like this, but it didn't fit quite right:

https://www.amazon.com/Titan-Tools-5...sr_1_4?ie=UTF8

It looks like unformed heater hose might work for those, but I didn't replace them on my engine.

I have this set already, Lisle 39400 Angled Disconnect Tool Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000W0UZHG..._KrubBbGKHTY9N

But it doesn't fit over the ridge on the pipe, might just have to try a couple of picks??

edit: ordered a CTA 3476

Well, minor update today, good and bad news

Good: Kreen softened up the carbon on the pistons and removed some....

Bad: it also softened the sealant on the other side cam carrier. So now i will be resealing front cover, oil pan, oil level sensor, and cam carriers.......hopefully nothing else. I guess i can check torque on all the rockers now, only seen 1 reported failure of them coming loose

#1 piston

#3 piston, some carbon removed, i think just running the engine would remove the rest as it easily scrapes now

Whoops, kreen created this leak on opposite side

Inside #1 #3 rocker cover

Closer view, about what I expected with only 24k on it. I see i have green valve springs, IIRC those were in place of purple??

I really hope that stuff didn't hurt your head gaskets.

Me too! Might actually soak other side in MMO instead
But it is supposed to be safe, guessing just not safe for rtv/sealants

edit: other side soaked in Kreen for 9 hours, then i dumped it and put MMO in instead. will probably redo both cam carriers just in case of some damage to the RTV.

also need to get some assembly lube for when i reassemble everything. Planning to use Ford TA-31 as my sealant per recommendation of my friend, all he uses on any engine where sealant is specified instead of a gasket

so going back through old pictures etc. I think our 5MT engines have a different upper oil pan than the CVT engines due to extra CVT cooler pipe. so I probably have to pull the upper pan too and swap them, unless there is a plug i can use . edit yup, 2 different pans. pretty sure the 5MT upper pan just isnt drilled for that passage. add 1 more item to the list I need to swap

5MT

CVT
