News Subaru Of America Reports Best-Ever June Sales And Record First Half Results (2019)

  • Best June sales – monthly sales increase 2.8 percent over June 2018
  • 91 consecutive months of yearly, month-over-month growth
  • Best June ever for Outback and Ascent
  • 64 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Outbacks sold
  • 71 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Foresters sold

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 61,511 vehicle sales for June 2019, a 2.8 percent increase compared with June 2018, and the best June sales in the history of the company. Subaru also sold a record 339,525 vehicles in the first half of 2019, up 5.2 percent compared with the same period last year.

June marked the 64th consecutive month of 40,000+ vehicle sales for the automaker. Outback and Ascent sales were notably strong as each model achieved its best June ever. Outback posted an 8.9 percent increase, while Forester posted a 5.7 percent increase compared to June 2018. In addition, 7,014 Ascent SUVs were delivered in June, marking one year since the versatile family hauler arrived at Subaru retailers.

“We are humbled by the hard work of our retailers, employees and distribution partners this June. It is because of their tireless efforts that we can report our 91st month of yearly, month-over-month sales increases and set another half-year record,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO of Subaru of America, Inc. “The Ascent has been a tremendous success for our brand. The 3-row SUV offers the utility today’s customers are seeking and fills a void that had been missing from our line-up for many years.”

“In June, we continued to experience healthy demand thanks in part to Subaru’s combination of value, safety, functionality, and reliability built into all of our vehicles,” said Jeff Walters, Senior President of Sales. “In an increasingly competitive marketplace, we are excited to continue delivering strong results and another month of sales increases.”

Looks like the record will end next month as the margins are getting slimmer and slimmer and getting into months where the Ascent was available last year.

I thought Ascent numbers would be stronger. It hit a ceiling. Look at those ancient Outback numbers. Doesn’t make sense.

Since the Ascent introduction:

June 15% increase
July 7%
Aug 1.4%
Sept 2%
Oct 2.5%
Nov 9%
Dec 2%
Jan 4%
Feb 3.9%
Mar 6.2%
April 7.7%
May 6.4%
June 2.8%

Kinda all over. Going to be interesting. Wondering if they can hold out till the Outback.

Actually, it does when you look at the transaction prices. Outbacks are selling at 20%~25% off of MSRP in some parts of the country. The Forester supply is very tight, Crosstrek supply is somewhat tight and the car is stale. Legacy and Impreza doesn't sell well. It is too soon to discount Ascent heavily as it a new model and they want to preserve the residual value. So they are discounting Outback for a few months as they can control the inventory and keep m-o-m sales record going.

Depends when the 2020's become available. Lots of buyers holding out for them. Am surprised how many are still buying the old gen Outbacks. Almost makes Subaru look smart by not changing the looks too much...

Next month or August I predict. Subaru is back to not being able to produce enough cars. That didn't take long at all.

They seem to have escaped the Gunma production stop, yeah? Maybe another month of impact from that?

Gunma should be on pace soon. SOA claims 700 000 is the salesnumber production is planned for this year without hic-ups.

If the Outback pace keeps up, that shouldn't be too much an issue. We have PLENTY. And plenty of Ascents as well. We were kinda short on Foresters and Crosstreks; but, as of right now, it's not tooo bad.

Why is the Crosstrek doing so poorly when it was redesigned a year ago? I can understand the Impreza since that's a car and car sales as a whole are down, but why has the Crosstrek been selling like crap this entire year...it really doesn't make much sense. It's not like the competition is really any better, they're all crappy ~150hp blobs with CVTs as well.

The new Forester started cannibalizing Crosstrek sales and now even Outback is probably contributing to it. The Crosstrek sales started declining from Dec-2018. You can get a base Forester that is roomier with a bigger engine, same fuel economy and EyeSight for the same price (or less) than a Crosstrek equipped with EyeSight. That is the case with Outback too with all new the incentives in the last two months. Unless you specifically want a car with small foot print and good ground clearance, Crosstrek value is not all that compelling.

Where are all the 3 row Ascent buyers though? This is the first full year out and sales will only decline from here with the competition refreshing their offerings. Subaru loyalists spent their wads so how long before sales fall off a cliff?

Crosstrek is a car for people that aren't really into cars. Thing has mediocre performance, slow, kind of ugly, and cargo capacity is still on the smaller hatchback side.

I much prefer the Forester over the Crosstrek..

CVT in a large SUV will ultimately limit the success of this vehicle. All the other large SUV's in its price range offer proper automatic transmissions.

SOA seems to be happy with these numbers. The 2020 doesn't add a lot to it. I think this is just a waiting game.

Yeah, of all the things I've heard from customers, I haven't heard anything about transmissions. At all. I do hear from them how nice it drives. Very happy with the available power. I have had people mentioning the lower MPGs they are getting. But, they seem to be caring more about ride, visibility, room, and safety. Very clear those are the markers they are looking for.

Nice theory, but inaccurate. Subaru can't make enough Crosstreks to keep up with demand after slowing the lines in Japan to work on quality issues. That's after Subaru lost 10,000 units of production they can't make up for. Subaru's days supply of Crosstrek is 20 days or less.

You are praying for the fail of the Ascent so you can finally be right that making the Ascent was a mistake. Subaru estimated 60k units a year for the Ascent. How long do you think it will be before Subaru isn't hitting that target? fun fact, Subaru sold less than 77k Tribecas in its nearly 10 year run.

I agree, there is a shortage of Crosstrek supply. However, Crosstrek sales started declining even before Subaru paused production for 10 days.

And Crosstek is for people who want the SUV/CUV look and want it cheap. It's an image car because it doesn't have enough power to do dick off road. It remains the funniest Subaru I have ever seen. A got damn Impreza with a lift kit.

Considering an inventory shortage, it would make more sense that Subaru shifted production to the more profitable Forester despite the demand still being high for Crosstrek.

I have the phone numbers of two folks that will give you contrary testimony.

I think it's popularity resides purely in it being lifted. People just don't like sitting low anymore.

100% this. People like my Impreza because it looks good, but the Crosstrek is favored for its commanding view.

And I have phone numbers for owners who call it absolutely gutless.

People don't like sitting low because they are overweight, need to exercise, and put down the sack meals from the windows. "easier to get in and out of", yup because you're a fatass lady!

That's beside the point of what you said. Your statement basically says the Crosstrek is not capable of being offroad. That is inaccurate.

The other part I am sure is the excuse for some people; but, in general?.....well, whatever you want to believe I guess.
