Some of you guys are getting stellar numbers. my 5MT was only averaging about 25-26mpg. I thought that was terrible. I got a car with a little engine to try and get outstanding mpg. I drove an outback with the 2.5 for a week and got the same, if not slightly better mileage compared to the impreza for the same commute. The outback is heavier with a bigger engine and felt quicker. That did it in for me.

I am on my third tank with the GTI, also a 2.0 but has a turbo and it filled up at 29 mpg this morning. I am definitely driving the GTI harder than I was the Impreza as well. I would be in the 22-23 mpg range with the Impreza if I drove it like I do the GTI. 2wd vs awd, but the gti also weighs like 300lbs more and I had the AC on most of the time, whereas with the Impreza I Would try to keep it off since it sucked the mpgeeees down. Subaru dropped the ball by putting too small an engine in the Impreza IMO. They could have gotten better mpgs with a turbo or larger engine and better gearing.

X2. I think with a turbo hitting around the 200 HP range they could consistently get over 30 mpg.

turbo would be tempting, but then again, less mechanically reliable, and I plan on driving 300,000 miles at least with my Impreza. It should do more than that if I live long enough, and keep it around. By then there should be lots of electric cars around watching me drive by lol.

Well said.. If you really try, short shift, with the torque in the GTI - you can be in high thirties easily. Hope your enjoying the car. Good Luck

I just have just under 14,500 miles on my 2013 limited sedan with the CVT, this is after going to and from work for a week about 90% highway and 10% city with relatively light traffic and some construction. I also have a habbit of passing slower cars. Speed limit is posted 50-55 on most of the drive although I do between 55 and 65mph. I feel as if these numbers are pretty good, considerably better then when I purchased the car in late September.
I have seen an increase in the MPG meter from 27-28 in Nov-Dec to 28-30 in Jan-Feb followed by 32-34 in March-April and now in June I have been seeing 34-38 on the meter. I don't use air conditioning frequently and usually roll down the drivers and crack the passenger window. Although I doubt it makes a difference I switched out the Yokohama tires after puncturing/replacing 2 within 6 months, to General Gmax AS tires which I will go on to say are much, much better noise and ride quality wise.

Back on subject here is some proof, picture was taken just after it went down a bar on the gas gauge when I got home from work

Since gas stations have been using ethanol I haven't gone to one of those "NO ETHANOL!!!" gas stations. The ones in my area look kind of sketchy and run down. Plus the gas is at least $0.15 more than the 10% ethanol gas.

Why is it that (at least in my area) the small run down looking gas stations are the only ones selling this? Is it possible the gas may be lower quality?

I know some of these stations get left over gas from name brand places but, to qualify, two years ago I got gas from a cheaper type no name gas station and had to have my injectors cleaned and my fuel filter replaced 4 times before the car ran like normal.

Not sure where your from, but I try to only buy at the local Signal stations ( oil from Arkansas and not overseas) and their 91 octane is the only without ethanol. So that's what I run, and the scubie thanks me for it too! I don't see any correlation to the no ethanol signs and run down stations, other than if you add in a girl and some creepy music it sounds like the making of a good horror flick!!

I guess it depends on who's selling it. 89 octane ethanol free is sold at BP and Marathon in my area. The Marathon station looks newer but it's not a nation-wide brand. The BP has full service pumps available but all you have to do is select the middle button.
At Marathon, ethanol free is on a separate island on an old school pump looking like something I used to pump kerosine from.

Great numbers! Id say the weather had a big influence going from 27-28 in winter to 38 in summer, more so than break-in. Im still rolling on the stock rubber and Id like to think that their advantage is lower rolling resistance then more quality tires. But its good to see good numbers with better tires.

Who would have thought you could actually beat epa estimates with the impreza... blasphemous

Ethanol free is never mid grade in my area

There is additive to deal with the ethanol you can buy at your local auto parts store. I usually carry it with me if I'm out of town and away from a station that carries non-ethanol fuel. Just a thought-

I have some for my small engines, but I think the amount required for a car would be counterproductive, ie cost of bottle more than savings from noon ethanol fuel

It's concentrated, so a few bucks per tank is what it takes. Kinda like the difference between 87 oct with 10% ethanol, and 91 oct without it. If you do not have 91 without ethanol avail its a good backup, for me anyway. You make your own choices. Ethanol soaks up moisture and holds water several times its own weight. It can put water in your tank pretty quick as a result of sitting in tanks at station, trucks, etc. I'm good spending a few extra bucks to keep those issues at bay, and save more $$$$ later. Just an idea, something to consider. After seeing 87 oct melt the fuel lines on my weed eater gumming up the carb, I decided to be proactive all the way around.

I did 89 ethanol free for 10 fill ups at the top of the year but didn't notice any change in mpg's or performance. I stopped buying it when the price got over $4/gal. I felt there were cheaper alternatives to reduce or eliminate the effects ethanol has on the fuel system and engine.

I tried Startron Ethanol just because it was on sale at a Northern Tool store. Kind of pricey though, $10 for an 8oz bottle. That reminds me, I'm waiting on my $2 rebate from them that I sent off almost 3 months ago. I didn't buy anymore and completely forgot about it. I've been using MMO for the last four months, 4oz every fill up at half tank. A 32oz bottle at Walmart is $4.87 and it last for 8 fill ups.

I should have taken a picture of the fuel pump assembly I took out of my (now junked) Camry with 140K miles. Looked like it sat at the bottom of the ocean for 20 years. It was no wonder it stopped working. Ethanol is very bad!

I definitely get better performance (and therefore mpg) with ethanol free. I have a couple of hills I have to climb on my way to work and the difference is very noticeable - with ethanol I can't make it in cruise control in high gear, without ethanol I can.

Filled the tank yesterday. Avg. mileage has gone up to a hand calculated 33.75 MPG. Been seeing a little more stop and go driving and shorter trips than usual and using the AC more. Just turned a little over 2800 miles. Car equipped w/CVT.

Default Big MPG issue

I would like to start a new thread but am unable to due to my post numbers. I am seeing terrible MPG on my 2013 Impreza sport limited and was wondering if I could get some opinions.

I have had the car for about 1 month now and put a little over 600 miles on it. Since I got the car the best tank average I have gotten is 23.6. Now before anyone starts jumping to conclusions I am trying to get the best milage possible.

My daily commute is 80% highway and 20% light town with a small hill or 2. In town the car never sees above 3000 RPM and on the highway the cruise is set at 70 MPH. As a test I reset trip B both going home last night and coming in this morning. To take it to the next level this morning I set the cruise to 65 MPH on the way in and ended up with an amazing 24.1 MPG once I parked.

The last 2 tanks of gas I tired 89 octane and saw no difference. My 4000 + lbs 300hp SUV is currently destroying this car in the MPG category and gets gas from the same wawa.

Has anyone seen this before?
Any recommendations as to what to look at or even how to discuss this with the dealer? I don't want to hear that it is the way I am driving excuse. If I even try to have a little fun with the impreza (not racing it) my mpg drops to about 18 MPG.

Those are horrible numbers, but of course you will have no idea what the car can deliver mpg wise until you break in the engine, anywhere from 3000 to 10000 miles depending upon who you ask.

Here is my first prediction: If you call the dealer before you have 1,000 miles on the engine they are going to say the engine needs to break in before they can examine the low mpg's issue...

i know it takes a engine a while to break in but have had numerous new vehicles. Never before have I seen a MPG hit let alone a ridiculous one like this until the engine "breaks in"

I got a feeling even after 1000 miles nothing is going to improve. My parents have driven nothing but subarus since the mid 90s and have never seen a mpg engine break in hit.

Ok then, call the dealer and report back what they tell you, let's see if I am correct or way off base, lol

Maybe look and see if your brake discs are glowing red hot after your drive?

you most likely are correct in what they will tell me. I still wont be happy with the fact that I have to take about a 30% mpg hit before I can get it looked at. if that is the norm with the other 2.0s that is news to me.

Checked both the brakes and the parking brake.

That's pretty bad.

Maybe check the math? hand calc the mpg and verify odo with gps?

Even during break-in I was well over 30mpg.

Make a note of the rpms at highway speeds. At 65mph I think Im under 2k. (Ill have to check)

when you are on the highway cruising at 70mph on flat ground, what does the instantaneous MPG readout show?

i'm curious to see if it's using the right amount of fuel relative to most others in a controlled scenario (this question above should show something in the mid30s or higher or something is terribly wrong)
