24.3 on this tank.
This is ridiculous, winter or not this is bullshhhh I think there is a MASSIVE variation in the CVT numbers. I cannot break 30 MPG no matter what I do with this car.

Really? What have you done to try breaking the 30 MPG barrier? Have you gone on a long highway road trip with the car? If so, did you fill up and zero the trip odometer just before you left on the trip? Did you lock the cruise control at a speed not exceeding 65 MPG and just cruise?

Mine's not that bad, but it does suck. I have a Scangauge, (.com) and there are other OBDII monitors out there as well, including bluetooth ones that link up to your smartphone. Find a flat section of empty roadway and do two way runs at various speeds - you should be able to get better than 30 at some lower speed. Heck, I can get 50 mpg at 50 mph! If you're going to drive that slowly on a regular highway though you'd better up your life insurance...

And yes, i have the CVT I just wish I knew the MPG was going to be as bad as all previous Subies and I could've saved myself $10k and bought a used 08-09 Outback |

I had looked at Subie's in the past but brushed them off because of poor MPG's. This new Impreza seemed to hit all the right spots and the MPG's were THE most important aspect of me pulling the trigger to purchase one. Sadly, these claims fall way short. Sigh. |

Seeing as how i get high 30s for my overall commute, sub-30 on highway commute seems abnormal. |

Keep in mind they drive it hard in the city most of the time and also finally just checked air pressure after the Low Pressure warning light came on. They have been around 5psi low for a long time. |

The Impreza does pretty well, compared to most cars on the road, and especially when compared to other AWD cars. |

Looking at the average column, only 3 cars beat the Impreza for an Average. Prius C, Chevy Sonic, and the BRZ! (but only by .8mpg) So would you rather have a Sonic geting 29.1 mpg average or the Impreza with AWD getting 26.1mpg (using Edmunds numbers). The Sonic is much too small for my taste. |

Vt has a lot of inclines and mountains so of course that is going to hurt fuel economy amongst other things

Agreed! Yet to break 30mpg even when I went for a 90 mile hwy trip at 60mph. On the interstate I'm lucky to get 25mpg, in the summer, not loaded.

That's interesting. On your 90-mile trip day, was it a hilly road? Did you fill your tank and zero your trip odometer before you left on this trip?

So lifetime mpg values have been between 29.7 and 37 or 38. I can't remember the highest tank average off-hand. I hit 35 to 36mpg often during the summer. |

Nope, not hilly, it's Iowa lol, I had gotten gas the day before had like 4 miles on the tank when I started and filled up on my way home. I really think I'm just one of the unlucky ones.

I'm not really trying to anger anyone here, but our dash gauge has never been below 34 mpg since the day we bought it, almost always between 38 and 42 mpg. the terrain here is very flat. we never use ethanol. When I drive the suba... (rarely) it's with a lead foot, I still get nearly 40 @ 75mph for long distances... flat land. CVT. Seems like some strong inconsistencies with this model. Could it stem from the factory? The last couple of years have been tough for Japan. I dont know just saying.

^ Maybe terrain is playing a much bigger effect on the CVT figures than we expect or realize? Just a thought.

Not in my experience, unless people are resetting the gauge while on the freeway while they are heading downhill when they get the higher numbers. Whenever I borrow my wife's car for long, round trip, jaunts into the mountains for hiking, overall I get good gas mileage. Albeit it may get down to 14-18mpg on the final push up to the top/pass, the 50-90mpg makes up for it coming back down and in the summer I can go over three 3000 foot passes and still average 36mpg for the entire trip 200+ mile trip. What really seems to kill it is short drives, cold temps, speeds above 65mph, lead foots, and winter gas. Its not finicky at all.... but averaging out, with an out and back or up and down hills, it seems to do fine, as long as its not combined with any of the other multitude of factors that hammers down the gas mileage in the Imp. My wife is currently getting 20-24mpg with "mixed" driving. Temps are relatively mild here in the Seattle area, but much of her driving is under 3 miles per trip, and she won't admit that she exercises the "sporty fun" of this car with a bit of a lead foot.... quite a bit. Her freeway portion of driving is very tame, barely going over 60mph....not enough to make up for the cold start, short runs. We had hoped for better "city" mileage, but lets face it...its a fun car to drive, and when we do have to drive long trips, then it does get good mileage at least, so its a keeper. |

Only other car on the market that even has my eye is the Lexus CT Hybrid. The way I see it. Subaru has 5 years to drop a econ/hybrid that gets about 5 mpg better than this model. Don't think that's too much of a stretch lol.
I saw some reference to terrain and yes I will say Waldorf roads are piss.. On top of that we live outside of the beltway and have to go through easily about 8-10 lights to reach civilization wether its to work or for leisure.. |
