Default plasma tv owners, did you buy the 'extended warranty'? if so, glad you did?

tv cost 2400, warranty is an extra 400. it seems like everything that i have ever bought with a warranty, the problem never seems to be covered or the 'repair guy' finds a way to blame the broken problem on intentional misusage etc...

thoughts?

I am looking at a 50" Panasonic Plasma, probably going to pick it up after work today or tomorrow. Its $1500 for the TV and the 3 Year Plan is 279.99, 5 Year is 499.99. Is it worth the money????

How reliable are Plasma's?

I typically always refuse the BB/CC extended warranties, but $1500 is a ton of cash (in my mind) for a freakin TV and I would be a very sad individual if it crapped out on me after a year. That being said, at this price point i'm leaning towards skipping it, if it were a little cheaper i'd be more inclined to go for it.

That's why I got mine. Yes, i know it's a huge ripoff, but figured if, and a giant if at that, the tv somehow crapped out in the x years the warrenty is for, at least I only paid 100 for it.

Then 3 weeks later, the tv dropped 200 bucks in price, so I got the refunded to me.

<bad logic>It's like I was being paid 100 for the warrenty!</bad logic>

ex-gf bought a plasma a couple years ago and I insisted she get the extended warranty. Long story short, the TV died in the first year, they replaced it

Best $250 you can spend on a plasma!

bought one on my panny 50'' 1080p, I got EPP pricing so the warranty was only $150 for 4 years. really can't go wrong with that.

You have to watch out for burn-in on plasmas, expecially the first few hundred hours of use. Some of them have built in safeguards for this however I have seen some modern plasmas ruined by burn in. We actually have one in a conference room with bad burn in. Two things that are a big no-no...

1. Do not pause movies for an extended time. If you need to pause something to do something for more than 10-15 minutes then turn the TV off while its paused.

2. Don't watch things in letterbox mode. A buddy of mine ruined his brand new 65 inch by continually watching things in this mode. The black strips across the screen were inactive 90% of the time he was watching movies and now when he watches anything in full widescreen mode (XBox 360) you can see the bands on the side of the screen are a different brightness than the rest of the picture.

not plasma, but my parents bought a Samsung HLS-xxxx DLP 1080p HDTV, and have had nothing but problems. They are also NOT happy with the extended best buy warranty, as they are not getting the help they deserve.

that's the primary reason I avoid buying them, there is either fineprint to deny your claim or get the run around poor service trying to get your equipment fisked.

Isn't there some lemon law that companies have to warranty products for the first year anyway? Or did the Great Gazoo tell me that?

I definitely bought an 3-yr EW for my Panasonic plasma.

Burn in is no longer a concern for modern plasma's. Short term image faint retention can happen but it is easily resolved by displaying something different. I do a lot of gaming on mine and no ill effects. I will never have a problem either since i don't only play the games on it. Varied TV watching is the key and is what most everyone will do with it.

Putting a plasma in a commercial setting where you're going to show a windows desktop or something all the time is utterly stupid and you deserve to have it implode on your face for doing so.

Sometimes the fine print says that you have to use the manufactuers warranty until it runs out. So your really only buying the difference and not the full 2 years or whatever.

That is no longer the case at Costco for $$$ electronics due to all the abusers. You will want to recheck thier return policy before blindly committing to a purchase.

Correct, and the better ones will stipulate that they begin after the manufacturer's warranty this extending your coverage to manufacturer+extended.

Yeah I bought the extended warranty when I got my plasma TV. Its a must with a plasma IMO. I've had mine for over 6 months now without a problem. I made sure to break it in correctly and setup my settings perfectly, as to not cause damage/extend the life period of it.
