Default 2015 WRX Blower Fan Noise

2015 WRX. When my blower fan is on a low speed setting, it makes a consistent fluttering/whining noise. It has always done this. It isn't that loud, but it is loud enough that I can hear it over normal road noise. I would think that at the lowest setting, I shouldn't be able to hear the fan at all. Is this normal? I don't want to bother bringing it to the dealer unless I know its abnormal and will be fixed.

Maybe try posting this in the 2015 defects thread? Maybe someone will have an answer there. My personal experience with both the 15 and the 16 is that the blower is noisy at low settings so this might be "normal" for the platform but I'm not 100% sure.

Mine is quiet. Cant hear it driving while on low. A 'fluttering" noise sounds as if something might be hitting the fan. I'd probably pop it out and have a look since its right there under the glove box but that's me. Bob

Default WRX Fan Noise Solution

Wife's WRX also had this same fluttering/whining noise. It was very noticeable to the both of us, and we could hear it when the fans were on low, just like you could. I took it to the dealership who listened to the fan and told me it was normal. They even pulled out another '16 WRX and it also made the same noise.

After that, I did some research and decided to try out ordering this crosstrek blower motor cover, and...it's a perfect fit. Now the noise is inaudible! Well worth the $30 we spent on the part.

This is a good topic. I just ordered a shroud cover from Subispeed before I saw this post....

Bump.
Installed the cover yesterday. Took less than 5 mins. Direct fit.
I used 3 of those clips, as the one the cover comes with is a little flimsy.
Fit and finish is excellent. This cover should have been there from the factory.

I installed the cover earlier today, but I have the OEM interior illumination kit (footwell lights) so I had to remove the light before installing the cover and loop it through an existing hole in the cover, then I remounted the light with some 3m double sided tape cut to size. It's a noticeable improvement, there's no more rattling/whirling sound when running the fan, just the sound of air coming out of the vents like a normal car.

Sorry about the subpar quality installed pic, it was dark by the time I got back from the store with double sided tape:

Very true.

Wrx seams a little louder than the OB. IMO/ I wouldn't worry about it.

Just installed the cover last weekend as the whine was getting annoying. After installation a rattle was introduced from the motor cables hitting the cover. To address that, I used some camper seal foam tape from Lowes on the bottom right corner of the cover as pictured above, between the corner of the insulation and the corner of the cover itself. Works great!

Great thread. I was just wondering if there are ways to cut that noise down. It's not annoying but I would like to not hear it.

2015 WRX. Gonna check this out. My fan is louder on setting one than my muffler deletes and HK stereo set on 17.
