Hi, All.

I've done quite a bit of searching the forums, and this seems to be the closest thread to what I'm looking for.

I'm looking to value engineer my stock 2015 wrx for daily driving gravel, dirt, slickrock and a variety of snow conditions from soft powder to slush and ice. Temperature in the climates I drive in literally ranges from -40 to 116 f. These days, I'm more frequently in the higher end of the temperature spectrum.

I'm looking to increase the height and travel of the suspension via springs and shocks/struts in the most cost effective way possible. However, anything I install needs to be an upgrade and not a downgrade.

I'm planning on replacing the factory 17x8 wheels with 16x7's.

I'm not looking for a shopping list- I'd rather learn how to fish.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank You.

Vehicle - 2018 Subaru WRX Lmtd. (non-STi)

Wheels - test fit Method MR502 16x7 +30mm offset, max load rating 1850 lbs, 5x114.3 lug pattern

Weight- 19.2 lbs each! (verified with a scale)

Fitment- direct fit, no spacers needed and/or extended wheel studs needed, clears front OEM clunky calipers, plenty of space back side of wheel lip vs spindle/upper most strut bolt mounting point, no rubbing issues, and almost flush having +30mm offsets with the front fenders. (+45mm or +48mm offset is ideal but the wheel size choices are limited unless I went with 15's plus a front brake caliper swap which I'm not ready to do just yet...)

Tires- (pending) 205/60r/16 92v Michelin CrossClimate2, 640BA Treadwear rating, 3PMSF rated!, weight 22 lbs each! (per Tire Rack)

Goal- Grassroots rallying all the way but still completely driveable as a daily! With that said, I'm going for the least amount of unsprung weight therefore it would be counter-intuitive to put a chunky & heavy A/T tire with a tall aspect ratio of 70 (65 would be my maximum as they are even found on VT cars and many other rally vehicles 205/65/15 to be exact).

Since you're on a budget (as most of us are unless you're rich &/or sponsored) for the lift get shocks and springs (e.g.- Bilsteins and King springs), spacer kit (size depends on how high of a lift), sources: get-primitive, awdadventure, rallitek, lpaventure, etc. If you have more cash to spend go with flatoutsuspension but you'll pay over $2k for their adjustable coilover setup (but I highly recommend using their products, this is route I am taking). And with deeper pockets get Reiger's (German made custom coilovers for competition but very expensive & what VT cars use on their STi's)

Wheels- Method MR502s 16x7 +30mm offset (direct fit no mods needed) -or- Sparco Terras 16x7 +45mm offset 1" wheel spacer needed + longer wheel studs (e.g.- ARP studs) + open end lug nuts). Not sure of other wheels in a 16x7 unless you go upscale with Braids, Evo Corse because they custom cater to your needs.

Tires- you can go several ways with this. But again, given the fact you want to "value" build your WRX start w/ cheap snow tires- a lot of tire manufacturers make these, do a search and you'll get my drift. Authentic rally tires are not made to daily so you'll be wasting your money unless you're serious about competing in actual rally races & want to swap out your rally wheel/tire set up everytime you hit the dirt, snow, trails.
For my purpose, I am going with Michelin CrossClimate2 2 so I'll be able to drive on them daily and go off-road (not "offroading" as this term can be misconstrued by readers who don't know any better, per se) at times. 640 treadwear rating plus 3PMSF rated as well.

I get some inspiration from VT cars, peruse their website and get ideas. These are the guys responsible for building WRX/STi's for Bucky Lasek, Scott Speed, Ken Block, Travis Pastrana.

Hope that helps!

I'm leaning towards Sparco Terra, OZ rally wheels, or Method MR502
What's the offset for the Corse's?

Had to replace an axle and get an alignment so I used it as an excuse to lift and swap out the wheels that came with the car!

07 2.5i Wagon on Forester AGX struts, Impreza Kings lifting springs, Fifteen52 17" 5x100 ET38 wheels & Geolander 225/65/17 tires. Rubbing slightly but hoping it will eventually go away.

After the lift but still on the old 18" OZ Racing Supperlegerras that came with the car when I purchased it.

After the lift + wheel & tire swap

Finally, got the Method 502's 16x7 +30mm (19.2 lbs each!) w/ Michelin CrossClimate2 92v rated 205/60/16 (22 lbs each!) installed for my daily's (heavy 18" OEM Enkei's are spares). At first I had to test fit this size to be sure everything cleared. As soon as it looked good I mounted the tires on.

Gave them a test run in some back roads..

Also recently installed Project Mu Sports Inner Brake shoes. These lock up the rears nicely and eliminates the need to install a hydraulic handbrake (a grip more of parts, lines, etc. & of course a more optimal way to go about it but way more work, more time).
The VA chassis WRX utilizes the exact same rear brake shoe/disc brake setup as the BRZ, vice versa. Hence the part # is for a BRZ (vendor did not stock them for the VA).

Your photo links didn't work for me, but it all sounds like a good setup!

I realized I completely missed your response back in November! ::yikes... I need to check NASIOC more often::

I'm on a warpath updating all of my older build threads and such scattered across the internets and THIS is my first stop. Damn, I miss forums. Facebook is CRAP!

As to your question, my suspension was all stock for that season, and it served me well. I have since lowered the car with RCE Yellows and didn't have clearance issues on our course. Took it out for a spin a month or so ago and it was a blast! Gave me a chance to get the new wing dirty, too.

Thumbs up

Very nice! No worries man.. wow, by spending $5k plus on a cf-wing (esp from VSC) I'd think you would be going for more of a lifted coilover setup as opposed to just buying a new set of lowering springs with factory struts?

Since you're into Rally-X would definitely recommend getting a decent set of gravel coilovers. I am assuming this is already something you've looked into? If not, is there a reason you are choosing not to go that route? Curious...

Dirt track looks super fun; that's what I'm talkin' about! No elevation changes and or jumps?! We are in Subaru's (esp. the WRX/STi line) and this is what they're meant for!! Not low and show, but whatever to each their own.

I had knowledge of this wing being available long before they announced it, so I started saving up. The VSC wing isn't a Wallet Flex for me, I don't have a ton of extra funds to wrap up in my car. But I really wanted to make it happen given that it's a "Celebration Car" commemorating the rally career for David Higgins & Craig Drew. There honestly isn't much advantage with this in a local rallycross situation, as the speeds rarely reach a level that would make the wing useful. I have been slowly assembling parts to be able to reliably take this car to the track where higher speeds would come into play.

Honestly factory struts are more than capable of handling the conditions my local rallycross venue has provided over the years. Unfortunately that's all about to change as the race track is getting sold (not likely to continue as a track under new owners) and the alternative track for my area would be a car killer for my STI even with stock suspension. They'd need to grade the new site or decrease the severity of the elevation changes for me to even consider doing rallycross there, so I'm kind of waiting to see what happens.

I had thought about doing something like that, but as I mentioned before the future of our local rallycross program is sorta up in the air. I'd rather not focus it solely on Rallycross without knowing and there's a very active Autocross program here... so it may be shifting to that even though I do still prefer sliding around in the dirt.

In the meantime I did manage to get a few quick shots playing around on a dirt road while trying to test out an Auto-Follow feature on the gimble I just picked up. It didn't work as well as I had hoped but I couldn't not do something fun with the footage I managed to get.

A "Celebration Car"? What does this mean, exactly? Never heard of the term, is it new or just something you call your STi.. I get you're commemorating Higgins. Should change it to McRae instead!! That's just me
