Question Best Drop-In Filter for MY2000 RS?

Who is running what filter? To my knowledge there are three filters avaliable for MY 2000, the Pipercross for $60, the Amsoil and the K&N for around $30. Does anyone have a favorite? Is the Piper worth the extra money?
Thanks. sorry fo so many questions.

Question

I thought K&N filter for MY00 was not available yet? Have you found a K&N part no?

OK, I just did a search, something that I shouda done before. No K&N part no yet, but apparently this part no. will work...

"33-2075 TRUST ME, I'm using it! It's about 1/8" too wide, but the rubber gasket squishes quite nicely..."

I just wanted to relist this topic, seeing as though it hasn't gotten too much exposure and I thought someone might have an update as to which filter is truly best. I know that Amsoil just came out with one that is a direct replacement for $70 but I was wondering if there was any acutal dyno info on it.
Thanks

oh yeah, one more question,

By replacing the stock filter with an aftermarket one, does this do anything negative to the rich/lean mixture?

I should reset my ECU after this right?

Thanks again

$70 for the Amsoil filter sounds too high. I'm a dealer and just called and doublechecked on it. The part # is S1992, which is a special order filter at this point, and cost should be around $40. Since it's special order, you'd have to wait a few weeks (maybe 4).

I'm running the Amsoil filter in my '98 Legacy GT and like it real well. It's a different part number, and I don't have any dyno or g-tech comparisons for you. Sorry. It didn't seem to alter the mixture in any way, and I did not reset my ECU. I didn't get a rich condition until I removed my intake snorkus (in the fender), and that was with an ECU reset. My gas mileage went down and I can't say that the performance went up enough to justify leaving it out. So I put it back in, and reset the ECU again. Back to normal now- feels better.

You can get Amsoil stuff at dealer cost if you're interested in it. I've got some info on my web site at http://www.lubedealer.com/tulsa . It's a good deal if you like to take care of your cars. If you've got any questions, just ask.

uhh, that was $60 for the PiperCross filter, and ~$30-40 for the Amsoil or K&N, where's the $70 coming from?

[EDIT] DOH - reading too fast and missed something. You're right $70 is WAY too much for an Amsoil panel filter [EDIT]

I have an Amsoil filter in my MY2000 RS. I put it in after I made my intake (ACE hardware...ACE is the place!) Anyway, after I replaced the filter I noticed....no real difference. I am sure it did something but personally I just couldn't tell.

I got a MY00 drop in K&N and the part no. is 33-2154, it fit perfectly just like the oem one. I put a cold air induction pipe on my car, and it sounds different than the stock paper filter. and after the K&N is in there, I can actually feel the gas pedal is lighter. not sure if there is any performance gain, but you can definetely feel it rev smoother. one other thing that worth it is you can reuse it.

i have the amsoil as well for MY00...only slight difference from stock, not something to write home about. It's mostly a good mod when combined with other little ones, then a nice reset of ECU and the call feels a little better.
i ordered mine from www.amsoil.com they part number isn't there yet, but i called and just asked for S-1992...that is the number.

33-2154 is the correct K&N part number. i have had mine for about a month and am very happy. I picked the K&N because that is what I always ran on my Hondas.
Against popular opinion, I did not reset my ECU. I have put 2500mi. on my car since the install. In addition to the extra power down low and across the curve, I get better gas mileage. I drive 80-90mph on the hwy. I used to get 24mph. Now I get 25-26mpg.Commuter mileage used to be 20-21 and now it is 21-22mpg. I use only Chevron 89octane and catalog every tank.
A worthwhile cheap mod.

Hey Matt, I'll have mine in a couple of days on your recommendation. Do you ever plan to reset your ecu?

At this point, NO.

Down the road in a year or so, I plan on getting a TECII and maybe one of Trey's cams at which point my whole set-up will obviously change. I am getting a Stromung Twin-Tip in a few weeks and if that seems to change things, I might reset it at that point. But if my car is performing better and getting better mileage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I have yet to have anyone argue with my logic( which i would welcome since I might learn something). My thinking is, if it runs rich after and ECU reset and a high flow filter, then don't tell the ECU that you are going to give the engine more flow. I don't honestly know if this is true, but 2500mi of driving suggest it does work. Especially since I was in 90-120 degree heat in Death Valley and Southern Utah with the AC on constantly.

i always try to post this when i see a topic like this...
amsoil part #s
MY98-99 TS74
MY00 S1992
now here is what i think about those... the "TS" means its a 2 stage filter and the "S" means its a single stage. now amsoil brags about its 2 stage filters, but what about the single stage? does anyone have any more insight into this?
im using the TS74 in my 98 RS and i did not notice much of a difference.

I could be wrong on this, so I'll doublcheck it tomorrow, but I thought the S, as in S1992, just meant it was a special order filter. Not normally stocked. I ordered a filter for a friends Justy, and it was a special order (I think S1775), and it looked like the same construction as the TS-74 in my Subarus (SVX-sold, Outback, GT).

I think the K&N filters allow more airflow, but the Amsoil filters actually filter better, with an improvement of airflow over the OEM paper filter. It's all kind of a trade-off.

Rich

EDIT- Yep, the S indicates a single stage filter. It uses the small pore foam. Hope I didn't confuse anybody with my ignorance- EDIT

I think oiled foam air filters flow as well as K&N, while trapping more dirt.

The two stage filter at draken parts for $70 is a "secret" part number that nobody else can get, and it will trap a little more dirt than the single stage S1992.

I noticed my biggest power gain from my cold air intake, and another gain on top of that when I added my AMSOIL. Then I got a similar gain when I went with bigger size ntake tubing (version #3). I reset the ECU with every change I made.

Overall, I am pleased, and will not be switching to a K&N. I paid $40 for mine, and it was worth it.
