Question Cat-back or just muffler?

Within a month or 2 i'm considering purchasing a cat back system or possibly just have a borla or magnaflow muffler welded on at a shop. I've looked at the borla and stromung cat-backs seriously. And right now not sure which route to take, i've got borla headers and custom intake.
This is one of the muffler's I was checking out. It's at the bottom, model 14814. http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/..._tips_ss5x8.asp
The car is a 98 legacy gt...so my choices are limited.

Interested in some opinions, personal experiences, better ideas? This is my first post by the way, so take it easy on me. btw...I posted this in the legacy forum but hadn't got any responses...

It depends on what you want sound/performance wise. Do you want the best HP gains, it to be loud, quiet, or just for looks.....etc.

When I first did exhaust, I first bought a muffler, then a couple months later a mid-pipe. The mid-pipe gives you significantly more power, and better sound from whichever muffler you decide on. When I say significantly more power, I mean, well, as much as the muffler alone. Do not go larger than 2.25", and just have a good shop weld one up for you. My last exhaust set-up was a very popular name brand unit, $$. My new one is custom, and sounds better, looks/fits cleaner, and makes more power, for a little less dough.

Why not go larger than 2.25? I talked with Cobb and other places whom recommended 2.5 cat back and this was on a 2.2.

I have a 2.5 cat back custom bent (not mandrel) with a Dynomax Bullet muffler. I really like it and have received almost all great remarks on it.
negative is from wife and noise levels.

Well, unless you have head work and cams or something, you have probably lost some low end power because of the larger pipe. You probably noticed improved performance at the top end of the power band, but probably lost some at the bottom. It is just a trade off and most people don't want to lose the low end grunt, so they stick with 2.25". It is all a matter of the physics behind an exhaust: too much diameter paired with lower output and lower temps compared to that of a turboed car with high temps, high output and larger pipes. I hope this kind of makes sense. I believe there is a thread in the legacy forum by JoeT that links to an article he published on this very topic.

I used one of Coastal Fabrication's lightweight race mufflers. 2.25" is plenty big enough. My cars pulls harder throughout the powerband, seemed to gain everywhere, and the fact that it pulls all the way to redline without dropping off tells me that it doesn't need anything bigger.
