Really it's quite simple. Not sure what mental block people have on this topic, but it's a whole lotta stupid.

Nobody buys a 6 speed these days thinking that it's faster than an auto (apart from Subarus CVT). Autos have been faster for a while now. Especially when you consider that the dct gets launch control and the manual requires the driver to be the launch control - less than perfect.

I had no real issue with the shifter or clutch in the R. Felt weird at first, but I grew accustom to it and learned it's nuances. Same with the steering.
The guy you quoted is a weird duck. He wonít shut up about how awesome Subaru is and how much VW sucks. That would make sense on a Subaru forumÖ until you realize he owns a VW and has zero connection to Subaru.

The new golf r seems more than fine, if you can get past the haptic nonsense - which I canít.

Itís the first one that is a performance car, that is a hatchback. Prior it was a hatchback that had some performance. And there is a difference.

The car is a bit mind blowing. I just watched another video of a guy railing in it (twisties) around Asheville. The EA888 is a beast, and mated to this new torque vectoring drivetrain, a monstrous beast.

But the same as you, the haptic crap will probably prevent me from buying and push me to Toyota. Itís just not a good setup for a long term car and this is the Last Dance as it pertains to performance ICE with 6MT. Unless they make some corrections, this haptic and no physical controls setup does not lend itself to long term ownership.

I wonder if they'll go back to normal buttons at the mid cycle refresh.

Mk7.5 interior was perfect. Put the new drivetrain setup there and you'd have a perfect car.

I think either the haptic stuff will catch on or they will have to go back to something more normal. In either case, from everything I've seen/heard/read, the Mark 7.5 interior is superior to the new one. The Mark 8 just looks cheap, while the Mark 7.5 could have come out of an Audi.

To me the Mk7.5 looks outdated, plus, I believe we never got the digital cockpit. Too many buttons and the overall design reminds me of my 2005 WRX w/ Saab dash. The Mk8 looks like it's from 2021.

The Mark 7.5 Golf R had the digital cockpit.

Thanks. Either way, it looks outdated for 2021 (granted that was 2019).

Agreed, that looks and functions a LOT better than the MK8 disaster.

It's a Subaru. It won't function and it will be at the dealer every week.

I applaud them for moving into the current century but they fail at execution. The UI looks so old and tired.

Simple UI isn't necessarily a bad thing as more complex UI usually confuses the average person which drives down CR and JD Power scores. The big problem is the response of the screen is poor.

How many dealer software updates now for that MK8 . What a disaster, hopefully it will be fixed with the MK8.5 at least the functionality but it also looks so damn cheap. Obvious cost cutting measure as a result of the dieselgate.

Just look at the silver button images and the icons. They look like a 2002 design. Simple and clean is great, but these are ugly.

Just make the whole got damn dash a screen. I mean a screen from edge to edge like a 49" 4k screen across, just not the height, with some HVAC vents, and be done with it. For f sakes. Look at that BBC dildo screen in that car. It's awful.

VAG may have misstepped with the haptic BS in the new Golf R. But it's better than Subaru's dildo screen.

I'm looking at the screen and not seeing a dildo . . .

The R and the gti Autobahn both got digital dash.

Both of my good buddies had wrxes of that era. There is absolutely zero in common. The WRX interior was pure econo car garbage.

You need to look at the mk7.5. Mk7 wasn't quite as nice.

Having owned a VA WRX and MK7 GLI I prefer the WRX. VW interiors are grossly overrated and the material quality drastically dropped with the MK7.5 and that is all evident with MK8 disaster. Fisher Price plastics galore.

Nothing. Itís a personal preference. The visibility was greater, the layout is better and I had zero rattles.
