wait till you see the other shot. bc of the upward nature of the shot and location of the boom it almost seems like its being chased by a drone haha

Here's the first of a set of 4 pictures. This is my first shoot with the 50mm f1.8 lens and a CPL filter.
I feel like I really messed up when it comes to the focusing, so I'll definitely need to practice with it a bit more. The whole face of the car is out of focus. 20150829-IMG_0058 by Tyler McGowan, on Flickr |

I know people dog AF but I use that almost every shot. I have good luck with that. How are yiu getting your focus?

I use autofocus all the time, then after its gotten pretty close, Ill switch to manual and make little adjustments if need be.

I think a lot of cameras in live you you can flush the plus button and zoom in on a certain spot of the car. If I ever have to manual focus I always use Live View zoom in on like the front hood emblem until it's very big and the screen and fine tune it that way you usually get good results doing that.

I always use AF. I also lock focus when using a tripod. The trick to AF is to focus on things that contrast so it has something to focus on. Or keep a light with you so it's not focus hunting in the dark.

I have never used the AF function on my camera. I have always manually focused all my shots.
Why do you all use auto focus? Just curious to the advantages? |

It's quicker. If the lighting is good and the camera can get it in a fraction of a second why would I take 30 seconds and do it? I trust my AF system in my camera, I fail at focusing more than it does. The only times it needs help is very low light and non contrasting focus points. Even then I shine my light on the car and focus on that. If its dark I will review it after but daylight I don't even bother.

As long as you are getting the right point of focus is doesnt matter how you got there. I think a lot of people say they dont autofocus because that would make them seem like a newbie. All of my features are set to manual but when it comes to autofocus, some lenses do a better job than others. Like I said before, I use it all the time and then adjust in manual if its just slightly off. These cameras and lenses are made to do it right so most of the time I have no issues.
That being said, when you put filters on the lenses sometimes you get messed up AF issues where bigger adjustments need to be made. For the most part, I let the camera get the general focus point and then I narrow it down from there. |

Hmm. I guess I will try it and see how I like it. I've just done it for so long, it seems awkward for me to not manually focus. I'll admit that sometimes I have to take a bit to get it focused on what I want.
I guess I have never used anything other then the manual feature and manually auto focusing everything. |

Maybe I'll try AF with this lens next time, thanks guys.
As far as zooming with Live View, this 50mm doesn't zoom haha. |

Here's another.
It's an odd angle for me but I'm constantly trying different things to see what I like. 20150829-IMG_0060 by Tyler McGowan, on Flickr |

Live View doesn't zoom the lens. It's viewing the picture at a larger view. Like when you view a photo on your camera and you zoom in on it. Same exact thing. |
