6spd sti clutch/flywheel in 5spd wrx tranny?
this is my second clutch/flywheel in my wrx, being the replacement for the original which was covered under warranty because of the cold clutch judder issue. well, it's doing it again
i give up. i was holding out hoping all my problems would be solved once i found a 6spd sti swap i could afford, but it's too late now. i've read in some threads of people being able to use the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate from a 6spd in a 5spd wrx, and my cold clutch judder problems will never come back again (i hope)... but there was something about having to grind away portions of the inner bell housing on the tranny i'm not clear on. can someone walk me thru this?

Check RalliSpecs website, they sell the Exedy Sport Clutch which is almost identical to the STi clutch and a hell-uva lot cheaper...oh, and it bolts right on.

Ben. Give Mike a call at the shop (Kingpin). He installed a 6mt Fly and clutch in his 5mt a while back. I think he said 45 minutes with a die grinder to make it work...

It only hits in a few places. I saw the grinding work before it was done. Its not that bad and you get a much better clutch.. The fly is heavy though.. Probably a good setup for drag racing. Mike loved the 6mt clutch.

does the flywheel have a larger overall diameter? would that mean having to use an sti starter?

No.. Its thicker and the "weights" hit the bell housing.. Start and every other piece work. Its a direct swap as long as you grind out the housing. Call Mike for info on where and how much grinding.

just fit a proper 5 speed clutch (non OEM) and you'll be fine ...the 6 speed is the same basic unit, only 5mm larger in diameter. 6 Speed clutch works as Clark pointed out, though you have very few options in the aftermarket.

can u recommend a driveable 5spd clutch and flywheel setup? i've gone thru so many aftermarket clutches in the past and have had mixed results, from bear traps that made my left leg bigger than the right, to poor reliability.
the other reason i'm kicking this around is because i can find cheap low mileage used 6spd sti clutch/flywheels for $200.... still need a bearing though. and then the cost to install... grinding... i just want this cold chatter to end! |

Hey Ben,
As Clark mentioned I dropped a 6spd clutch in my 5spd last year. I had already tried several aftermarket clutches and didn't find anything that I liked. The 6spd is inexspensive and is a great replacement. We usually carry them for $300 with flywheel. Let me know if oyu are interested. Thanks. Mike |

We hvae two different clutches for STi 6 speed, Alcon and AP if you are interested. Exedy are are the exact same as the STi clutches.

You might be able to machine this but I have not tried. I left mine stock and had no problems with it. Aftermarket flywheels are available for this setup if you prefer. Thanks.

What about stock wrx clutch and heavier flywheel (I dunno what flywheel though.) Will this cure the judder?
Kingpin for the 6spd mod, what area needs to be machine in this picture? http://www.oakos.com/wrx/gallery/gearbox/IMG_5403.JPG all pics located http://www.oakos.com/wrx/gallery/gearbox/index.htm Last edited by myton78; 03-06-2004 at 06:19 PM. |

Well not the best picture for this. You basically need to shave down the ribs on the inside of the bell housing and a bit of the area up by the starter whole.
This pic is better. Last edited by Kingpin; 03-06-2004 at 06:50 PM. |

Now I know there is reasoning behind this, but if the Exedy plate is the same as the STI, why grind the hell out of your bell housing?
Wouldnt it just make more sense to use the properly sized clutch/flywheel? Or it there some difference in feeling that can be noticed? |

The reason that I had gone to this combo when I had my 5spd were as follows:
1. The STi unit is much beefier than the USDM version and I was putting down enough power to make this a concern. 2. I had been thru the aftermarket excedy full face unit as well as several other clutches. The heavier duty of which held the power but were a nightmare to drive on a daily basis. On the other end the full face units I was tearing thru. This was a good compromise of both. 3. Cost. Very inexspensive and at the time that was a concern. 4. Availability. There was one in the shop. I really liked the feel and holding power of the STi unit. I of course eventually went to the 6 spd and still use the stock STi unit with that. This isn't for everybody, but it worked well for my situation. Thanks. |

what kingpin said... having had heavier-duty aftermarket clutches on previously owned cars,i don't want to be walking around with my left leg being bigger than my right
