Default Distributor for 1984 gl 4wd

Hey guys,
I am new to subaru's & a first time owner of a none running 1984 gl 4sd 4wd. I bought it from someone that had purchased it without a distributor. He installed a remfg ND distributor but could never get it sparking and gave up. I have done some legwork and it appears that it should have a Hitachi distributor and coil with a resistor. The resistor is there but one on the wires has been clipped off. Can I get the ND distributor to work or is the wiring not compatible? why did Subaru use ND for fwd/2wd & hitachi with resistor on 4wd/4sd?
The Subi is a 4 door hatchback 1800?ohv, I hope to use as a high mpg beater car. I am going to put a sticker on the back that says OLD SCHOOL OUTBACK.

they are interchangable. I have an 83 (2wd stick) that i killed the disty on and put one from an 83 automatic (which is the same as the 4wd one) and my car runs great.

All i could say is just make sure there are 2 wires comming out of the disty and make sure they are going to the coil. Also if you are trying to reuse the old coil i would maybe not do that. When I killed my disty the coil died too. You can buy a universal coil at places like autozone for like $13 or something cheap like that.

If I knew where you are located I'd help ya if you were close....

Oh and if you didn't know about the good folks... www.ultimatesubaru.net there are some great people there so head on over...
