Default What to do, What to do??

OK guys im sure your sick, and tired of this QS... but what should i do.. I own a 99 rs., and of course it's now time to turbo it. ive saved my pennies, said screw you warranty, and im ready. BUT I keep on hearing different things like nooooo dont turbo youll blow maf's like crazy, or your engine. or just get the swap from a j-spec wrx. or the one that seemed pretty interesting was get the top end, or whole engine of the older turbo legacy, and all the turbo stuff of course to get my self a nice base to build up from.

Turbo'ing my 2.5 L seems like it sounds like its never ending of buying **** to get it right.

wrx swap (done right but never cheap) im not ready to drop 10kor so on my car.. (dont have it) ha!

legacy turbo swap.. now that sounds interesting.. ive seen them (the engine) for not that bad in price. i understand there air to water inter cooled i DONT like...(i want a front mount) so thats not bothering me to much.....

1. does anyone know of anyone who did the legacy swap, was it worth it?

2. if i did do the legacy swap what all would i need?

3.or if you think i should do one of the other ideas what all would i need.

Hey I really appreciate anyone who can give this info to me, and for you taking your time to explain it..

Indeed, you will blow MAFs like crazy. Sometimes they'll last 15k miles, sometimes they'll last 30 miles (trust me, I know)

I like the turbo 2.5 route. But since you do have a MY99 there are more pros for going to aftermarket engine management. This will get rid of the MAF and is much more likely to prolong your engine life (with good tuning). So when you're considering the cost of turbocharging your RS, just make sure to include either a TEC-II ($2500 for the good Vishnu kit) or a Haltech E6K ($1300).

beobe99- The Legacy route can be done in an inexpensive way, if you are willing to have used parts making up most of your turbo kit. As far as using the Legacy Air-Water intercooler, you don't have to if you don't want to. There are some people using them (blaster88), but his kit is from an Aussie Liberty, which is basically the same as the Legacy setup I *think.

If you are interested in completing a U.S. spec Legacy conversion to your car, then it can be done. I am in the midst of putting a 1991 Legacy Turbo setup on my 2.5 RS.

Parts List:

Legacy Turbo water pump
Rebuilt Legacy RHB5 Turbo @ 5 psi
WRX OEM downpipe and exhaust
RalliSpec Top Mount Intercooler
J&S Knock Sensor
Walbro 255 LPH Fuel Pump
Legacy Turbo headers and up-pipe
OEM Porsche BOV
Vortech RRFPR
Legacy Turbo crossmember

I know that went the expensive route with my setup due to the extra costs of the J&S Knock Sensor and the RalliSpec intercooler, but it can be done for much cheaper. I bought my setup from stimpy, and he has an AWESOME website that outlines the entire Legacy Turbo swap to an EJ25. If you care to understand more about the costs of doing this turbo setup, he also has a parts sheet outlining the parts you need to complete this project, the price, and where you can buy them. All parts used are OEM Subaru parts. If you are intersted, check it out at www.nothingserious.net and read up on the whole thing.

Wow thanks guys. (even though im still mildly confused about it all) it has helped all the info yous givin... to start i have about 2k. i relized ill need more, and will get it. but thanks again and any more info would defintly help.

i think there should be a permanent post that goes through it all one for the legacy swap, one for the wrx swap, and of course one for the 2.5 turbo kits....

i will say i agree with the one guy that said go with the 2.5 l turbo . theres nothing like bottom end with lots of top. displacment is always good to have on top of turbo. but money is limited..
