Have a Nice Day? My RS needs a bra. Suggestions??

Yikes! I'm picking up lots of little rock dings on my front end. I'm considering the purchase of a Subaru brand bra but figured I should check with you guys before getting one. Anybody know if other companies make high quality bras for the RS? Thanks.

The clear bra is made by 3M and your local tint shop will do it for you. I should get my car done because the winter is coming up.

Clear bra? What year is it? How long have I been in a coma? Anybody know where I can see a pic of one? I'm really old, and I kind of like the looks of the black ones. What happens to the paint? The tank bra on my ZX-9R roughed up the clear coat on my tank a little. Is the same problem happening to the RS with the standard type bra?

dude, that clear bra is basically a clear plastic that kinda looks like a clear sticker that fits over the front end. so, you can't really see it, but it keeps your paint nice, because water can't get under it

The clear bras are made by 3M. Its a spray applied polymer that is clear. You can tell its on their if you are really close to the car (it has a kind of rough texture, almost like leather). I've been meaning to get my car done, just don't seem to ever have the time or the money. I'll do it to my turbo right away, though

Dont put a regular bra on your RS!!! please dont!! I bought the bra from subaru for the RS, you know were it is now? In my trunk back in the box. I put it on my car, it looked good, but it only took about 2weeks for all kinds of good crap to get stuck under it and scratch my hood and fenders, dam I was pissed wasted all that money. My suggestion, by some touch up paint and deal with the chips. I got one huge one about 3/4's the way up my hood right below the vent and the bra woulndnt have stopped it. But non the less that chip is why I bought the bra and look what happened, im worse off now. Anyway, thats just a suggestion

P.S. Anyone want to buy a Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS Bra? hehe

The 3M clear bra can also be applied to the side mirrors too - very nice as these are prone to rock chips too. The bumper is not as susceptible as it is a more flexible material and will resist the chips better. As the others have said . . . don't use the black vinyl bras. Even the good ones with the felt backing will damage the clearcoat on the car. Dirt and stones will get between the felt and the clearcoat (yes, even if you take it off and wash it a lot)and it just acts like an adbrasive and takes off the finish. I know as I had them on my 85 Subaru GL and my 88 Mustang GT - big mistake. My recommendations:

1. 3M Clear Bra
2. Subaru or aftermarker plexiglass hood protector (the drill-less type).
3. No Bra
4. Dolly's Bra (LOL!)
5. Vinyl Bra (don't do it!)

so this 3M bra thing, it's like a sticker they put on your car? so this means that you don't need to wax it hu. That's pretty cool. But what do you do when you want to take it off, won't it seriously mess up your paint?

I have the half/hood bra, whatever you'd like to call it. So far no problems. I'll get some stuff stuck underneath it, but nothing serious enough to scratch/chip the paint. And I'm sure it's protecting the paint from stone chips more than it's hurting the hood. Check here for a pic.

I too use the half bra, but only when taking long trips. I take it off whenever it rains. I have had no problems with it scratching the hood, even when my car was black.

Thumbs down

I agree with McDade. I bought my RS used and it came with a bra. It's in my garage now collecting dust. I put it on for a few weeks and when I took it off dust and sand poured out of the thing. It looked like somebody rubbed the car with some 550 grit sand paper. The front of my car is chipped scratched and generally thrashed from Tahoe winters. I'll get some touch-up paint and hit up the really big chips but otherwise, I'll enjoy driving my sube, not looking at it.

I've used a full front cover on my 98 Legacy for 3 years now and the thing still looks brand new. During the winters here in NH I make a point of taking it off and cleaning it and the car once a week. The sand doesn't have time to build up.

Bra's will only damage the paint if they are neglected. I used a factory bra on my last vehicle (custom painted mini truck, featured in Sport Truck magazine) and never had any problems with the bra hurting the paint. If you put it on and forget about it, then you are asking for problems. The directions say to remove it if it gets wet (i.e. rainstorm) and let it dry out, they also say to take it off and clean it out regularly.

Here's a link to X-Pel. They have that sticker like clear bra that is applied like a sticker for cheap.
And my understanding is, that if you do remove it, it does as little harm to your paint job as a normal decal would do.
