Default 2002-2003 MY Impreza recall WVD-14

Just a heads up folks. I will post more info on this when I get it.

However this is some of what I got

Make / Models : Model/Build Years:
SUBARU / IMPREZA 2002-2003

Manufacturer : SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
Mfr's Report Date : MAR 19, 2008
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 08V135000 N/A
NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:TAILGATE:LATCH
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 36791

Summary:
SUBARU IS RECALLING 36,791 MY 2002-2003 IMPREZA WAGONS. THE STUD BOLT(S) OF REAR GATE STAY MAY HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED WITH INSUFFICIENT TIGHTENING TORQUE AND A GAP MAY HAVE RESULTED BETWEEN THE REAR GATE PANEL AND STUD BOLT BASE. AFTER REPEATED REAR GATE OPERATIONS (OPENING AND CLOSING), THE REAR GATE INNER PANEL AT THE WELDING NUT MAY BREAK, WHICH WILL LEAD TO DETACHMENT OF THE REAR GATE STAY, AND THE REAR GATE DROPPING DOWN.

Consequence:
IN CASE SOMEONE IS UNDERNEATH OR NEAR THE REAR GATE, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT A DROPPING REAR GATE PANEL MAY HIT THEM INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY GAP AT THE STUD BOLT OF THE REAR GATE STAY INSTALLATION. IF A GAP IS FOUND, THE STUD BOLT WILL BE REMOVED TO CHECK FOR DAMAGE TO THE WELDING NUT. IF THE WELD NUT IS CRACKED, THE REAR GATE STAY WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE JUNE 2, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SUBARU AT 1-800-782-2783.

Notes:
SUBARU RECALL NO. WVD-14. CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION¿S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

This happened to my '02 OBS a couple of years ago. I tried tightening the stud bolt, but it came loose again after a few months. Then I used medium-strength loctite and tightened it and it's been fine for a year so far.
Never thought it might be a manufacturing defect...

Got my letter sometime last week. It's great, because about 6 months ago, this randomly happened while unloading groceries, and I have yet to get it fixed. Luckily I was taking a load inside when the gate fell down. I've got an appointment this afternoon.

The dealership is being good to me. I brought it in, they looked it over and immediately acknowledged that a repair is needed, ordered the "kit", and all with no charge because of the recall. I will let you all know how it all works out for me on Thursday. I have the first appointment of the day.

One of my hatch dampers was loose, but I had no cracks luckily...I just tightened it up and I'm good to go!

Why not just go look, no sense in driving to the dealer unless you have cracks.

Buried in the 12 page recall it states that if the welded nut has rusted loos to use a hole saw and make a 22mm hole, then take this special insert that is kind of egg shaped, shove it in the hole and put one pop rivet in it to hold it in, this provides the thread to reattach.

Thanks for the info! Based on that, I think maybe I'll keep my bent & locktited original as-is. It will be helpful to see "after" photos from the folks who are getting it done soon.

Theres the fix!
As stated above, if you have stress cracks (or it's broken away in my case), as found during the WVD-14 campaign inspection, the technician will:
-Drill (The SOA direction actually prohibit using a holesaw...apparently) a 22mm hole
-Install an insert that is riveted to the gate
-Replace BOTH of your tailgate stays

My other stay matches this one, same look and everything. I'm considering buying some touch-up paint at some point to paint the washer PSM. The trunk works like new, now. Big props to Hodges Subaru in Ferndale, MI.

A few things to note, as was told to me by the service writer/service manager whilst I was waiting in the wings watching my vehicle being worked on. Apparently, with most campaigns, SOA makes the replacement parts very easily available, sending multiple fix-it parts right at the beginning. With this campaign, SOA did not think it was going to be a big problem, and I did in fact end up waiting for the shipment to arrive this afternoon (I had an appointment at 8am, and was told the parts would be delivered on Wednesday ). I was the 5th person to come in for the recall, and was also the first one at that particular dealer to have the fix done. My advice, if you are aware you have this condition, is to let your service writer know that you WILL NEED the fix, not just the inspection. It will save you time so they can order your parts and then set you up with an appointment another day.

Also, there was a bit of a bustle, as mentioned above, because the directions specifically stated NOT to use a hole saw. Luckily, one of the techs had a 22mm drill bit, and we were up and running. I thought that was a bit odd.

If you have any other questions, I might be able to answer them (I watched pretty much the whole install).

Thanks for the photos and detailed info! My loose stud was also on the left side.
