Will I encounter problems if I take off the AC belt from the underpulley?
It's too cold to use the AC anyway. I thought maybe if I take off the AC belt, I'd be able to send more power to where it needs it most - the engine. After all, that's what the Unorthodox pulley does, send less crank RPMs to the alternator and AC and more towards the drive train(or is it engine?).
I'm no mechanic so please go easy on the "you're soooo stupid!" comments. However, "you're crazy" is acceptable.

If the AC compressor is the only thing on that belt - go ahead. But make sure you're not d/cing the power stering pump, too. I gotta take a look to make sure.

I'd be interested in finding out if any gains would be safely had from this, i never use the A/C anyway. Please PM me if you find out any additional info.

I don't see why not, but I think we're supposed to run the AC every week or month for about 10 minutes even in cold weather so that the AC can be lubricated during off-season.

tmat3 has a good point (although I must confess I have never remembered to do that with any car I've driven ). The other thing I would add is that when the A/C is not on, the pulley is probably just free-wheeling. I know that's the way my '89 Mustang is set up - the compressor has a clutch that disengages when the A/C is off. If Ford could figure out how to do that in '89, I would imagine Subaru does this now.
So, the A/C is probably just an idler pulley essentially. Does anyone know if this is correct? Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan |

I live in Colorado--I've never used AC on any of my cars. Even if it's hot I odn't--Slows my car down. I've got the N1 UD Pulley and I NEVER thought about this. I'm curious now!!! I will pull it off tonite(weather providing).

Remember that the A/C engages when you turn on the defroster, to help dry out the air and defog the windows. If you disconnect the compressor drive belt your defogger may not work as well.

Danno: That is only true of the Legacy models, our RS's do not do this.

I didn't know the Legacy's did. I thought it was a Subaru trait for the a/c-comp not to come on during defrost.

Our a/c only freewheels when not on so I wouldn't imagine a big gain in power if the belt was removed...

I think the Outback and Forester also exhibit the auto-AC trick while using defrost. Imprezas don't, at least the RS doesn't.

The A/C just free wheels when off. You would find more gains by the jet propulsion of a good fart then you would by removing that belt.

One other thing I've made an educated guess about, that may also be Legacy-specific: I've noticed that when I'm cruising down the highway with the A/C on, and then put the accelerator all the way to the floor to pass, the A/C suddenly blows warm air, then cools back down when I let off the gas. Unless something weird is wrong with my car, Subaru has a tricky way of freewheeling the A/C compressor when maximum power is needed. Has anybody else noticed this?

Disabling the AC compressor at WOT is a feature shared among all modern Subarus and it is even documented in the owner's manual, at least mine.

Well, I might not be able to read, but at least I'm not hallucinating! Thanks, Colin!
