Default 2017 Impreza Infotainment Issues

So I've been hearing some folks are having issues with the new 8" infotainment system in the Impreza.

Mine has been glitchy, and has had audio issues. Specifically, I get feedback when the back-up camera comes on, and the other day in a rainstorm all of my speakers sounded blown.

I've heard that some units are just dying, screen goes black and won't come on again.

If you're having an issue, post it up in here, and we can update each other on any fix Subaru comes up with. My dealer hasn't received any guidance on fixes yet, they are troubleshooting and documenting everything for now.

Yup... My 2017 Impreza Sport has had issues. Dealership has not been able to help thus far. They said they will contact Subaru to see how to deal with it.

I've done my best to document the issue so it's easier to diagnose the problem. I believe it's something with the fuse and temperature, because when the HU is on, it works perfectly fine. But too often, the HU simply doesn't boot up when I start the car.

Hope they figure this out, because I love the car otherwise.

Below is what I've documented since getting the car.

**Everytime the HU did not turn on, it was colder than 32°F outside.**

**Everytime the HU did turn on, it was either warmer than 35°F or the car had been turned on and driven previously within the prior 3 hours.**

1/7 Saturday 10:30 AM, drove car back home from dealer, HU was fine.

1/7 Saturday 12:45 PM, drove car 6 miles, HU was fine

1/7 Saturday 3:00 PM, drove car 6 miles home, HU was fine

1/7 Saturday 4:45 PM, started car to change parking spot, HU was fine

1/7 Saturday 5:00 PM, drove car 12 miles, HU was fine

1/8 *Sunday 3:00 AM, drove car 12 miles home, HU off with surrounding lights blinking continuously the entire ride*

1/8 *Sunday 1:00 PM, drove car 6 miles, HU off with surrounding lights blinking the entire ride*

1/8 *Sunday 5:00 PM, drove car 6 miles home, HU off with surrounding lights blinking the entire ride*

1/8 Sunday 6:15 PM, drove car 3 miles, HU was fine

1/8 Sunday 6:50 PM, drove car 3 miles home, HU was fine

1/8 Sunday 7:15 PM, drove car 4 miles, HU was fine

1/8 Sunday 9:30 PM, drove car 4 miles home, HU was fine

1/9 *Monday 5:25 PM, started car to change parking, HU did not turn on, but surrounding lights stayed on (no blinking)*

1/9 *Monday 8:30 PM, drove car 18 miles, HU did not turn on with the car, but surrounding lights stayed on, blinking every 5 minutes or so...then after about 55 minutes of the car being on, the HU turned on and was working perfectly fine driving 18 miles home.*

1/10 Tuesday, 8:00 AM, drove car 20 miles round trip, HU worked fine.

1/13 *Friday 7:00 PM, drove 8 miles round trip and the HU did not turn on. I saw it blink once around 7:10 PM. *

1/14 *Saturday 12:30 PM, drove 8 miles, HU did not turn on with the car *

1/14 Saturday 1:45 PM, drove 8 miles, HU worked fine.

Pull it out of the dash and leave in a bucket of rice for a few days.

Kidding aside, I hope you find a fix. This is a stupid problem to have in the year 2017.

I have 2017 subaru impreza sport and when it was 9 degrees out my radio screen and most of my radio controls on my steering was out. No function was working because of cold? it was 7.45 am nothing was working but radio was on. not a single button was working, touch screen wasn't working. I couldn't change and radio station or change the music. The music was on but nothing works. In that noon everything went normal. No problem ever since then. it happened on Jan. 5th 2017. Now Jan. 14th. I asked my co-worker if his car did too and he said few times when it got really cold in the morning. His car is 2016 Acura ILX.

It is pretty stupid... I mean did they not test the HU for colder climates? I guess THAT would be stupid, because everyone who has a Subaru lives in California, right?

Ah, the joys of buying a first year model. I, too, know your pain (2012)

It's not really a first year model. It's not even close to all-new. Buying a 2013 BRZ would be first year for a model.

When introducing the new 2017 Subaru Impreza, Todd Hill, line manager for the new car, pointed out that the interior door handles are new. This is not the kind of detail normally highlighted at new car introductions, but there was a larger point: The new Subaru Impreza features 95 percent new parts, so much so that even the interior door handles have been redesigned for the first time in 15 years.

Nope sorry. Guarantee suspension is the same, engine is the same except for the injection method. That's like 70% of the car right there. If a new interior and body make the car 100% all-new, then you're one of those types that's swayed by a salesperson calling a Camry "sporty" because it's a featherweight.

Good to see that they've made the stereo worse. I have a 2015 with the 6.2" starlink, it randomly stops connecting to my phone and the only way to fix it is to turn the car off and then back on.

Taking pride in not having the worst system made, good man.

I've had my 2017 Sport of about a week and a half now and have also had several problems with the infotainment system. It froze up once while driving and didn't respond to any input at all from the touch screen, physical buttons, or the steering wheel controls. Luckily this has only happened once. Occasionally though – and this is more frustrating because it's happened multiple times – apple carplay simply won't be activated. This is a super bummer because it was the feature that put this car over the top for me – none of the other cars I was looking at offered it.

I haven't had any cases of the infotainment system freezing, but driving in extreme cold (below 10F) I've seen the touchscreen be less responsive than usual at startup. I did have one instance of android auto failing to connect - might be that the system can lock out the phone if you connect the USB cable at the wrong time while the system is booting up, although I can't say for certain, I haven't been able to replicate that issue. Like OP, I also get a brief amount of audio feedback when the back-up camera comes on. Bluetooth connections have been super solid for me, Android Auto is great. I have the HK stereo and think it sounds excellent - although I have needed to jack up call volume to levels much higher than what I use for music/navigation (luckily, the car stores separate volume levels for calls, music, and navigation, so this isn't really a persistent problem).

Overall, I'm happy with the infotainment system, >99.5% of my time in the car it functions as expected. The one thing I still need to figure out a solution to is stereo behavior when you shut off the engine - i.e., let's say that I'm driving and listening to music on my phone via Android Auto, then park the car upon reaching my destination, when I shut off the engine, the stereo will stay on until I open the car door, but instead of continuing to play music from my phone it switches to whatever AM/FM/XM radio station I was last listening to. That behavior is annoying. There is probably a way to stop it from doing that but I haven't bothered to figure it out yet.

Are these same issues happening with the 6.5" infotainment screen?

I'm going to disagree with this. It is an all new platform. Bugs and all.

Yeah you and your wealth of knowledge about Subaru has worked for the last 63 years with your F250.

So I've just gotten the Impreza 2017 premium with the 6.5 inch screen. The morning after I picked it up, the screen was unresponsive. It had been very cold out and was fine by noon.

Since then the screen has frozen (usb port in console doesn't connect or charge either) a few times including last night while I was in the middle of setting the FM buttons. In that case, it had been running ok and then failed in mid activity. It always reverts back to the radio and remains frozen for the duration of the drive and then works later. I actually videoed me trying to get it to work so the dealership could see the issue since it would likely be working when I brought it in.

Default 2017 Impreza Limited 8" Infotainment

I haven't correlated my infotainment issues with cold weather- It's always cold here in Minneapolis but my car is parked in a 60 degree garage every night.

When the infotainment system works, it's fantastic, but it seems like I discover a new glitch every other day.

-I've had the "blown amp/speaker" issue one morning. Started the car, stereo worked fine, stopped at a store for five minutes. Once I got back in, I couldn't play either iPhone audio source (tried USB and Bluetooth) without constant static
-Infotainment got frozen on a CarPlay screen as I was pulling into my garage, couldn't do anything, wouldn't respond to any buttons. It fixed itself overnight.
-Started the car and might have pressed the Map button "too quickly". Couldn't get the built in GPS to proceed past the "Navigation is Loading" screen. Everything else worked fine
-Navigation started endlessly rerouting me one afternoon, had to switch to Apple Maps
-Navigation seems to be very confused about what time it is... when you've entered a destination, the ETA is always off by a few hours. Weird since the car has the correct time and date set
-Last night the screen froze at the liability/lawyer talk screen. Couldn't turn down the radio, couldn't use navigation. It did switch into backup camera mode when I went into reverse but that's all it did. Reset itself while I was at dinner.

Dealer hasn't heard anything about these issues yet, I've emailed Subaru through their online form.

Would love a way to force the infotainment to reboot, as turning off the car and opening the driver's door doesn't do it.

Would also love a software update...

Peter

Would pulling the ground on your battery reboot it?

I thought he was trying to see if a hard reboot would resolve the issue entirely, rather than trying to reboot every time it happened.
