Default About to buy 99 Legacy with 2.2L motor - What to look out for?

Hi, I'm about to buy the car in the title, it's a manual and has 100k miles. I found out the timing belts need replacement at 105k, so will ask the owner if it was done, which I doubt.

I'm going to have a mechanic look it over but are there specific things that are known to fail with this model?

Also, how much (ballpark) would it cost to get the timing belt changed?

Thanks and I look forward to maybe joining you guys.

Matt

The 2.2's are pretty strong. Common things that go out include: dash lights, antenna motors, sunroof seals.

That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure there's been a topic about this. Do a search in this forum and you'll find what you're looking for.

Ballpark for a timing belt <$300. DIY, <$60. You take your pick.

and rear main seal for ej22's....its sohc, so i say do it yourself, do a search on changing it and you will find its really easy. do the cam seals when you do the timing belt. the seals are cheap, except form the dealer, so go to autozone or knetchs(did i spell that right?). you will find that most people here that dont have a lot of money work on their cars themselves. its ALOT cheaper that way. make sure to change ALL fluids, except coolant probably doesnt need to be done. tranny, front diff, rear diff, motor oil, and make sure you fill up your blinker fluid resevoir.

okay that wasnt that funny....

Ask for service history on the vehicle. I think at one point Subaru recomended Timing belt changes at 60,000 miles ? Maybe this car only has 40,000 since the last timing belt. Generally speaking the 2.2 liter motor is very reliable, as long as it has received regular service. Check for obvious oil leaks, and make sure all the fluids (oil, antifreeze) are clean looking.

Also Subaru clutches arent perhaps the strongest. Has the car been driven mostly highway or city miles ? It may (or may not) be needing a new clutch soon, depending on how it was treated.

thanks for the replies.

the dealer inspected the car and found an oil leak from the rear of the engine, and estimates $650 to fix it (it says possible separator cover).

is this something that can be fixed well or should i walk away from this car?

Depending on where the leak is, and how bad it is, it might be most economical to just "let it be". On the other hand if you really like the car, and its in otherwise excellent condition, it certainly isnt a deal breaker to get it fixed. Although, perhaps, Six-fifty may be a tad on the high side. You might want to look at a local garage that is experianced with Subarus and get another quote.

ok thanks, that $650 quote is from the stealer. so will most likely get it taken care of by a local garage. also, the seller is willing to take that off the price of the car so i may just let it be and save money. thanks again!

here's the link for others and for future searches...

save that money, buy the timing belt and the rear main seal, cam seals and a tube of grey RTV sealant(should be the 650 degree rating stuff) then replace your timing belt(not hard at all, just search for info) and cam seals. then when the oil starts leaking onto the exhaust and making it look like you have a P.O.S car, pull the engine and replace the rear main seal and seal up the rear seperater plate with that grey silicone sealant.

price for timing belt, seals, and sealant= $100
price you saved from purchase of car using stealership quote= priceless
