Connection But No Data with Torque on 2002 Subaru WRX and MotoX
Last night I tried installing this app, but I am having some issues getting any data to read. I am using the following adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AAOOQJC/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item "Vgate ELM327 Bluetooth Scan Tool OBD2 OBDII Scanner for TORQUE APP ANDROID" I connected it to the phone (MotoX) with the "1234" code. It appears to be connected. When I start up Torque Lite it goes through the following sequence: Conencted to OBD interface, querying Checking protocols... Checking proto:Automatic search Identifying ECU(s) in system Checking protocols... Checking proto:Automatic search Protocol0 appears to work Connected to ECU OK. This whole sequence takes a few minutes. It gets to the "Connected to ECU OK" screen", but I do not get any data reading on the gauges. Usually it then starts the sequence back over and reconnects. Here is the info on the phone: The car is a 2002 Subaru WRX with the stock USDM ECU. The same thing occurs when I have the car off (with the key in the on position) or with the car on. If I turn the car completely off then it does not connect. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Update:
I tried downloading the DashCommand app and it has similar results. It will show that it is connected, but I don't get any data readings. The next step is to try the Bluetooth adapter in my Forester and see if that does any better. |

I upgraded to Torque Pro and it's the same thing. It still shows that I'm connected, but I'm not getting any data.
"Adapter PID read speed" always shows current at 0, max at 3, and average somewhere around 2. This makes me think it might have gotten some kind of communication, but then it stops? I tried reading fault codes and it takes a minute or two to get up to 100% and then it says no codes. I don't have any codes, so I can't really tell if this is even doing anything or not. I don't see much else I can do except try it on another car. I'll do that tonight. |

I have an 07 with a 4.4.4 motox running torque pro and it works fine. when I upgraded to 4.4.4 I had to forget the adapter and then resync it, though I do have a different adapter than you.

My brother may have figured it out. I am on a Carberry ECU ROM and it may not have the standard PID's. I noticed that these two parameters show up as "unknown" and I think the Carberry ROM is probably the reason why.
Vehicle OBD Standard Vehicle Manufacturer I'll try it on my Forester tonight. If that works, then I think it's very likely that the custom ROM is causing it to not read from the adapter like it normally would. |

Your 'adapter status info' screenshot from Torque might be part of the ticket here.
Notice how the app can't auto sense the OBD II and protocol used by the car? For the protocol its currently set to ISO9141-2-5-BAUD. It may be wrong. It would be good to confirm what standard and protocol the 2002 USDM WRX uses and also change the header under Vehicle Profile -> Edit -> Use Alternate OBD Header. You can choose the correct protocol here. For example for most 2010+ Subarus its: 'ISO 15765-4 CAN (11bit 500k baud)' For your WRX, try these three: ISO 14230-4 (5b init, 10.4k baud) ISO 14230-4 (fast init, 10.4k baud) or ISO 9141-2 (5b init, 10.4K baud) Save your profile, reload it and see if that helps. The added benefit of hardcoding it here, rather then relying on Auto is that it avoids throwing false CELs when the adapter and/or app disconnects, looses connection and then attempt to reconnect with the engine running. http://pinoutsguide.com/CarElectroni...c_pinout.shtml |

I just tried the 14230-4 ones and they don't work. Only 9141-2 will connect (or auto, which ends up on this one). Still no data though.

Resolved: Carberry ECU ROM doesn't have the same PID's as normal, so it connects, but won't read the realtime data.
The ELM Bluetooth adapter and Torque app work perfectly on my Forester. |

Good to hear it. Forester is using the same ODBII standard (ISO) and protocol (ISO 15765-4 CAN (11bit 500k baud) as the 2010+ Subarus. Makes sense.
Any solution for the 2002? It looks like you have an ELM327 v1.5 based adapter, it might be a revision too high for the 2002. I think you'd want 1.3a or earlier for compatibility reasons. Also have a look at your Torque app in Google Play Store. I think you mihgt find an update waiting to be installed. |

I'm in the market for a similar setup and was looking for suggestions on what to purchase (scan tool & application wise) since most of the reading I've done already states that these scan tools should work with pretty much any application, as the way it's reading the information from the ECU and the protocol's being used are pretty standard. The only difference I'm seeing is $$$ and how fast each scanner can process the information. I wanted to make a thread but don't have 3 reply's yet. So here's #1
Using the scan tool versus buying something like ScangaugeII or Edge Products CTS monitors seems the way to go unless someone can tell me otherwise? Just bought an 11' WRX hatchback, love it! Completely stock minus a few small upgrades (short throw shifter & exhaust). Looking for a great tool to monitor boost. I started looking at just mechanical/electric gauges that only show boost. However, the scan tool + app seems to be the way to go. Can anyone make suggestions and/or provide feedback on there experiences with which scanner's + apps they've used and the year WRX? Example... Year/make: Scan tool used: iOS/Android App used: Thoughts?: |

The 08+ cars are 32 bit so data rates will be much better. A cheap ELM Bluetooth adapter like the one from my first post and the Torque app will get you what you want. $7 for the adapter and $5 for the app.

EDIT: I think a better question to ask is, I've seen many different adapters, ranging from $7 - 100+ and was looking for everyone's feedback on which one you have, and your experience with it. Last edited by nachtfrau; 08-29-2014 at 12:02 PM. |

Ive been using the following adapter I bought on amazon. Its been working perfectly on my 2014 wrx with torque pro. Its cheap and small so you forget its even there.

Hey guys! Stock 02 WRX with just AEM intake.
Just received my Vgate Bluetooth OBD adapter in the mail today and downloaded the Torque lite app to check it out. So far everything seems to work great. I have an Autometer boost gauge on the dash and it is reading the same as the app. Coolant temp seemed to be working, a short drive around town to warm the car showed a 185F average. The tach feature seemed to work spot on as well. Ill be playing with it more to see how accurate and what features/sensors work with the car, but so far I like it, was well worth the purchase. I would recommend to anyone that wants more information about there engine without having to spend hundreds of dollars on costly gauges and gauge pods that clutter your cabin. One complaint about it (but could also be my phone: Motorola Droid Mini), i have to unpair and re-pair the adapter with my phone whenever I get in the car. I would think it should be able to just reconnect on its own, unless I am doing something wrong. I will probably purchase the full version of the app, especially since its only 5$ Hope this little input might help someone in their decision to purchase or not. |

I found that you can get it to work with JDM ECUs using the command feature:

I've been searching Japanese and Russian Subaru websites for the code but nothing so far. To think it will all work with one line of code. Ugh!!!
