I just have to say WOW!!!! Subaru of America and Subaru of Jax have come through for me in this time of crisis. I know some of you have had issues. I have to say I have not had any issues at all. I just got my car back yesterday, put about 150 miles on it so far, and it's running great. SoA called me today and offered me a gold warranty for my troubles. People, call SoA and tell them how you feel. For me it worked. I know for some it hasn't, and to those people I am very sorry to hear it. I will keep you all posted as the miles build up on this new engine. Good luck. Ash/Angelgirl, really sorry to hear the prob's your having. good luck to you.

Celly, don't know about that "illegal" warranty thing they told you about. I'd be calling back. Good luck man.

Default 2009 WRX Engine Failure

I also experienced the engine failure with my 2009 WRX sedan.
VIN#: 503440
Build Date: 08/08
Mileage at Failure: 9888

I had close to complete engine failure and had the car towed to the dealer. In less than 2 weeks I was driving it again with a new long block, all repairs done under warranty. The car has no modifications except for the SPT cat-back exhaust.

No complaints at all, had a great experience with the service. I’m just happy to be driving again.

Please add me to the list.

That's great news! If I hadn't bought a gold warranty (and a service plan, okay I'm an idiot) I'd surely be asking for one

Hmm, there must be something....

Yeah -- we got it all sorted out. The extended warranty laws in Florida are really odd -- so we just need to chat it out, as we were all good.

Took the car for a nice long drive today... And it seems 'right'... The engine started to wake up a little after 60-70 miles, and seems to be back to her old self.

I'm still getting a weird boost fluctuation @ 3500+ in 3rd and 4th at half throttle -- It seems more pronounced than before -- but that also just might be me looking for any issues... I wish they would just give us a real tune, and not this 91 octane emission friendly crap.

I will say this tho.. I started realizing how horrible the factory tires are... Seeing that I had the radio off for most of the drive I realized that those suckers are freaking loud.

before all this engine stuff happened...I took the car to Michigan and back.........fun drive, nothing crazy, but...I couldn't help but notice how loud the "ride" was from tires. Definately loud over every bumb and grove...the hwys in MI were terrible, really torn up. I was actually a bit nervous about how rough and loud it was, thought something was going to break! Don't get me wrong, it's a sports car and stiff. So i just chalked it up to that. I will definately look at some dif tires when the time comes.

Should have the first 1K on her by next week....so we'll see how it goes. Haven't noticed any fluctuations power yet...but I too am uber paranoiod still....just a matter of time I guess. I was hoping the tech would hook me up with a better tune to make it run a bit more smooth, but no such luck either. anyhow, just keep driving and enjoy...let them worry about any issues.

the oe tires are a little loud, even for hi po tires- but the choice between the new Dunlops and old RE92's is a no brainer

I have ~ 9000 miles on my new engine and couldn't be happier w/ the performance

You think this car is loud....Try putting 61,000 miles on a Civic Si and sitting in that thing hours on end each day. Felt like a go-kart. My 09 wrx feels like a caddy compared to that old thing.

I have about 200 miles left on the recommended break-in for the new engine and it seems to run just as the old engine did before failure. But I have noticed a loud ticking noise that makes the engine sound like an old beetle flat four. I am probably just being paranoid but I am extremely sensitive to any sounds that the engine makes now.

yesterday I bought an 09 wrx wagon which I am supposed to pick up tomorrow.
I realized the vin is an 804xxx with an 8/09 build date. Am I out of my mind for buying? I should still be able to back out of the deal.

I don't mean to single you out or to be rude, but "ya'll" need to stop worrying and **** <-- (shut the **** up)

look at the first post, all the failures are 07-09 of 2008
anything built after that is fine so enjoy your car

Definitely stop the deal; there is no reason that you should be paying 25k for a defective product. Trust me you don't want the hassles that I'm dealing with. I have suffered engine failure, I driven for 2 months with intermittent CELs and been in to the dealership 4 different times to have the CEL problem resolved, service technicians (though some of these items may have been previously unnoticed manufacturer defects) have damaged my intercooler and improperly re-assembled my vehicle (missing bolts, etc but literally 9 different components were/are screwed up), my vehicle for some time appeared to be using engine coolant, there are a number of issues with the ECU tune in general, and now it is making a wide array of extremely ****ed up noises. And after having discussed with SOA over the past month what options may be available to me to cordially remedy this situation, as of today they basically told me to **** off.

You'd be insane to purchase that particular vehicle, and frankly if I were you I would re-assess the decision to purchase any new Subaru. Though if you are still interested I'll sell you mine...

Oh look it's a pile of failed Subaru engines...

Ash, I know you posted this before but what dealer did the work on your car? I certainly do not want to end up there.

Brunswick Auto Mart Service Department; don't go there. After asking around others have told me the same thing (and not just for Subaru's).

I can't speak for other locations in your area but one of my friends vouches for Boardman Subaru (though not local to Cleveland).

I would gladly drive to a good dealer for service. I had my first service at Ganley of Bedford. The gave me a courtesy wash and a ton of courtesy swirl marks and small scratches.

LOL and I was about to complain about Brunswick never washing my vehicle (despite being there a half dozen times). Although they did provide complimentary interior greasing once.

Yeah I also got free white lithium grease on my drivers seat. It was a real bitch to remove.

Don't do it. If you haven't physically taken delivery of the car, you're still good to back out. Have you signed paperwork? Ask them to DX another car in. It's good that Subaru is giving us all new long blocks, but it's still something you shouldn't need to bother with on a brand new car.

The engine will fail in that car so if you are crazy enough to buy it make sure you don't stray far from home until you get your second engine installed. But really if you have read this thread why would you want to put yourself through all the grief that will surely come your way?

Crev,
I concur with the others. I have an 08/08 build and now have 600 miles on the new engine. Subaru has been great to me and my dealer in Florida has been awesome with the repair. But, if you don't have to go through this aspect of 09 WRX ownership....don't. If you proceed, ask for the extneded warranty up front. You'll need it. Good luck, but I'd try to swap it out for a newer build date, anything from late 08(Nov/Dec) or any 09 build date. Good luck.
