The thing that I am looking forward to is the XX/09 build date has XXX issue. Anyone have a bunch of miles on their '09 build?

Don't jinx us lol

I have an 09 with just ~ 6300 miles on it. No problems, still stock map--but probably not much longer

Hey -- There is nothing wrong with being creepy... As long as you're not actually creepy...

Since the turbo shares the same oil that the engine uses, and metal that gets into the oil goes through the turbo.
Had the service dept check for "excessive shaft play" (that sounds weird now that I think about it ) in the turbo, which there was so they replaced it.
Yeah -- there is a screen that is supposed to filter the oil before it gets to the turbo.. Sometimes it works... Sometimes it doesn't.. I think it is all proportionate to how quickly the bearing goes... Mine seemed to be instantaneous since I don't do many highway miles... But for some people, I think the problem is much more gradual which means more smaller particles in the oil for longer.

Yeah -- there are a few people on here. In fact quite a few people Stage 2+ putting down some impressive numbers on later builds without issue.

Like I have said before... If it was going to happen.. It would of happened by now...

I am approaching 14,000 miles with engine #2, but there was a failure of one [original] engine at 13K so that probably doesn't prove anything.

No problems, though.

List updated - added 13 new failures since the last update (07/28/09):

MAIN LIST - EVL1, cecilia, blackjak, White_Pearl_82, portlandsubie, patdpro, ephilli2, Rexy09, BBMN, 09RexKCMO

"UNCONFIRMED" LIST (NO VIN GIVEN) - humby45, sub4lifee, @NT

Total engine failures = 96

Who's going to be magic number 100?

I've read about 10 pages, but couldn't find what the source of issue is. Anyone knows what the problem is with certain build month?

With 13 in the last month (i.e. no signs of slowing down), this is pretty much inevitable.

Wow. Are you still within the 30 day return period you had talked about? Obviously do that if you can. Engine replacement will drop car's value, and I've read a few times that it will show up on carfax. How's the wifey taking it?

Sorry to hear about the bad luck. It only took them a day and a half to put in my new block, after it was shipped to the dealer, so it shouldn't be down that long. Have you tried talking to the dealer about just swapping out and getting a totally different car? It sounds like you're only 200 miles past the return period.

Just a sign of the times. Nobody has any patience anymore. Rather than wait a few weeks to have a newer build car your wife couldn't wait even though you knew the car you were about to purchase was most likely defective. On the bright side at least it happened at home and rather quickly so you won't have it in the back of your mind all the time.

That sucks bro. Even though we knew I still figured you were in the clear statitiscally (ie the odds that any given bad build date 09 WRX will fail still seem to be low)...guess I was wrong. I'd again try to dump it if possible. Otherwise find a dealer with a reputable service staff and push for a new turbo (and extended warranty I suppose). This is ridiculous!

Congrats, I got the same thing. Talked to them 4 weeks ago, and was starting to think they forgot about me, but found the paperwork in the mailbox today. Don't be upset if you don't see if quickly.

Feb '09 purchased a 5 door 2009 WRX that had been sitting on a dealer's lot since Sept '08. Don't have VIN info because my car is at a dealer 400km from home waiting for a replacement long block. Almost 7000 km driven with careful break in and through the 1st service interval with absolutely no issues. On a long road trip with a heavy load hammering up a long uphill grades started missing. Then the dreaded knocking noise. Nursed it along until total failure.

Subaru Canada is replacing the engine, paying some rental replacement costs and will transport the vehicle home when the engine replacement is completed.

Edit

Last 6 digits of the VIN: 804055

Complete new long block replacement under warranty. SCI has also paid all rental replacement costs and extra towing costs (160km tow = 100mi.). Car is on its way home on a transport truck also at SCI's expense.

Just letting everyone know that I got my car back. Took about a week to repair. Runs even smoother than when I bought it. Even the radio volume level that was really loud around 11 has been fixed. The Intercooler looks like it took some rocks but I am not sure if that was tham or me.

The only sad thing is that I already bought the extended warranty when I bought the car so I can't ask SOA to refund that back, or can I?

Congrats on getting your car back! As for the warranty, it doesn't hurt to ask for something. Getting an engine replaced will hurt vehicle value in the future, so they should do something to take care of you.
