Because the engine gets replaced but you keep the same turbo half the time. It's a hassle to go through. Subaru will take care of you, but it's still something I would have rather not done. Find another build date.

I wouldn't knowingly buy a car that there is a high probability that it's going to blow. I drive frequently on very desolate highways where help is not around the corner. Add winter to the mix and it becomes much more than an inconvenience.

Maybe if I lived year round in Miami and was best friends w/ the downtown Miami Subaru service manager

So what exactly happens when the motor "pops" with this problem?
The reason I ask is, I just switched jobs and I now have a 60-mile each way (mostly highway) daily commute.
My 2009 WRX (08/08 build date) is running fine at 11,500 miles, but now I'll be putting about 600-miles a week on it.
If she "blows" 50 miles from home, will I be able to limp home or does it need to be parked and towed right away?

Parked and towed is preferred. However, if the dealership tells you to drive it in, they are the ones that'll have to deal with the mess.

Shawn - mine just failed at 24,523; and another in the warranty thread at 25,xxx miles. Uh, you're not quite out of the woods yet.

How far can you drive a car with a knocking rod? How long is a piece of rope?

When it starts to sound like a diesel, pull over and call the Subaru Roadside assistance number on the window and wait. It's done. Until, or if, it happens just drive it like you normally do. Most of us that have had the "issue" have been taken care of. 27K on the new long block and all seems to be great. You already have the car so you might as well not sweat it 'til it happens. Good luck.

IIRC, I drove mine probably close to 60 miles limping home from middle-of-nowhere to the dealer.

did everyone have to get their turbo replaced after their engine failed?

I saw atleast one post from somebody who's turbo failed some thousand miles after the new engine was put in, they didn't get a new turbo with the new engine.

Their service policy is to make the call on turbo replacement after they've 1) pulled the pan to see what level of debris is in the pan; and 2) they pull the turbo oil inlet screen to see if there's any evidence of debris in the screen. If cars are shut down right after the knocking begins - it appears that in most cases the filter does it's job; the debris is in the bottom of the pan or the filter and the screen is clear. Under those circumstances they don't, as a rule, replace the turbo. If the car is driven far enough to have significantly more debris in the pan/filter - the filter bypass can open up (even partially) and allow debris through to the rest of the system - including the turbo. If the screen shows evidence of metal - they replace the turbo. They're waiting for the long block to arrive on mine to start the teardown. That's when they'll evaluate the turbo replacement.

Keep in mind - there are still dealers out there who haven't experienced this failure. My car is being repaired at one of those dealers as we speak. Having chatted with the factory service rep and 3 serv. mgrs at 3 different dealers about this - I can tell you, once they've started doing a bunch of them -- they tend to clam up about what their protocols are.

My turbo took only a day to get replaced. I think it really depends whether or not they have the part in stock.

Stupid question, but I'm looking around for an '09 WRX. So, if the problem affects "Impreza Sedan 523363 or later 2008/01/08 or later", what was the date of the stop sale? In other words, what is the range?

The problem affects the sedan and hatch. Open the driver's side door, and look down. Try to avoid the 07/08 and 08/08 build dates. There were no stop sales on the WRX's, just the 08 STI's.

Bruins - Ideal is to find one where the engine has ALREADY been replaced as there still is little clarity around the build dates that were not at risk. I've got one that will come out of the shop hopefully Thursday with new engine AND turbo and 7 year/100k warranty. Once I'm confident all is working correctly -- it goes up for sale.

Hi there. First post. I'm picking up a new 2010 wrx tomorrow and just found this site and thread. Please forgive me for not doing due dilligence on the searching, but I was hoping someone could give me a heads up as to whether or not this problem is considered to have been fixed. Basically I'm wondering if I should be out of the woods by this date?
Cheers.
