This block will be replaced in 2 yrs so we're not going to spend a bunch of money on it. My built block in my STI will eventually find it's home in the car.

You really have inspired me to take my dead RS more seriously. Just got to find a decent deal on a short block to replace the trashed one. I'll keep picking your brain all winter for ideas on getting it back up and running properly.
Thanks, Mav. |

You mean to see how bad is bad? I wouldn't mind paying for the car to be towed back and forth between my house and someone's garage for a few weekend projects. Pull out the engine, dismantle it, assess, reassemble. If it required waiting for parts, I'd just tow it back over to my place until the parts arrived. It's a thought in progress.
With full coverage, the insurance pays for the towing, so that's sweetness. If we were doing it as a project there would definitely be Canadian-esque compensation. Hahaha! |

I'm more then happy to help you out. Would be pretty cool to put some of the freshly acquired skills to work. It would be a good idea to take the motor out and see what really happened. From the sounds of it, you will at least need a block. But mine at least ran. yours doesn't. Who knows what all else may be required to get it working.
I don't mind if its towed to and from my house either. It can't stay here long lol cause Hope's car will be under the knife as of tomorrow. our RS goes back under the knife next week. |

Well the brand new N/A 99 2.5 AB pistons showed up today. Going to pop those into the 08 STi block I got prepped and ready probably tomorrow. Man if I had a third car I'd start the tear down in the garage but I don't. So I gotta use the shop this weekend. Hopefully get the valve adjustments to the head done at the same time. Rather I need to.
Also got a weird belt squeal on start up and intermit on accel or when down shifting. Belts are tight though... |

Don't worry Hope, I joined the bandwagon.
Anybody in the market for a street/track prepped Honda del Sol? $2500 takes it home, all you need to add is engine and transmission. Not kidding |

Belts may be too tight, I know that sounds odd, but are they all new belts? Sometimes fluid can spill can cause some slippage. And, even though it sounds contrary to logic, loosen the belts a bit and see if you have the same issue.

I may loosen them a bit. I've been driving the car long enough now that if something had gotten on them, it should be burned off by now.

well tear down round two started tonight. I got off work at 6pm and had the block out of the RS and torn down to the short block by 8pm. Tomorrow I'll work on the re-assemble of the new block and put it in the car. Got all day to do it so it should all get done. I got more done in the two hours today then I thought I would. Pics to follow after the weekend.
Hey chano, when you get around to doing yours. I bet it could be done in a weekend. |

Yeah, we really should. I guess the steps would be: tow to your place, disassemble the engine, see exactly what's wrong with it and what parts need replacing, tow back to my place, and then order parts as needed throughout the winter. Then come spring we can install and fine-tune.
The other big problem I have is that the rotors are rusty and the car definitely needs it's 100,000+ miles service, but I guess we'll just take everything one step at a time, eh? |

don't worry about rotor rust. 2 or three good stomps on the brake pedal fix that right up.
its only surface rust. |

well chano if you decide to rebuild a block, I have an N/A legacy 2.5i block with good pistons. Just needs the crank shaft measured to make sure its good, and a set of rods. Might cost alittle more then a 12 pack of beer though
So today's story... Got started on the block, swapped parts over that remained on the old block. Dale showed up and we began to install the pistons. Ah lets throw a wrench in there shall we? Turns out the 08 STi rods are shorter then the 2.5 N/A rods. This meant the compression ratio went lower (the wrong way) So we stood there looking at an N/A 2.5i motor and a 2008 STi motor and started brain storming. What ended up happening is Dale and I tore apart both blocks. The STi crank shaft/bearings and case were good. So were the 2.5i rods from the other block. So we combined everything. Brand new 2.5 N/A 1999 RS pistons connected to 2005 Legacy 2.5i rods housed in a 2008 STi case and attached to a 2008 STi crank shaft. Confused yet? On top of that, we are in the process of re-assembling both heads. Knowing I had low compression on cylinder #3, Dale and I filled the right side head exhaust port with brake cleaner. It pretty much just poured out the "closed" exhaust valves as though they were open. So Dale performed a very minor port job to the heads to clean up all the carbon. Also cleaned up the valves and lapped them to the head. I also cleaned up the head so it pretty much looks new. Once we were done, refilled the ports with brake cleaner and the valves do not leak. Perfect. Tomorrow we'll do the same to the other head, finish the block and put everything back into the RS. Right now its all just a pile around the car lol. |

PICS!
I hear ya. As long as I know how much to save up for, I don't mind paying. Probably a silly question that I think has a "No" answer, but I don't know WHY it's no: Can a turbo be installed on to our 2.5RS engines? |

it could be but requires changing a few things. and I wouldn't recommend putting a turbo on our n/a engines. the block doesn't have the same compression ratio or internal support.

Turbo on the N/A block CAN be done, but you can only run like 5 psi, and even that isn't recommended.

well didn't get as far today as I hoped but thats ok. Dale has been very helpful so I'm thankful for that. Got the block ready to set back together. Also got the one head finished and the second head cleaned up and ready for re-assemble. |
