Default NoVA Miata owners: car prep and repair

My dad's 99 Miata had a bad run in with a tractor trailer.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1382299

We've been talking for a long time about preping it for track days. Now that it's been totaled, this seems like the perfect opportunity.

Here's the rub:

We need to get it looking at least /okay/ cosmetically in order for either of our wives to allow us to store it anywhere near our respective houses. Obviously we need a new driver's door and we could also use rear driver's quarter panel.

Does anybody have any leads on where to source these parts cheaply?

Also, any good sources on how to do a basic track prep on a 99+ car? Interior stripping, safety, etc...

Hypnotk (Lance) manages the Brown Mazda body shop. He's done my Miata and a few others. PM him for good prices and outstanding work.

I sent you a pm with some details. Your best bet in general is to get in touch with some spec miata guys (me being one) for sourcing parts and finding a good repair shop. There's a wealth of knowledge in the spec miata community, and it's all applicable to building a street/track car.

As for the body shop, the one that we use and is a sponsor is Michael's in Inwood, WV (because it's 10 miles from Summit Point). It might be a bit of a hike for you, but he really knows how to fix a race car (ie. everything is good and straight, paint/prep is good enough, and its dirt cheap). I'm sure you won't have trouble finding a shop in NoVa though.

True...brainfart. If the car is gonna see future wrecks, that's a great suggestion, too.

-Brake pads (Axxis Ultimates should be fine, at first at least)
-Brake fluid (ATE should be fine)
-Rollbar (soft top up is not kosher)
-Tires (Azenis or something decent)
-Hardtop (optional but definitely nice to have)

That's all you really need to take a Miata on track.

Seats/harnesses are a nice bonus tho.

I thought NASA required harnesses? Are there any organizations that don't require harnesses for track days?

*is considerring dropping some coin for seats and harnesses*

I don't think there are any organizations that *require* them for track days. Stock belts and seats are okay. The biggest issue with them (and the reason they are a nice bonus) is that if you have some sort of accident you might hit your head on the rollbar. But there are plenty of folks that track Miatas with the stock seats. If you do that I would definitely definitely pad the rollbar with the serious stuff that you buy at OG racing, not the squishy Nerf crap that most people put on their rollbars. At least you'll be hitting it with your helmet.

Me, I bought the seats

Gents - thanks very much for the information.

If anybody has a Mazdamotorsports account, can you run the following part numbers for prices?

Those are (barely) fine to get you to the track; I wouldn't run a go-kart with Ultimates on it let alone a 2200# Miata for any track events. Get Hawk HP+ at a minimum for HPDEs and consider Blues if you are doing longer than 30 minute sessions.

I did seven track events with them, stock 1.6L brakes and never had any fade except when they were down to the backing plates, and that was in June.

I was on Azenis, not race tires, and a largely stock suspension, but they were fine. If you are running race tires or you're really experienced you need more pad but they are fine to start out on, IMHO.

Maybe not track events, but the Ultimates work extremely well on the streets and for autocrosses. I've got much better initial bite and stopping power than the Miata's I've driven/ridden in for autocrosses.

I'm sure track stuff is different.

If the car is primarily going to be used on track I would recommend a full track pad. We race on Carbotech XP10 front, XP8 rear. The Hawk Blues are super cheap and work well, but they have much less modulation than the carbotechs. They are also super rough on rotors (but it doesn't matter much at $13/piece).

Matt and other SM/track guys: where do you buy your pads, rotors, etc?

While searching for cheap rotors, the best I found was $18 or so from NAPA.

thx,

Ed

Rockauto and importrp are both pretty cheap, IIRC.

Rockauto is good for rotors. We order our pads straight from Carbotech (ask for Danny if you call) and they have $10 rotors they sell with their pads.

I think that Planet Miata has a deal on hawk blues and rotors although I'm not sure.

I also run Carbotec XP10/XP8 and they work great on the track. Fairly quiet even on the street. I get my rotors from Carbotech, they cost $12 for fronts and $10 for rears.

I don't think seats and 6 pt harness are optional if you will be on the track in a Miata. Harddog HCDD bar works fine, get whatever 6 pt harness you like (suggest pull ups for the laps belts and pull down for the shoulder belts).

Depends on the track and organization. I'd find out who you'll run with and plan the harness/rollbar from that. I wouldn't drive a Miata on the street or track without a rollbar (saved my life in a non-track rollover) and you don't want your head popping over the rollbar when you rollover so, I'd run a harness too.

I was at Summit with BSR last week. They let an old british roadster run with a rollbar but, it had no front windshield frame so, in a rollover, it would have been bar and front of the hood of the car. I considered it a deathtrap and was surprised they let him on track (he was a rolling roadblock in group two also).

Miata's look like great fun but, I'd think your arms would get tired with all the pass signals. Turbo Miata's are fast but, many don't seem to survive a track day without problems.

I would say that harnesses are an absolute must.

You won't necessarily be throwing point bys right and left. With the new pavement at summit the fast guys are already running in the 1:26's...you might have people pass you on the straight but they will serve as rolling chicanes in the talent section. This past weekend at the emra 4-hour enduro there were miatas passing grand am lexus is300s and a gto.

I was 1/2 kidding about the arm thing. First time I went out with my unmodified WRX in group 2, my arm got sore. It wasn't fast on the straights OR in the corners. It's alot better now. I think Miata's are great. With the right driver and prep, they're fast.

After my first two-day event, I think it was NASA-Summit Main in September of 2005, I looked at my arm a couple days later and there was a bruise on my left forearm. I thought to myself, and then realized that it was from my forearm hitting the hardtop when giving point-bys

Update:

It would apparently only cost and additional $100/6 months to insure the car.

I estimate about $500 to get it looking cosmetically tolerable again.

I think another $500 would get it ready for some very basic track days (roll bar, new rotors and pads, etc). Not too bad at all.

Now I need to get consensus from my better half. We'll see how it goes.

Wow, that's totalled?? Good luck with the project. Might want to check with planetmiata.com for some of those body parts too.

Well, the car has 250k miles on it, so it's not worth much.

Planetmiata is on my radar. Thanks!
