Default MAIC aquarium keepers

This will probably get locked, I'll probably get flamed, but I'll give it a shot.

Any of you folks keep aquariums/ponds?

Personally, I'm new to this and my collection isn't much to brag about. However I'm incredibly absorbed by this hobby and would like to share aquarium talk with locals. Hopefully I can find out about some awesome stores in the maic area!

My tank collection includes:

180g freshwater
90g saltwater
55g freshwater
29g freshwater

My fish collection includes:
Reticulated stingray
3x saddled Bichirs
Fire eel
6x blue botias
5x Emerald Cory cats
Sunburst fire lobster

Do you have all those tanks up and running if so where do you find time to maintain all of them. I've got a 110g set up for saltwater and a little 10g set up in my daughters room for freshwater and I sometimes feel to consumed by them but they defiantly are fun to watch

Cool thread.

I have a large koi pond with about 15 large koi and goldfish and we also have bluegill that I caught fishing and they have spawned numerous times.

Inside I have a 50 gal with two Jack Dempsey cichlids that don't get along all of the time lol

Also have a 30 gal that started with a pair of convict cichlids but they have had a lot of off spring right now the tank is crowed with about 15 and they have more babies now. If anyone wants some they are free to a good home. Pm me if you want some.

I've always had freshwater tanks with usually aggressive fish. I've had the 50 gal set up with community fish but that got boring. I like feeding my fish other fish lol. Saltwater is my next step, probably when I move out.. I want a lion fish or a octopus.

I've had a 55 freshwater for 15 years. Had a 14 inch tiger Oscar a couple years, then red-belly piranhas, Jack Dempsey & tiger Oscars and now glowfish cause the kid liked them. And a sponge and Mazda snail that live in a pineapple.

His name is Raylan (from the show Justified)

2 of the 6 botias

The rest of the botias (came in 2 orders)

The 180 (next to my great dane). It looks so narrow in that picture, but it's 24"!

I'll try to get better pictures, I'm an awful photographer.

The 180 isn't ready for the ray yet, but I am almost done with the cycle. It's been about a month now! The ray is in the 55 with the eel and my Bichirs. They get along well. I really enjoy maintaining tanks though.

The 90 just threw a crazy curve and we removed the fish. So it's down as well.

This thread is doing better than I expected I'm glad there are aquarium nuts there.

Those are some nice fish! I wish I could get my Bichirs to breed.

Id love an octopus. I got the salt setup for my wife and come to find out I'm very allergic to reef crystals (saltwater mix)

Thanks!! your raylan is awesome .That's crazy you are allergic. I'm really debating on getting a small salt tank just to start out on.

Let's JDM styling!

I have a silver/orange goldfish that my girlfriend won at a carnival-themed wedding (not even kidding - it was unbelievably fun too). In almost 2 years he's gone from about 2" long to 7-8" long. He thinks he's a shark.

pic from about a year ago:

I've started to get in to aquarium stuff as a hobby...

He's been through two tanks and is currently in a 26 gallon w/ concave front. Wrapped the wood stand in gloss black 3M "1080" vinyl (stuff people wrap their cars with; not shown). Came out amazingly well and the texture of the wood grain shows through - looks like piano wood with the glossiness. The tank lid I wrapped in 3M "DiNoc" dry carbon fiber wrap which people also use on cars (pictured). The stock fluorescent lights kept blowing out, so I've since added a 21-LED marineland reef light with fake moonlight and timer (not shown). This: http://reefbuilders.com/wp-content/b...-fixture-4.jpg

I really want to try the "Aqua-Scaping" stuff ( http://images.lmgtfy.com/?q=aquascaping before I get asked) which is the JDM-style for fish tanks ...but my little guy tears up plants and knocks stuff over. Currently owe him some new ones as the current swords are bitten down to the stem.

I love the vinyl idea, that's brilliant. I would have never thought of that. I'm a huge fan of live plants, they do wonders with amonia/nitrites/nitrates and look awesome. I need to get some more as well.

Yeah it's so weird, it's the ONLY thing I know I'm allergic to.

Do it! Check craigslist and try to get a 55 with a protein skimmer and everything included. That's how I got all of my tanks

http://pristineaquariums.com/ - Honestly the only place I would go to out here. Definitely know their stuff. I had a 30 gallon tall tank with a few cichlids until they all out grew the tank and decided to give them all away. Fish are awesome but I'm military and have noone that would want to take care of them while I'm deployed.

Haha after I posted it I thought I was dumb because I saw your profile said delaware but was too lazy to take it down. I'm glad I actually helped you out, let us know if you find it.

Look up aquaponics. You use the water from your fresh water fish to water your plants and drain the water back into your tank. The nitrates feed the plants the plants clean the water for the fish. no need to ever change your water our check your ph. All you need to do is remember to feed your fish.

Wow, this thread is going really well! I never thought of that.

Edit: Pristine Aquariums was kind of a disappointment. A lot of the fish were in horrible environments, for example a reticulated ray with a vampire barracuda and blue botias in a tank with extremely bright lights and neon orange gravel. The botias had no color at all and the ray looked extremely stressed as well.

Their selection of cichlids was incredible though, with probably 40 percent of the ranks housing them.

I wondered in a year ago despite there being 3 employees 'working' and me being the only customer in the store, in the 20 minutes I was looking not one employee asked if I needed any help.

Same thing happened to me.

When I got back to De and went to my normal store they greeted me with my first name and asked how my ray was.

Subsequently, I'm looking into another ray. I've got a female and I'd like to get a male. I've got enough space, just unsure of how well a breeding pair lives together.

Wow that place sounds bad. The house of tropicals is one of favorite aquarium centers. Check them out if you are ever near bwi. That would be cool to mate stingrays tho. I wonder how many they have?

Sorry about that, like i said I only was a cichlids guy so it was a great place to me, I hardly know anything about salt water fish. They were kind of stand off-ish when I would go there but they were working, it honestly doesn't bother me unless they're doing absolutely nothing and still don't come over to at least ask how you are doing.

I'll visit that place eventually. Depending on the ray, they can have quite a few pups. A guy on a forum I was looking at woke up to 12 pups!

People with zero experience will tell you they are incredibly hard, expert only fish. They will say they are weak and intolerant to any variations.

Nope. They are hardy and VERY smart fish. Obviously be careful, but I'd say intermediate care at most. They do need a good amount of space though. Reticulated stingrays only get to about 14" disk size, which is much better than the 39" disk of the motoro ray!

Wow that's awesome. My father had rays and he loved them. How well do they get along with other fish?
