Default Future Mini Lexus Quietly Announced At New York Auto Show

Quote:
Club Lexus picked up on a sparsely attended NYIAS (New York International Auto Show March 21-30) closing session with Lexus/Toyota at the "Toyota Live!" event that was mostly overlooked by the automotive press.

During the news review portion of the interactive show, Lexus discussed several upcoming changes to their model line as well as new vehicles that will make their way onto showroom floors near term (defined as model years 2009 - 2011). The one that caught us by surprise was the reveal of a planned small vehicle in the Lexus lineup termed a "compact luxury hybrid".

Said an unnamed corporate spokesperson at the event "Given the pressure of rising fuel costs and requests from many of our loyal customers and dealers, Lexus is planning to rapidly bring to market a compact luxury hybrid vehicle, currently called the LF-Ch". When asked for more details on how quickly Lexus plans to bring this auto to a showroom near you, the spokesperson shared that existing and new mechanical platforms will be married with an all-new luxury interior design for a compact vehicle that should begin to be available in late 2009.

Finally a small car that doesn't look like a squished, stick up the rear model.

Looks like badge engineering to me. Except this time they'll use a Toyota Yaris instead of a Camry.

I doubt it will sell well. People seem to want HUUUUUGE luxury cars that are living rooms on wheels.

I think it might sell well... There are plenty of those who want the name without associated price tag.. I'm sure college students would be all over this... It would sell well in Europe also I'm sure..

college students SHOULD be all about saving money if they had a working neuron or two, not about driving Lexuses.

that said, i'm well out of college and would strongly consider a small, hybrid Lexus.

You'd be amazed as to what you find rolling around in some of them... The usual Lexi, BMW M3's, M5's, the odd 7 series,E class with the CEC body kits, Hummer H1's with the aftermarket wheels, the usual Range Rover sports, etc.. Yeh... they are saving money

In all seriousness though, I'm sure this will be a hit with the college crowd though who have a bit of money to spend on a car, and for those who would might be looking for a Benz B-class also.

hmm... i just wonder how much its going to cost... It may be getting into MINI territory and if it came down to it, i would much rather have a MINI than a rebranded Yaris.

This is pretty much why the Integra was such a big seller. Acura name, Honda price.

I'd take a sub $25k compact Lexus hatchback.

Except the Integra wasn't a rebadged popular sub compact. Unless you want to say it was a rebadged Honda Integra.

my thoughts exactly... three words that i never thought would be used to describe the same car... wouldn't this car be considered sub-compact?

A3, A4, 3-series, C-class are all no bigger than an Impreza. This thing does seem to be pushing it though ...

a Lexus Prius-spinoff has been reported here before. this isn't much more of a stretch.

Lots of folks have the money for bigger cars but live in dense cities. These folks probably wouldn't mind having a small more luxurious hybrid to scoot around in. Lots of those same folks buy mini coopers now but not all those people really care about the mini's performance aspects and just want something small yet nice along with a nice badge and gets better mileage than a mini. If this is real it'll fit the bill nicely.
