07 Sti lost 3rd-6th gear....
1st and 2nd don't sound so great either. I was in 6th at about 50mph and clunk...I can "shift" into 3rd-6th, but it is like there is nothing there..except neutral. This comes almost 1 year to the day that my motor failed. I've about had it with Subarus in general... If I didn't still owe on the car I'd be shopping for a new car, and not a transmission.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not sure what the best route to take will be, replace with new, rebuild it, buy a used(the thought scares me) How hard is it to swap it out myself? Any suggestions appreciated... I'm definitely not thankful for my STi this season. At all. Andy

Have it rebuilt?
A used 6sp is going to cost at least $4k just for the part. |

you could buy a gearset or the RA 5 speed and downgrade for less maybe.

My car is well maintained and driven, so much so that Subaru warranteed the 3 motors that failed last year(bad ringland, failed oil pick-up, etc)...I still had over 60% clutch life at 45,000miles, I now have 72,000 miles on the clock.
I'm not looking for reasons why it failed...I'm well aware of how hard it is on the trans to be cruising with traffic in 6th gear.. I just thought I'd see if I could get some good advice. |

I wouldn't worry much about buying a used 6 speed. A higher mileage one might have some syncro issues so watch out for that.
Other then that, pat yourself on the back for being one of the few people to destroy an 07 box |

A Russian bought himself a brand new sports car and comes back to the dealer within days with a broken transmission. They replace it under warranty. 2 days later he's back with the same problem. The tech is shocked, replaces the trans and asks him to show him how he drives. They get in and "You know, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and Rocket!"

I'll end up having to plunk down some serious $$ for a new trans. I'll have to see how involved the removal/install will be if I want to do it myself. Looks like no tropical vacation this winter for us. Andy |

Thanks man I appreciate it a ton. I will be figuring out the best way to attack it. I'll be getting info/prices over the next few days and going from there.

Dropping the tranny is very simple
drain oil take off crossmember disconnect driveshaft axles and eight bolts on tranny disconnect battery starter slave cylinder and the clutch fork pin located behind the slave cylinder you should then be ready to pull out the tranny |
