Default UTEC - first impressions

Well I got my UTEC last night. Installation was a breeze, pulled out the unichip and installed the UTEC. Took a grand total of 20 minutes.

I had been using a TurboXS stage 1 unichip with an AVC-R for boost control. It ran quite well at full throttle but had lots of part throttle jerkyness. I was running 15.5 psi.

With the UTEC in its super smooth. No jerkyness at all. I love it.

Using my little APEXi RSM to measure power, I logged 209 hp before I installed the UTEC. My first few runs after installation came to 200 hp. Then i noticed the big difference in my old boost curve versus the new curve. With the AVC-R i had 15.5 psi in every gear with a slight taper to 14 psi at redline. With the default map in the UTEC im running 14.5 psi with a much steeper taper.

Question for those that have it up and running. I have the bleeder valve turned out 1 full turn currently, if im understanding everything correctly adding 1 more turn should put me to about the same boost levels that I had before without altering the boost map. With the UTEC is it better to use the valve for the adjustment or should i just change the duty cycle on the map ?

Hey, sorry to hijack this thread dude but.......I have an RSM too. What did you set as your weight? Where do you see your peak HP numbers?

I have a UTEC w/Stage4. My RSM has seen as high as 278 in 4th gear...

The new UTEC gives me about 260 but way down at 2nd & 3rd.

Thanks!

The TXS instructions (look at the bottom of the Stage 4 Installation Instructions page on their site) show a table of approximate boost values.

Now that you have a UTEC, it's REALLY easy to see if you are on target:

1) Flip the switch to your stage 1 map
2) Hop in the car with a laptop and connect to the UTEC
3) Go out onto a highway, start capturing Datalog 1
4) Do several 4th gear pulls from 2000rpm up to 5500 or 6000rpm.
5) Pull over and pop your results into Excel or a decent text viewer. Make sure that the boost you are seeing (the MAP column) at each rpm point approximately matches the targets i nthe instructions table. Adjust if necessary: 1ish psi per ABC turn is about right.

I have mine set to 16psi max per the table and the car feels great.

Glad to see things smoothed out with the UTEC. We tune Stage 1 on 93 octane fuel to 16psi up to 5250rpm than taper it to 14psi at redline. I would turn the ABC out 1 more turn and see if that does it. However, you can also just go into the boost map and increase the boost values at the RPM points where the boost is low. After all, we made the UTEC user tunable for a reason!

How does boost control on the utec compare to the avcr. I want the ability to set boost by gear and by rpm. Currently, I get greater boost in higher gears which I don't want and boost drop near redline when I want it to hold.

Thanks,

Greg

Well I messed with it a bit this morning. By simply turning the bleeder screw 1/2 of a turn out i got the target boost closer to what i want. I get a peak of 15 psi with a nice taper at redline.

Partial throttle boost behavior is much nicer compared to my AVC-R, it wanted to build full boost asap. Which was great when I had it floored but for the stupid traffic we had around here it was not really the best solution.

I have not had a chance yet to compare the peak boost in 4th and 5th gear as compaired to 1st and 2nd gear. Right now the first 3 gears seem to be just about perfect.

Guys.... I've been beta testing the new closed loop boost control software... it simply ROCKS!

No... it cannot set by gear..

But it sets by TPS and RPM. But the thing is that it's ROCK solid.

It's great... I'll downshift and nail it when set at 18 psi.. it climbs to 18 in like half a second, and it's like it hit a brick wall.. no spike, not nothing.. just STOPS!

This is all possible via the user adjustable gain (like an SBC-ID), so you can increase response, or mellow it out.

So... the nice thing.. being closed loop... all gears will give you the same boost... not like 1st and second being light... 3rd being spot on, and 4th and 5th creeping up!

I LOVE THIS THING!

Looks like I will be selling my SBC-id that I have been waiting to install with the UTEC.

We're soon to test the matrix version of the beta, if it goes through with flying colors like the alpha did, then it's blessed and ya'll get it..

There really weren't kinks before.. it was a matter of what worked good for a 5MT didn't work good for a 4EAT, and vice versa...

ALL OF US are happy with this one

So with the new version of the software you get to set the duty cycle of the solenoid and the gain for each TPS/RPM Cell ? Do you get to work in the target boost PSI as well ?

Jorge,

When they make the closed loop boost control available, will it require downloading new software only, or do they have to make any hardware adjustments to the board?

And what about the gain control you talked about? Will that be an add-on that current users will have to buy? Or will they send one to people who already have the UTEC?

It sounds awesome!!!! I love the idea of being able to control boost from the car (like I do with my SBC-id now) but also having a smooth boost curve.

all in software

gain is a variable that you define.

Kind of like a ramp slope.

You'll set 1 gain level in the parameters menu. You can than program boost level by TPS and RPM point. At this point, it will not be a target boost level, just a number. Higher numbers = higher boost, lower = lower boost.

Jorge,

Thanks for replying so fast.

I see, when you said "like and SBC-id" I was thinking it would have a knob or something that you could adjust from the car.

So you're saying the gain will be set in the software?
