i was hoping to be able to get my M1 license before i go back to school this fall, but everywhere seems to be booked. any suggestions in our area? if i get a permit and find a bike to use can i ride without having completed the course even though i am under 21?
thanks in advance for all your help!

Yeah, unfortunately this is the BAY AREA, where everybody and their mother has already been wherever you're going. I had to wait 3 months for a spot at the Two Wheel Safety Training school in Hayward. Wish I could help you out ... but I don't really recommend you to do without the training, as it's very helpful...

I called 1-800-CC-RIDER. They'll read off all the schools in the bay area. Every place was a 3 month wait however. Gilroy was not quite 3 months so i went with it. Get Kevin McDonald if u can, a full time instructor at Gilroy. it's hard to imagine a better instructor than him. good luck! -g

hm... my instructor over at prospect HS was also named kevin. his one rule of thumb: EEEEEAAAASY... if it's the same guy, then i highly recommend him as well. gives insight from his many years of ridiing experience. and he took the course not too many years ago. good guy.

Call the guys at Scuderia West in SF. They probably know of a school not booked up. They're pretty dialed in with the bay area motorcycle scene.
I recomend you go to CC Rider (Beginning Instruction) then if you have the $$$ California Superbike School with Keith Code. You will really learn how to ride and drive really Faaaast and Smoooooth. Scuderia: www.scuderia.com Cal Superbike: www.superbikeschool.com |

my problem is that my car insurance is costing me an exorbitant amount... i need to find a cheaper way of getting around. so is the permit thingy doable until i can attend the school? and is anyone here willing to give me some advice on a good used bike for under 2500 or $3000 and maybe give me a few riding tips? i just need to get around town and to school for a while until i move.
thanks! |

Get an old Suzuki 650. Pretty heavy but a good ride. Plus insurance is cheap on these things especially at progressive. I have it for 380 bucks a year. The bike was only 750 too.

You're taller than me, so I'm not sure how well these fit you. But they fit me perfectly -- a good compromise between sport and touring position makes it easier to learn to ride.

kier,
housing in santa cruz? i heard its quite expensive down there! eh.. if you really want a motorcycle, check this place out in Emeryville. its called WorldMotor (i hope they are still around). they import rare japanese and Euro sport bikes. one of my friend bought a CBR400RR from them.. yup.. a 400cc.. that thing was very easy to toss around! happy bike shopping! hahah cal |

yulatek,
i think my friend paid $4000+ for it.. its a used bike of course. yeah i just called 411 and they said the place and number are no longer listed in Emeryville. i guess they went out of business or probably moved to elsewhere.. cal |

Just so I probably won't drop by my insurance agent for another two weeks -- how expensive are insurance for motorcycles? They don't usually cost more than a car insurance, do they? Sorry for the naive question, but horror stories abound...
