I'll start here I guess..... anyone in the area know how to set timing/change a timing belt on an avcs equipped Subaru? My timing cover somehow decided it didn't want to be part of my car anymore and tried to take my timing belt with it. If anyone wants to do a housecall and has the tool to take off the avcs cam gear and knows how to set timing I would be ever so greatful for the help. I'm obviously willing to pay! Please only agree to this if you know what you're doing, it goes without saying but I don't have the money to be a guinea pig right now.
Exactly what I need to be done: Remove old timing belt Remove passengers side cam gears Install new rear timing cover Reinstall cam gears Install new timing belt I already have the radiator and fans out. I was actually replacing a busted factory radiator (crappy plastic endtanks) when I noticed the damage to the timing belt. I'm extremely lucky that the belt stopped with the damaged area right in my face. I need this done ASAP... I know it's the holidays and people have plans, myself included, but if anyone is willing to do this but can't this week, still let me know in case I can't find anyone else. My brand new (only 2k miles) gates racing belt: r.i.p. |

Yeah. I was trying to get in touch with you before I finished the radiator but figured my car isn't going anywhere anytime soon so I just stopped and got cleaned up. I ordered all of the parts from the east coast so they should hopefully be here toward the end of next week. Pming..

Those cam gears can be a real pain. Hope this thread helps. Old timing belt with vice grips works. I usually just use a plain jane 10mm allen wrench rather than a socket, and put a jack handle on it.

If it only has 2k miles on it that has to be an install error.... Who put it on?
Also if you mark each cam gear and the old belt before you take anything off, then mark the new belt with the same marks all you need to do is match up the marks on the new belt with the corresponding marks on the gears. As long as you loosen the cam gears before the belt comes off it will work. YMMV but i have used this method when replacing a few different belts. If it was me...... there isnt much of that rear cover missing. Just throw a belt on it and call it a day. |

I did it on my wifes beetle which is an interference engine. The timing of the engine never changes, the cam and crank never change position. A new belt will have the exact same number of teeth. Its much simplier and easier to do it that way and if the marks wont line up then you know for sure that it has to be re timed, if they do line up then there is no way the timing can be off since it was correct in the first place. |

Since the gears were off recently anyway, they should come off pretty easy. Did you torque them to 75ft/lbs? Just try the belt method. I have the tool for a wrx, but not sti. Im about to rebuild an sti motor so wish me luck as well. Ill probably buy the tool soon.

Yea my supra buddy went out there, it's pretty ridiculous how long it takes the cops to show up to something serious, but if more then 2 cars meet in a parking lot they are there to save the day!!!! |

Thats for sure. Cant have anyone gathering around making friends while drinking Arizona Green Tea. People go to jail for such offenses. Especially when photography is involved.
