As far as what rifle to buy you have to ask yourself one question first..... What is the purpose of the rifle?

If the rifle is just for target shooting than anything will probably work. If the rifle will be used for home defense then you should really look into a higher end model than builds them correctly. All of the cheaper brands cut corners to save cost when they make their rifles.

The rifles that I believe are good to trust your life with are:

Colt
BCM
LMT
KAC
Noveske
Daniel Defense

To a slightly lesser degree:

Smith and Wesson
Spikes (Actually makes a really good rifle but has some shady business practices)
PSA

Any of the Tier 1 rifles are good enough to go into combat with. Actually several on that list due on a regular basis.

You can get a Colt 6920 (the civilian version of the M4, only difference is the barrel is 16 inches instead of 14.5 and not auto switch) at Walmart now for just over 1000 and you can find them online for cheaper sometimes.

If you buy the lower reciever seperately you can get a BCM for around 850 bucks.

If I was in your shoes I would buy the lower reciever locally and go online and buy a complete upper from BCM. Total with bolt carrier group should run you right around 850-900.
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-M...-urg-m4-16.htm
Looks like their Bolt Carrier Groups are out of stock right now but you can see the price.

Here is a BCM video featuring Travis Haley. Doesnt really add anything to the discussion but its cool

Im personally a huge fan of Colt. My personal Colt has a lot of useage, not as much as Id like lately but thats about to change. I clean mine every thousand rounds or so. ARs need to be lubed, not necessarily clean.

Ar's are a great home defense tool, much better than a pistol by far... shooting 55gr hp bullets cut over penetration out completely... there are a lot of great ar's out there one that seems to slip under the radar constantly is bushmaster.

as far as S&W's avoid them right now, i have three of them in class right now that are all brand new less than 100-200rds fired that have loose barrels and barrel nut/delta rings. Its a problem that will probably be resolved quickly, amazing what happens what a gunsmithing college calls a company and says wtf... but for the time being avoid them

also look at the price difference between the s&w and the stag... they are the same guns with a different roll stamp.

The biggest point I can make is TRAINING TRAINING TRAINING!!!
Any gun is absolutely useless without good training

Are they the lower end models? I have the higher end model the 15T and it's been a fantastic rifle. Over 2,500 rounds and not one problem. I've shot it dirty as hell too. I actually probably need to clean it.

Awesome. The Colt 6920 is The Gold Standard for a reason.

LMT and Larue both make fantastic long range shooters. A guy on another Forum I frequent shoots a lot of long range with his LMTs. Both 5.56 SPR and Recces and a 308 MWS.

Here is his LMT SPR and RECCE.

Here is his MWS.

The OBR dominated the International Sniper Competition at Ft Benning a few years ago. Since then the rules have changed to only allow service rifles to compete. On Magpuls Art of the Precision Rifle dvd set Travis Haley uses an OBR 308 to make hits out to a mile.

Hey gang, a little OT but does anyone have a line on a decent used gun safe or recommendations? The wife and I will be fostering kids soon and there are some rules for securing guns. Plus, I'd just like to have a place to secure them before adding to the collection. My little GunVault just isn't going to cut it anymore.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know of any used ones for sale but ill keep an eye out. However new ones can be had for not terribly expensive, especially when you consider what could be taken during a burglary.

My 350ish lb safe was bought at Sportsmans Wharehouse for around 400 bucks. My brother in law bought a 900 lb safe from Cabelas for under a grand. I would also recommend looking at Costco.

Colt's do have a great reputation.

Regarding safes...a number of places have them as part of their Black Friday deals.

The Magpul edition is just a 6920 with Magpul parts. It's a great gun and a good buy. The MOE for end does take some getting used to for some but it's a great inexpensive, versatile system for attaching lights and forward grips.

I'd say good pickup on that Colt. If you decide you don't like any of those Magpul parts...well, it's an AR so sell/trade as needed

Do you prefer the handle purely for aesthetic reasons?
After carrying the various colt versions for over 22 years, I can count the times I actually carried them by the handle on one hand.
The modular handle and ability to add sights closer to the bore sight was by far the best improvement we saw.

Teaser:

I was gonna tell you guys about how my buddies gun got stolen, city of ________ PD did nothing even though we pretty much handed them the suspect, used in a crime by someone else other than the thief and then recovered by ph-x PD.

I decided not too though, not until the gun is back in his possession (once the case is closed). Also, I'll have more details.

Damn guys, sorry for the lack of punctuation haha. I was turning into that guy. I dont know i just like the actual iron sight holes on the classic vs the flip up on mine. kinda is like a sloppy square.

Go with what you are comfy and accurate with. I met a vet recently that preferred using irons over his issued optic because that's what he grew up shooting with...was just more comfortable/accurate. My guess is that he had so much muscle memory (esp in the eyes) related to using irons that it made getting used to a magnified optic very difficult for him.

Something else to consider, Flatfoot--they make sights that are basically just the rear-sight portion of the carry handle setup, leaving room for an optic in front of it. You could could do this and run it cowitnessed with an optic such as an Aimpoint.

So I'm wanting to do some shooting this weekend, but am anticipating everyone else will too. I normally do Table Mesa Rd., but it gets full quick. With that said, are there any good (and legal) spots with lots of room out on the east side?

FYI my bro in law went up there last week and that big shooting spot is all closed now. I'm talking about the area that is like a small valley with the metal stakes on the opposite side.

I hear good things about that round. Great long range cartridge. I have heard its a barrel burner though.

I hope TM was not closed. I'm going out there tomorrow. I'll have to check it out. I do know that Arizona won the BLM close down.
So all BLM land was currently still open.

I always clean up after myself and pick up after others. Leave the site cleaner then I found it. I wish others would do as such. I helps protect the land. I've also reported some people dumping out there. Which I think starts the problem. People dump, Then shooters use their trash and then don't clean up. Then the clean up crew see's the gun shots and shells and blames the whole mess on gun owners.

I think leaving BLM land open for shooting will help with migrating problems. They can jump a fence. But can they get past the fire?
