I thought that might be the case. I had little intention of getting one, but figured it was worth asking about since they are so cheap.

Where is a good place for picking up stripped lowers?

there are so many places out there selling lowers that its not even funny and they are all pretty much the same... as my instructor would say its a blond, brunet theory, its all personal preference... check around for the best prices is the best idea. i have found that if you know what you are doing its more about the internals than anything else...

Yup...and I'd be down for a group buy. Plus i kinda want a 1:9 or 1:10 5.56 pistol. Related question, what's a decent price for a .308 AR lower (functional/reliable, but nothing fancy)?

Why do you want a 1in10 twist for a pistol?

to use lower grain, higher velocity rounds...to help compensate for the lesser velocity from using a 10-ish inch barrel.

A 1in7 will shoot all the way down to 50 sometimes 45 grain without problems. Even with the short barrels the heavier rounds strill tend to be some of the best. My old squad leader has a confirmed kill at 400 meters with his Mk18 (10.3 inch barrel) shooting M262 (77 grn OTM).

You would be surprised at how fast good 5.56 rounds are going out of the short barrels.

Why this over a standard AR?

Huh, I thought 55 was around the lowest reliable for 1:7. That said, I do see it shooting between 37 and 64 (45-50 most often)...and I think 1:9 will do 64 ok, or no?

Related question: are there safety concerns with shooting light rounds in a fast barrel...say someone shot a 45gr out of a 1:6.5?

Really light weight and leightly constructed bullets can come apart if driven through to fast a twist. Going with a slow twist like a 1in9 will handicap you much more than a 1in7 will.

The fact is that the guys who shoot bad guys for a living with short barreled rifles choose 62+ grain rounds because they work better than the lighter bullets. Though the lighter weight TSX rounds shoot well in the faster twist because they are longer than normal for their weight.

AR style guns are pretty much a tinker toy platform, they are made to be modular... Its all personal preference and advertising when it comes to brand, style, twist, mods, ect... the truth of the matter is a 1 in 7 bbl is the best rate for a defensive rifle simply because it will handle a wider variety of bullet weights and still maintain accuracy at given ranges. the slower the twist rate on an AR bbl the more unstable the bullet becomes, hence why the originals had a 1 in 15 rate bbl. the 55gr bullet they fired was intended to be effective at no more than 200 or so meters and the bullet was so unstable that it would tumble upon impact with soft tissue. however now-a-days your best bet with modern loads is a 1 in 7 with a 55gr or larger hp projectile. the bullet is traveling at such a high velocity that it will fragment upon impact...

okay rant on the ar is over... sorry

Took the wife to shoot some clays today at Ben Avery. First time she has ever shot a shotgun. We got her a semi auto Remigton 1187 20 gauge rental and she kicked my ass. She did phenomenally well. I might have a competitive trap and skeet shooter on my hands.

Flame at will.

So guys I'm 20 and soon to be 21 looking into purchasing my first pistol. I have no experience in safety or weapons at all. So looking into what resources i can find (books, classes, training etc) To better my knowledge and skills.
Main purpose of carrying a fire arm is self defense.

if you are in the valley... as dumb as this may sound look at the firearms classes that GCC offers in there administration of justice classes... they are some of the best classes you will find for the price. all the instructors are VERY experienced and train outside of GCC

To purchase from a store, you will need your AZ DL, ability to pass the background check (they do this quickly via telephone), know your SS #, and the $$.

That said, don't just 'go buy one.' Feel a number of them in your hands to see what you like. I would suggest starting with a 9mm. It has good energy/HP loads, but has less recoil and is cheaper than .40/.45 (allowing you to practice with it more). Remember, a gun is only as good as the person shooting it--one hit with a .22 is better than ten misses with a .45.

My opinion is that the Smith and Wesson M&P is one of the best values out there in a pistol.

Your first safety lesson: ALL guns are ALWAYS loaded (treat every gun as if it were loaded). Thusly, never it point it at anything you are not willing to destroy.

There are a number of small gun shops all over the place, but Sportsman's Warehouse would be a good place to look. I'm prolly going to be heading there on Friday sometime. When do you turn 21?

i see thanks for the info, and i turn 21 in about 6 months. that is why i want to be prepared by then to see what i should shop for. Background wont be an issue being my job doesnt allow any criminal hires. Also do have my AZ DL, although is there an age restriction? it's 21+ to carry open or concealed right? i believe im only old enough to purchase a shotgun at this point and time?
9mm is what i was considering i know a few people with gloc's and i like the feel if that matters? held a baretta once does have a different feel, again total newb but ill look into your recommendation and i do have large hands so not sure if small firearm to "overgrip" is good or bigger mass firearm with "snug" fit?
also looking into the GCC courses for safety and cleaning.
