Those are sensors, not switches. A switch has an on/off function. I'm not aware of an oil switch.

A low oil sensor doesnt cause consumption.

I don't see what the (!!) is about. Is this really excessive for an exhaust valve?

I'd rather have a bit too much oil going to the valve stems than not enough.

I'm just glad we're past the "all new cars are supposed to burn oil" and "you just don't know abouy subarus, its normal to burn that much oil" phase and actually have some folks getting into the conditions of the engines upon teardown. Thats a huge step!

Subaru's spec for exhaust valve stem to valve guide is 0.0016" to 0.0026". Nothing unusual here.

It looks like the exhaust valves on this engine have their stems pointed slightly towards the ground. This is unlike any other cylinder configuration. I'm not sure how important gravity is for getting oil to the guides/stems, but it seems to work against them in this engine. Maybe the stem seals are looser to compensate.

Angry My 2012 impreza consumes oil

At 20,300 miles my low level oil light had come on. Never had this happen before. I checked my oil level and sure enough I was a quart low. What the heck!!! Brand new car, never had this problem until now and at $7.49 for Valvolene 0W20 oil, that's a lot of money over time. Shouldn't be normal but the more I read it seems to be a very normal thing. Not happy!!!!

do the math on it, it isn't that much over time. yes it is extra, but really it is the cost of 1 extra oil change/yr. of course this is assuming 2qts/ 7500miles.

Stupid question: Is it safe to drive with the oil light on?

Oil dip stick says its full, but the light is still on. That, and I have to wait till the weekend in order to take it to the dealer.

If your oil level reads full and your oil level warning light is on, its most likely a faulty sensor. It should be safe to drive it until you get to the dealership to get looked at.

I agree about the fiscal aspect of oil. NOT a huge deal.
Theres no way to "do the math" when it comes to a consumers confidence in a major purchase being eroded.
If you're burning oil, and others arent, then you naturally want one of the "good" ones.
I doubt the components of an oil burning engine last as long as a properly operating one.

Sometimes the light takes a long time to turn off, but if you have the right amount of oil youre fine till you can get it somewhere. Make sure they know the correct amount- 5.3 quarts.

There's no reason to believe your engine won't last as long as any other.

If I were in your situation, I'd go with long drain intervals since the tired oil is being burned off and you're boosting the TBN with each quart you add.

I still think you're letting a relatively small issue ruin your enjoyment of a great car.

The seat helps to ruin it too. I dont see how owning this car for the last year+ has been enjoyable. I got a car that isn't "as good" as the ones that arent burning oil. My car is doing something I've never had any car, even pos cars do. Not enjoyable.
I enjoy the fuel economy and spacious interior. And the simplistic dash.

So you're going to let other people's cars decide how happy you are with yours?

Oil going to the valves can't be recovered, so it's burned by design. If you think adding oil is expensive, try dealing with a stuck valve.

Tighter rings might cost you several times in fuel what they save you in oil.

Provide you with 30+ MPG on an AWD platform that achieves excellent crash test ratings?
