Idle RPMS??? HELP!
MY00 RS Idles at about 500RPM
Is that normal? The car sounds WICKED weak at idle, like it's about to stall out. I plan on getting the PROECM ECU chip, not sure if I should do a ECU reset before that though, was hoping to only have to do it once. Cheers guys William

500RPM is a little too low. My car idles at somewhere from 635RPM to 670RPM (according to my SAFC). Have you done any tune-ups recently? If not, probably do those first to cure the problem. Maybe plugs are getting dirty or something. If that doesn't cure the problem, then Idle Air Conroller is getting dirty??

re:
Haven't started doing any mods yet.
Just picked the car up about 3 weeks ago. Was run through in the shop at the subbie dealership. Everything that needed servicing was either replaced or tuned. William |

I just swapped my stock Champion plugs for the often recommended NGK coppers. My car now idles around 500, maybe slightly less.

Look at your tach closely. The large lines starting at zero, then 500, then 1K. If you look closely there are no small lines representing 100-400 rpm. Basically if your tach needle points to 2-3 small lines below the 1K mark you are idling at ~700 rpm. If it was idling at 500 rpm your tach need would look like it moved maybe a mm, if at all, from 0. Basically the tach starts working @ 500 rpm. It is not graduated down in the low 500-0 rpms because you will never run that low...
Sort of confusing because it does not start on a linear scale from 0... See what I mean? Jon |

err when u say idle do u mean when first starting the car up? or in traffic at a light in neutral? or drive?
like this morning when i started the car up in my garage it (where its like 40 f) it idled at 1200 rpm for a few seconds (this seems a bit high to me -> in drive 4eat) then i took off in reverse is 1200 too high in that case? i just put in a k&n air filter yesterday that coulndt have done anything right? (i swear it feels a bit rougher today). |

using my OBD-II scanner...
When the car is warming up in the morning it idles at around 1200 RPM until it's warm. Then it drops down 700 (actually bounces from 687 to 700) after its fully warmed up. NC |

Idle
I bought my car about 6 months ago and I only recently changed the spark plugs, battery, oil (Mobil 1 Syntec), oil filter and air filter. I now realize most dealers would focus more on the general appearance of the car than its mechanical status. My advice is to have the tune-up done asap. This is gonna save you a lot of money and problems in the long run.
If this doesn't work, you might wanna see whether you can increase the idle speed by adjusting it. This might also be the cause especially if the car is bought as a second hand vehicle. You don't know what the previous owner did to it. He/she might have decreased the idle speed to save on gas. |
