2002 wrx crank no start
My buddy has just bought a 02 wrx hatch EJ205 automatic trans and we cant get it to start.
No major mods, intake, inlet, catback. We had low fuel pressure so we installed a new oem fuel pump and filter. I have spark, ~150psi on all cylinders, 1.9k ohms on the crank pos sensor, fully charged battery, and his sounds exactly like my working 02 wrx does while turning over so I don't believe the timing is off. I will verify timing tomorrow. The plugs come out wet with fuel so injectors are working. Scan tool shows no CELs. I can see the values of the TPS and ECT working on the scan tool. Occasionally it will fire once or twice and stop, but never start. It does not back fire like when timing is way off. Does anyone know what possible codes/tests the ecu runs if it never gets to start? Any ideas are appreciated, Thanks.

Sorry, good spark on passenger side coils. white connector up front, black connector on back. Makes no sense right :?

Update: Verified timing is ok. Cam position sensor works. Plugs were fouled out so bad it now runs only with throttle and new plugs. seems like fuel is way too rich so I have ordered a tactrix to verify. The seller said they "attempted" some type of tuning so no idea what state the ecu is in.

Consider resetting the ECU. http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/mainte...ecu-reset.html

I have reset the learned data in the ECU, but I think the fuel map is incorrect. Also the gas in the tank is really old so I am currently draining the tank. I am using test mode to cycle the fuel pump with a hose attached on the pressure side running into a gas can.

You may need to take the car to a dealership to flash the ECU to the stock map. They'll probably charge a couple hundred bucks. But if the PO was screwing around with the map, you really need to get rid of whatever they did. Only a professional tuner or a reliable Accessport map should ever be used.
Do you know anybody who has a similar MY WRX and an Accessport? It is possible to use it to flash a stock map or a reliable AP stage 2 map to this car and then give it back to its owner. This option is better than the dealership if it's available. |

Yes, I have a tuner that I will send the current map to and he will send me a tactrix stage 2 tune for the exact setup I have. I am not even going to run the engine until I verify the tune. It was extremely rich when it did start even for open loop cold start. It won't idle at all. Thanks for the suggestion, hopefully it's not a locked tune.

If it's got ethanol gas and has sat for a few months (especially if
tank was half full or less), there's a good chance of phase separation--with watery ethanol at tank bottom, where the fuel pump picks up. |

Yes, the fuel was really old. I have removed all the old fuel. I have verified the tune is 100% stock. I will be upgrading catback exhaust, verifying the downpipe cats are not clogged, catless up pipe, and fresh fuel tomorrow then I will report back.

I have replaced the up pipe with a catless, and the down pipe has no cats.
Now it starts then dies immediately. However if I unplug the MAF, it revs to 3k rpm and stays running until i shut it off. Fuel pressure is 43 before start, and jumps to 50 after it revs up to 1500 rpm and dies immediately. Also I swapped a known good MAF from another 02 wrx and it does the exact same thing. No CELs. Any ideas? |

I will verify the MAF wiring anyway. I checked over the manifold once already, but it's acting like a vacuum leak since it revs so high with no MAF connected. Is it correct that when you unplug the MAF it tends to run much richer in failsafe mode? That would explain why when it first starts and stalls its getting un-metered air, but when it revs to 3k when the MAF is disconnected its getting enough fuel.

AHA! it runs! yall are going to laugh, but it was a massive vac leak. The pcv valve was missing! the hose was tucked under the bypass pipe so i thought it was attached, but i used a mirror, a vape, and DUH it was just a open hole leaking smoke out of the intake. Thanks to everyone who suggested tips. Lesson learned, check for vac leaks.

While we are in the subject I’m running into a similar issue and I feel I’ve checked everything
Fuel pump primes , even used a pressure gauge to verify, Injectors are getting the signal to fire , tested this with noid light kit, Coil packs and plugs working, also tested that, Cam and crank sensor teeth pick up all there and not broken, Changed maps with no difference , No fault codes, All grounds connected -even added one to try that.. But no fuel in the combustion chamber, the injectors arnt the problem , I took them out and made sure I could blow through them hell I even swapped another pair of injectors and it made no difference Engine cranks strong but will not fire, Good compression to btw... |

If yours doesn’t crank that’s a totally different route then if it does, mine was fuel related , yours is power, ground, or signal related,
Check to see if you have power at the starter Make sure the ground strap is bolted to the trans, Make sure the exciter wire is plugged in to the back of the starter And when all that checks out hit the starter with a hammer lol Do you have dash lights, do you have a charged battery, does it even click when you turn the key |

Sounds like your maf sensor is in backwords, the connector should be facing your bumper, i had same issue after doing **** ton of mods, if u have it in backwords its reading as if the car is backfiring, so it will die immediately. Flip it around it will start right up and idle, you will not get a CEL when its in backwords
