This really sucks we are getting awesome snow right now and I can't go have fun in my awd car because of this lame ass nanny system. Anyone know if there's an after market flash or controller I can buy to disable this crap?

I find this odd because i had zero issues getting my 5spd to slide.

Mind you it wasnt entirely intentional but i would give it a little throttle, rear end started sliding out, let off throttle and the car straightened back out. So you guys are saying if it bury the gas pedal in the snow im not going to be able to slide through turns?

Just trying to get a grasp on the issue.

I'm sure someone els can explain it Better then me but basically the car will allow a little bit of slide where you are traveling in a different direction then your wheels are pointing but once you get over the very little thresh hold it will hit the bakes on one or more wheels to strighting you out. You will know when it's doing it cause you can hear the abs controller going off it sounds like really fast clicking or kind of grinding under your hood on the passenger side.

Not at this time, you can only hope. I was told by numerous performance parts manufacturers that there is little/less interest in the Impreza because its non-turboed.

A lot of newer cars do this unfortunately. "OFF" means "slightly less" and that is about it. I had a 2009 car (non Subaru) and when I turned off the ESC, it was actually off and there was no assist. Then in 2011 models of that car came out and turning off ESC still pretty much left everything engaged

Now with my 2012 Impreza, I don't even both messing with it after the first 5 minutes. This is unfortunate, because I had a great time with two older non-ESC Subarus. One of those cars was a 1993 Legacy wagon 5 speed. I had 4 studded snow tires and driving that thing sideways in the winter made me so giddy I could barely stay in the seat.

I really hope someone finds a way to disable/turn it off on command, it really takes the fun out of driving in the snow.

Yeah I don't think that button is very useful, seems to allow more wheel slip and that's it. My dealer said the only time you'd use it is if you were stuck in a ditch or something.

I also wish for the CVT you could manually set the front/rear power split at 50/50 for snow driving.

Yeah, that would be nice. I, guessing the 90/10 default split was for fuel economy purposes?

i thought i read the cvt had a 50/50 split most of the time. only went to 60/40 in some instances.

I thought it was a 60/40 split normally.

I dont think anyone knows that the CVT power split is, probably something closer to 90/10. The manual is the one with the 50/50 split

My dealer said it was 80/20 under normal driving conditions, but could not verify that from any other source I could find online.
And my understanding from what I could find is that it can send up to 50% to the back when needed, but no more.
Sometimes I think I can feel/hear it kick in when I am powering into a turn from a stop.

Seems we all heard something different about the cvt split. Anyone hear 70/30? Lol

As before, Subaru offers two different all-wheel drive systems in the 2012 Impreza: models with the five-speed manual transmission have a viscous-coupling limited-slip centre differential that distributes power 50/50 front to rear. Impreza's with the Lineartronic CVT have an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch that distributes power 60/40 front/rear under normal driving conditions, but can transfer more power to the rear wheels under certain circumstances.

everything I've read says 90/10 cvt and 50/50 for the MT because it has a viscous locking center differential. Meaning if one end or the other's rotational speed starts to vary from the other end it hydraulicly locks. So it's always 50/50 with a minor amount of slippage just to power the locking mechanism.

The CVT cars have an electronically controlled clutch that the computer controls. So it's mostly front wheel until they start to slip, then the compter engages the clutch to the rear wheels.

Next time I'm out and about in my 5 speed 2.0i I'll unplug the ABS unit and see what happens.

yeah, the 90/10 is what i thought i read as the default on the CVT. i guess it doesn't matter as long as it works

Yeah, it just works how the engineer's and marketing people decided it should work... Not necessarily how you decided it should work.

IMHO (as a mech engineer) for the CVT equiped cars it wouldn't be all that difficult for someone to engineer/design some sort of controller box that would allow the user to adjust that center lock up. Either it's on/off or 0-5v signal or something like that. Would just have to do some work to figure out what kinds of signals that the electronic clutch can receive.

But that won't change the VDC issue... That is purely software related, but again once the code gets cracked and is tuneable it can probably just be set within the computer. It all just depends on the demand and if its worth "mass producing" electronic gadgets that fix this. (OR a dedicated and skilled group of DYI folks who engineer and open source fix).

THIS!!! ^ ^ ^ ^

It pretty much completely negates any usefulness of the floppy paddle shifters.

I submitted a question on Subaru's website asking for the range of possible torque split for the CVT. They responded pretty quickly, but here's what they said:

We do not state a normal torque split for the AWD System equipped on our 2012 Impreza models with CVT. That is because the torque distribution in continually changing due to changing conditions.

that actually makes sense because it has sensors/etc to determine where to send the power, so it would always be changing depending on throttle, speed, turns, etc etc etc.

Yeah but when you just take off at 20% throttle in fair weather conditions, nothing is slipping or will be slipping. The car isn't trying to continuously adjust torque split to keep that 20% throttle under control. It has to have a default it runs at until something happens (full throttle application, wheel slip, turn rate/yaw sensor mismatch...) Making constant adjustments for no reason would just cause premature wear.

i would think we hopefully won't take that SOA response literally. i'm guessing it holds the 90/10 ratio fixed until some threshold if slippage is noted and then the adjustment takes place.

of course, i have no clue if that is really the case, and also since this is my first AWD, i really am just speculating because i like to as a scientist (which i am for my profession...just not an ME or auto industry scientist! )
