Default Where to buy new engine?

Looking to buy a new (used) EJ253 for 2008 Impreza 2.5i. Any suggestions on a specific seller? I have been looking at the JDM engines on eBay since they seem to have much lower mileage than most of the USDM salvage sellers. Is this a good idea?

I bought a JDM engine and have no regrets. The only difference between both is they are tuned for a the higher octane gas used in Japan.

You can buy a jdm engine at a ton of places but you'll need a new front subframe if you go turbo as they're notched for the downpipe. You might be able to get away with bashing yours in til it fits, not too sure.

I'd suggest not purchasing from j-spec auto as they've been accused (with good proof) of stealing cars in Japan, taking them to a chop shop, and then importing the parts to the US and Canada. Buyer beware.

Do you have any idea what it would take to bash in the engine subframe? I'm sure you don't.

All I have seen re: J-Spec Auto of stealing cars in Japan is accusations with no ACTUAL proof. All circumstantial with references to pictures of alleged stolen cars and something similar on J-Spec's site. That is not actual proof.

J-Spec Auto, or any other JDM importer, buy parts from companies in Japan who acquire parts for them.

Personally, I have zero issue purchasing from J-Spec Auto if the need arises, and would continue to do so until ACTUAL proof of their direct involvement is produced.

Saying J-Spec auto has been receiving stolen goods is one thing. Stating they are directly involved is another.

How do you know that any used part, from anyone for any thing, was not stolen before you bought it?

Nope. Going back bone stock. (First car for my son). Only looking at the JDM replacements because they have much lower mileage than anything I can find from US salvage.

Was planning to just rebuild his, but machine shop costs started adding up to well over what I was expecting. ($1500+ for assembled long block).

Well, that's the problem and why people buy JDM motors. Rebuild costs are quite high so, financially, buying a JDM is cheaper / simpler / faster than going the rebuild route.

No need to be a dick. You need to relax, homeboy. Accusations work both ways, so unless you've got proof that they didn't, you should shut your piehole. Japanese owners of said stolen cars have posted their personal pictures up on FB comparing their former stolen cars with front cuts available for sale on j-spec if you cared enough to look into it.

Check out JDM Racing Motors then. They have an '04 RS motor for $795. They're located in Montreal though, so you'll most likely have to get it shipped to you for another $300 or so.

You're the only one being a dick here.

What are you, 12? Spend all you're time on facebook under the covers at night so Mommy doesn't see what you are doing?

What are you doing under the covers anyway?!

BTW, if you HATE J-Spec motors, then why are you recommending JDM Racing Motors? JDM Racing Motors and J-Spec Auto are sister companies and work together all the time.

Are you now saying JDM Racing Motors are also selling stolen cars?

Let's see some actual proof that will stand up in court and not some child who is posting junk on Facebook making claims he can't actually support. Typical social media bs.

I've bought from both JDM Racing Motors and J-Spec auto and would do so again without hesitation

That's not how this works...that's not how any of this works Facebook being offered as proof of aaaaaannnnyyyyything...wow.

BTW, newb coming in with a join date of this same friggin month to attack one of the pretty well respected members on here, when he was being quite reasonable in his tone, is not really gonna get ya taken seriously. GTFO with that nonsense.

But yes, OP, those are respected vendors. Looked into them while looking for my car as well, as a backup if SOA hadn't come through for me. Back to stock is perfect for a newer driver, good luck!

What does it matter how old my account is? Who cares. And J-Spec has acknowledged, admitted, and apologized for doing it.

+1 for JDM Racing motors.

Professional Distributor and they compression test their engines before selling.

Mine arrived via UPS freight for $300, came pressure washed, minimal rust on turbo down-pipe and other parts/flanges. The turbo shaft play is perfect.

Zero complaints. Just take the extra time to do the valve cover gaskets since the engines already have 54k miles.

Cheers, (and yes, this is my first post)

You need to go back and read that again.
What that actually says is that J-Spec states that they * may * have sold some stolen parts. Nothing has yet to be proven that they were directly involved, as some others have claimed.

Typically, when some so-called source makes unsubstantiated claims against some company, said company naturally comes out apologizes * if * they were involved.

That's called CYA just in case it turns out to be true.

Again, being a middle-man, which J-Spec is, and being used/duped to sell stolen parts is nothing new in a world economy. Happens all the time, unfortunately.

Obviously J-Spec is/was using what they believed to be a trusted supply source. That does not make them guilty of being directly involved, ie; they were working with the Japan source to actively seek out and steal cars for them to be chopped up and sent to North America for sale as illegal goods.

Can always use www.car-part.com and see what salvage yards have engines.
