Default 2012 Impreza CVT shift delay

I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is typical with a CVT transmission and/or the 2012 Impreza.

Shifting from Park to Drive
or
Park to Reverse
or
Reverse to Drive

All comes with about a 2 second delay in the transmission actually shifting.

When shifting into drive the car almost lurches forward once it engages, possibly due to how I'm holding the brake in, I think it's more that it still catches me off guard.

Is anyone else having this issue? I checked with Uncle Google and it seems like there are a lot of message boards across multiple make/models where people are saying the same general thing, but the same thing keeps coming out "it's my first CVT, is this normal?" with no real info if it is.

Its normal. My wife's Nissan Rogue is the same way. You get used to it.

The two other CVTs I have driven do the same thing. The Impreza 2.0i has less of a delay than my previous 2007 Nissan Altima.

Noticed this on my car too. Only happens when going to Drive (from any other position).

It almost feels as if something is sticking inside the transmission, or as if there is not enough fluid in the trans. I know that when an old truck takes some time to shift between gears, its a sign that a rebuild is coming soon, or that the trans fluid is shot/low. I'm bringing it in this weekend to have them check it out. Sometimes it clunks pretty hard when it finally does shift into drive, and that is with my foot on the brake and the car not rolling at all. Other times it feels like it partially engages, and i can see the revs fall slowly, instead of the normal drop rate to low idle. I'll report back asap for all who are interested.

Just as a side note, I noticed today that when the weather is warmer (~45-50°F) and the car is warmed up, the transmission shifts from gear to gear like a normal auto. Really no extended delay at all. Usually its been 3-4, maybe even a 5 second delay. But for some reason (probably because it heard me say I would take it in) today at lunch it was fine.

Just wanted to let you all know, Dealer say this is normal when its cold. That was it. I asked them if the transmission fluid was low, would it do this. They said yes, but all the cars are filled at the factory to the exact level. They didn't want to waste their time checking, so off I went. Doesn't seem to be getting better or worse. Just slow when its cold, and almost normal speed when the trans is warm.

I experience that too, it took me by surprise when I backed it out of my garage for the first time, I guess its something we'll get used to.

Mine does this too and my older Saturn SW2 did it as well (it had a regular 4 speed auto). I assume this is due to cold fluids (cold = thick) making things move into place slowly. The trans also seems to respond more slowly to throttle inputs when it is cold. It all seems to normalize after 5 minutes.

I still haven't gotten used to this yet, it just feels delayed. Do you guys step on the gas right away after shifting or do you wait a couple seconds until its "in gear"?

I've gotten into the habit of waiting until I feel the trans kick in, to the point where if I drive a regular auto it catches me off guard.

I wait until I feel it engage. No sense in putting extra stress on the trans if I don't need to.

Yup, notable reverse-to-drive delay backing out of a space in a sloped lot today (on an 80+ degree day). Felt like I was rolling backwards since I had stepped off the brake already. Surprised the heck out of me. Next time I'll be prepared.

If you shift to drive a few feet before you stop reversing, you'll be in motion right away, with no driveline shocks...

Yeah I wait for it to it to shift into gear too, unless I really have to, which I haven't done yet.

On a related note do you guys notice when you park your car and pull your key out, you hear a mechanical whirling sound, is that the CVT disengaging?

That is the fuel system de-pressurizing. The extra fuel is pumped back from the throttle body to the tank through a small return line. Every fuel injected car does this, some are quieter that others. Some are a constant whirring sound, others have a rhythmic "knock". Also, if it is not that, it may just be the CD player cycling. When you turn the car on, the CD player preps itself to be ready, whether or not you are playing the CD. When you turn the car off, it cycles back to a default setting. Sometimes this is confused with the fuel return noise and vice-versa.

You have the 2012 Impreza too, do you notice it? Both scenarios do makes sense though.

I'll have to listen for it tonight. These noises are normal, I'll try to pinpoint which one is more prominent. Neither noise has caught my attention, but I wasn't exactly listening for them either.

Well I don't hear it except when I pull into my garage, it seems to be the fuel pump, I would think.
