Those of us who have replaced our head units are very familiar with this process.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but didn't know where else to put it. 2012 impreza 5 door base model. Funny thing happened just now. My car is off, been off for almost seven hours. Taking a walk I hear a noise from the car. Like a small electric motor running or an electric fan coming from the left rear. I ran and grabbed my keys and when I turned the car to acc it stopped. What the heck is this? The car is off!

Edit, it was super quiet outside so I heard it. Usually I wouldn't have.

I haven't heard it on my Impreza, but my TDI did the same thing. Cars these days have so many systems that monitor many different things all the time. I would assume it's normal.

Anyone know how to remove the roof rails on the 2012 impreza sport? I'm in the process of installing some spot lights on my cargo basket and would prefer not to drill through the roof. My plan is to go through where the roof rails connect. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You need to pull out the headliner and deal with all the holes left when you pull the rails. Someone here has already removed the rails, they can give you all the relevant info.

^^ Thanks, do you think this is my best option for wiring? I would really prefer not to have a visible drill hole through my roof. Any suggestions?

I've installed rails in a base impreza. The drill holes I had to drill were very tight, so I'd say it's unlikely you'll be able to fit a wire through the screw hole. Not only that, but i'd be wary of water leakage. The holes must be watertight with some type of sealant after rail removal.

Also, you need the bars for non rail impreza's.

All I know is that there's something that sounds like a fan that runs to reduce emissions. It's in the owners manual as well

leave the rails and run the wire out next to the inside of one of the rails, then forward to the lights. You will still need to remove the headliner to run the wire (I think).

Sorry I'm not really understanding what you are saying.

I plan on leaving the rails on, just want to take them off to run the wires into the car under the rails and then put them back on.
Where are you suggesting I run the wires into the car?

Leave the rails as is, drill one hole next to the inside of a rail and run two black wires along the inside of the rail, you will need one hole, and need to run wires inside the car obviously so you will need to pull the headliner.

If you are putting on lights, you need a dedicated line to the battery so you don't fry anything (like the fuse for the dome light). But you could trace that wire down and run your wires next to it.

With the rails on you are not going to see a wire on the inside of the rail unless you are really trying...

Also for anyone interested in a footwell illumination kit for our 2012-2013 impreza models I've come across this:

http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/700...SFJ100Rev1.pdf

It's listed under the 2013 accessory installation guide, but I don't see why it wouldn't work on a 2012 model as well. It's about $120-130 online from what I have found.
That's pretty expensive for some wires and LEDs and it looks like a pain to install too.

How long does the sound last? On the TDI I had, the sound it made when the car was off only lasted 1 or 2 sec.

It stays on a while, long enough to hear it, and spend a little while walking around the car to try and figure out where it is originating. It may be a PZEV thing -- mine does it randomly and sometimes long after the car has been driven.

I just got my driver license. I felt like sharing my driving with my Canadian CVT Impreza.

Canadian Model with eco display(night is the cause of blurry display. I will do another drive later)
2:16 Manual mode
7:37 Automatic mode (interesting RPM needle)

What is the deal with the remote start for late '12s and all '13s? A little research seems to say Subaru stopped selling the remote starter that was offered for the '12s at launch, then they came out with a new one? My dealer said they could install one on a '13, but I'd end up with one remote for the doors and another for the starter?

Well a word or warning for those in the wooded areas.. My wife has been hearing an acorn rolling around inside of the hood. I confirmed it was actually inside the hood, little critter must have gotten in through the two 2" holes near the windshield cowl.

So I finally got around to fishing those acorns out. Took off the heat blanket on the underside of the hood.... The critter had full access to get under the blanket from within those two holes. It had chewed a big of the blanket and collected a nest at the base of the hood channel. The critter wasn't around but with the blanket off I was able to easily clean it out and get the bits of acorn out.

I have covered those two holes with some tape and hope that's enough or a deterrent to keep it away.
