Currently I drive a Tacoma, and generally my MPG never varies more than 3 mpg, unless I'm towing something.

So I bought my car in November and even from the first tank was seeing about 31mpg avg over the tank, pretty close to 50 50 split highway and city driving. Changed my oil at 3000 miles to amsoil OE (middle of December), and since have seen my numbers drop. Now my commute is 70-80% highway miles at 60mph, so my numbers should have jumped up, but they have gone down to low 29's per tank.
Engine is loosening up with more miles, fresh oil, more highway miles in its "sweet spot" for speed, but my mileage has dropped. I live in GA, so not terribly brutal winters, but definetly some morning warm up idle. I know temperature and winter blended fuel have some effect. Im scratching my head trying to understand why my numbers are dropping when they should be rising. It sounds crazy, but any way the change to OE made a negative difference in efficency? |

You'll get better performance from the 5MT. If manual shifting is something you enjoy, then get the 5MT. I've read posts from many CVT owners wishing they had bought a 5MT. I haven't read any 5MT owners wishing they had bought a CVT.

CVT. Have always checked tire pressure as well.

Just to compare my last car was a 2011 VW Jetta TDI so it's not like anybody can say I don't know what power feels like. |

Great car though except for the CVT mpg, and some people have reported inordinate oil consumption. |

I wouldn't put good oil in it until 10k miles or so though myself, then I'm going with the Signature Series, which doesn't need changing until 20k miles or more. The poor mileage is probably just due to cooler temperatures - I forget exactly how much temperature variation it takes, but in most of the country typical winter air is 10% denser than summer air, which is more wind resistance. Even in GA I would expect a 5% change in density. |

Let me also qualify my statement. I don't hate the CVT, I just don't want one for myself. I'm fanatical about driving a stick and wouldn't own a car any other way. I have this sticker on my car to show my loyalty to the transmission: Having said that, whenever I see someone post the question "Should I get the 5MT or the CVT", my answer is always going to be 5MT. If someone is willing to drive a stick, or is enthusiastic about driving a stick, then he should drive a stick. Don't let the Impreza clutch's high catch point get in the way of driving the 5MT--you'll get used to it quickly enough. For those who can't or don't want to drive a stick, the CVT is a fine choice (especially now that Subaru has provided the software update that reduces the annoying engine braking characteristic many people have complained about). I'm very pleased to hear that you're happy with your Impreza with CVT after coming from a TDI with DSG. The lack of torque from the Impreza was a concern of mine, too, but once I learned the shape of the Impreza's power band, I figured out how to make it perform well. |

Oy, what a frickin' disaster that TDI was. Sheesh. It continues to amaze me that such a beautiful car could simultaneously be such a piece of crap. |

Yeah, I'd love a BRZ with a stick. It's definitely on my radar as a car to consider later in life when practicality isn't so important. It would be nice if they introduce a version of the BRZ with more horsepower and torque, but it's excellent even in its current configuration. I get nervous when I see hyper-sports car companies like Ferrari introduce models that can't be purchased with a stick. They defend themselves by saying (accurately, I suppose) that the Ferrari with the dual-clutch auto tranny is faster than it would be with a stick. I don't care. I'm not trying to win any races. I simply enjoy the engagement of rowing my own gears, and I don't care if it takes me 0.5 sec longer to get up to speed. It also pisses me off when companies decide that higher-end versions of cars can't be purchased with a stick. I can afford an Impreza Limited. I would have liked a sunroof, leather, and so on. But I wasn't willing to buy a Limited because I couldn't get one with a stick, so I bought a Sport Premium and modified it to overcome some of its shortcomings (leather steering wheel and shift knob; Pioneer HU; and so on). At least you can still buy a loaded-to-the-gills Porsche 911 with a stick (7 speed, no less! ). |

I know right? Aside from the mess of problems with the DSG and HPFP, the car was awesome!!

oh hyundai. I am 100% anti cvt, I prefer a regular auto to the cvt and I have driven the majority of offerings on the market. I find myself not paying attention much in the cvt because of the rubber band feeling, you just kinda dooze off while driving, if I had to do that in a commute I would go nuts. Also lets be reasonable when I want to drop this car into gear and wind her up it really comes alive as it should just like my old civic, I guess I should keep this objective but oh well. You do get use to the catch point and relax quite nicely into the car I have been forcing myself to drive fuel efficiently aka 60mph, winter numbers are winter numbers, summer I will see just how high I can go with mpg. This summer I could easily pull a solid 35mpg driving conservitively on highways, daily however I like a litte more pep in my step so I will get on her when I need to especially based on whats playing over the radio. |

Good question. I haven't thought that far ahead. I wonder how well a BRZ with dedicated snow tires would do in the winter time? Certainly not as rock-solid as our Imprezas with snow tires. But would it be reasonable?

I think the fact that due to it's lightweight, front engine, and RWD -- probably not great even with snows, and definitely not Adirondack worthy.

But this decision is many years away, and the auto industry is certain to change a lot in that time, so we'll see what happens. |
