Default Ecutek to OpenSource to Ecutek

I just read the sticky regarding ecutek and locking the flash, and have a question regarding the licensing.

I have ecutek now. I may go to a tuner that only does Opensource because they are more available, and cheaper, than the local Ecutek tuner. Both are highly recommended SOCAL tuning shops.

My question is, if I remove the Ecutek flash, and flash with OpenSource, can I revert back to Ecutek without losing my license? (04 sti, no immobilizer)? Is there a special way in which ecutek can be removed to prevent losing the license? I was told the license goes by VIN number, so doesnt than mean I keep it no matter what tuning flashware I use? Or am I stuck paying the 600 license fee if I switch from Ecutek to OpenSource to Ecutek?

The ecutek license doesn't go by VIN. Infact Ecutek themselfs can't track what license was sold to who. The most ecutek/protuner could do is see what dealer flashed the car last, including date/time/notes/flash count.

Everytime ECUTEK software is connected to a ecu it checks for a license, if the ecutek software doesn't see a license it asks the protuner if they want to "install one". $$$$

When the car is flashed back to stock the ecu gets unlocked, and the license stays in the ecu. EcuTek software can not remove the license.

BUT if someone flashes a STOCK open source file over the stock unlocked ecutek stock file you will LOSE you license.

--> Some times pissed off ecutek dealers will overwrite the stock unlocked ecutek file with a open source file so if you ever choose to return to the ecutek they get to bang you for the $150 license fee again.

Once you get the car flashed back to stock from the ecutek dealer make sure you backup ecu with a opensource cable. If you dont have one I'm sure someone at a Subaru meet near you will.

EcuTek changes a bunch of crap in the ECU, so if your getting protuned with open source its best to use a non-ecutek map

Can a non-Ecutek tuner remove an ecutek map/flash and install thier own OpenSource flash?

Built STI,

What is the best way to get the ECU back to stock? Can I send it to an ecutek tuner, or do I have to mail it to England? (A few days down time isn't an issue...)
