Default Toyota Announce All-New Four Cylinder Engine For 2009 Toyota Highlander

Quote:
Toyota will soon be shipping their 2009 Highlander with their 2.7-litre four-pot engine, offering customers a choice below that of the premium-priced V6 model - turning the Highlander into one of the most fuel efficient, low emitting, highest performing and best value SUVs in its segment.

Importantly, the Highlander's new addition allows for residence in the top rankings for fuel consumption, returning 22 mpg on the combined cycle and peaking at 27 mpg on the highway. Its EPA rating is as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (designating its status as emitting half the amount of average vehicleson the market). There is however little compromise in performance and noise is also on a par to its V6 sibling.

The 2.7-litre four-cylinder powerplant's intelligent variable valve timing system allows for optimum balance between performance and efficiency, with engine output at 187 hp and 180 lb/ft of torque available across engine speeds. Mated to an 'electronically-controlled automatic overdrive transmission with intelligence (ECT-i)', acceleration from 0-60 mph is swiftly achieved in 9.7 seconds.

The new engine will come as standard on the well-equipped two-wheel-drive, two-row model and be packaged alongside air con, a six-speaker audio system, power doors, locks and windows, cruise control and keyless entry.

With the introduction of the new four-pot, the Highlander is the first vehicle in its class to offer three powerplant options: 2.7, 3.5 V6 and 3.5 V6 Hybrid.

I have to wonder if the real world mileage will be much better than that of the V6. Seems like it's more of a weight/aerodynamic issue than one of displacement. Our RX350 (basically the same thing as the Highlander/Camry) gets about 25 mpg on the freeway...

It's a new design, more closely related to the 1.8 Dual VVT-i engine in the Corolla than the 2.7 in the Hilux or the Tacoma, which IIRC, has been around since 1994.

Yup, this will be a roller rocker, hydraulic lifter, dual VVT engine. I'm wondering when this will get into the Rav4. The best part is that they've mated it with the 6AT. They really need to get that transmission across the line to the Rav4, 4 cyl Camry, and possibly the Corolla.

Wow, that's gotta be the biggest 4 banger I've ever heard of. I bet it's torquey as hell - rated at "only" 180 lb/ft, but I bet that torque comes on way low.

You sound like a huge toyota fanboy Hasn't the tocoma had a 2.7l I4 for years?

Chevy Colorado has a 2.9l I4. A stroked and bored EJ25 has 2.7l

I would love for the 2AZ-FE to die a quick and clean death. Along with Toyota's mediocre 4ECT automatic, it's an underpowered, inefficient and outdated drivetrain compared to Honda's quicker, smoother and more efficient K24 coupled to their 5 speed automatic. The only thing worse than the Toyota AZ is the Nissan QR25, which gets terrible mileage and seems to have a recall each year for engine fire issues.

Well, Toyota foolishly enlarged the current 2.4 engine to 2.5 liters for this year's RAV4, along with a impressive 4EAT automatic, so I don't think it's getting the 2.7 and six-speed anytime soon.

I would love a Scion xB with the new 2.7 though.

If people complained about the more powerful 3.0l in the lighter Tribeca... this engine in the gargantuan Highlander will make this vehicle about as peppy as a matchbox toy.

The Highlander makes no attempt at being sporty though. 0-60 in ~10sec is fine for most people.

its not about the size but the compression ratio. ej25 has lower compression.
