when i shoot racing which is probably 75% of my work, i shoot jpeg only. Very minimal editing is done to 99% of my racing shots. Clients want photos either during a racing or within hours of a completed race, so my edits are 5min or less typically. but when i do portraits or individual auto photoshoots i shoot RAW+Jpeg so i have both that i can refer to when doing my edits.

Doing self portraits is one of the things that keeps me sane in my work, definitely allows me to try new things for when actual clients want them. This also got favorited by Adidas Basketball on Twitter so that made me a little happy haha

Good Concept! Exposure is getting hot on your left shoulder. My eye goes straight to it. Just constructive criticism don't take it personal.

I really wish I got into this when I was younger. I could've seen myself doing it as a career.

Doing photography as a career is very difficult since just about anyone these days can take an iphone and make it into art. Thats why most do it as a side gig.

I would just like to make enough to make it a self sustaining hobby at some point but that might be a stretch.

Theres was actually a drain underneath the car, so the street dipped a little. But I assure you its leveled. Me too I wish I would have started earlier in life. It's a fun hobby and getting paid to do it at the same time is pretty awesome. |

I will say that its very hard to make a 100 percent living at it. You have to wear alot of different hats. Marketing, Business, Billing, finances and thats even before you pick up a camera. And don't get me started on Small business taxes. The feds want your money.
For me school was great and I got a piece of paper that says I did it. I could do school forever! I love it! I have friends that got masters Degrees from Brooks and other prestigious art schools but they still are behind in some ways from lack of real world experiences. But it comes eventually. But I learned so much more by working next to great photographers and some no so good ones. Learn how to Light, and how to do the Business of Photography. But its always a learning situation. Whether its software or a new piece of equipment. Its all what you put in!! |

Love this thread. I took a photography class this last semester (very basic stuff), and being among the few people who actually attended lectures I really enjoyed it. Didn't get a huge amount of instruction but at the very least it forced me to go into different environments to try my hand at it. I used my pops Canon rebel with a few different lenses, and I miss it already. :/
Anyway here are a few shots that I liked from the class, along with my attempts at photographing my own car. I'd love any sort of input. I know this one is very different from all other photos in here but I'm sorting through my albums and thought it was a cool shot. Took it back when I used to breed ball pythons. I haven't had any real experience with photoshop or lightroom or anything before and not having my own DSLR I don't feel the need to make the investment, so any editing was done in iPhoto. Art institute in Pittsburgh. Some of the kids here are just absolute garbage, and others are brilliant. Just depends who you hang around.
I understand this a car forum, but maybe we should start doing some type of contest thing in here, with of course different topics and subjects. Just to see what everyone likes to shoot besides our subi's. |

since we're diverging a bit here from cars into some of the other stuff we shoot . . . .
If no one has figured it out yet, LP, night photography, and long exposure stuff is what makes me tick . . . . And I'm looking forward to setting up a studio downstairs in the very near future. Can't wait to have a a studio set-up and all the possibilities that kind of lighting will open up for me. Been saving up for it for ages. Anyway, back to regularly scheduled content .. . . |

Yeah, pretty much all of Japan is eye and brain candy - even the trashy parts. I loved it there so much and can't wait to go back. I caught a flight up from Okinawa (where I lived) to Tokyo and backpacked for a month through Tokyo, Kamakura, Kyoto, Lake Biwa, Himeji, Okayama, Hiroshima, then back down to Okinawa from Iwakuni. My daily agenda pretty much consisted of wake up, shower, coffee, walk/hike/ride the train around and take photos for about 8-10 hours, come back to where ever I was staying that night, upload, review, dinner, sleep, repeat. It was pretty effing glorious.

I've never taken a class on photography. I learned it all from the internet. I currently have at least one shoot per week (wedding, product, portrait, or sports), and I don't think I would want any more. If I have more than 2-3 weddings in a month I start to feel burnt out. I don't make anywhere close to a living off of it, and I don't mind that. It's a nice supplemental income for my wife and me. And, yes, we do pay taxes on the business. So far I still enjoy it. I hope it stays that way!

Here are a couple from today. Didn't go how I originally envisioned it and I'm not thrilled with the results, and they seem to look darker on Flickr than they did in LR. Was kind of a meh day all around though. Not to mention, I just about never take photos of my own car.
Also - has this ever happened to any of you: Whenever I would screw on the CPL my shots would come out fuzzy as hell. Take it off, crisp and clear. Back on again, fuzzy. Wtf. I've used both the lens and the CPL before with no problems, although not together before. But why would they disagree, as it were. I've never had this problem before and I'm a little baffled. Any ideas? |
