Subaru sales up again in May
BY MAX SHOWALTER JUNE 2, 2010

Led by the Outback model, Subaru continues to rack up higher sales numbers than last year.

A report released this morning by Subaru of America Inc. shows the automaker sold 23,667 vehicles last month a whopping 35 percent increase over the 17,505 units sold in May of 2009.

Among vehicles manufactured at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. plant in Lafayette:

Sales of the Outback climbed 124 percent, to 7,630 units.

Sales of the Legacy rose by 19 percent, to 3,586 vehicles.

Sales of the Tribeca fell by 66 percent, to 226.

Among Subaru models built in Japan, sales of the Forester rose by 29 percent, to 7,976 units, while the Impreza posted a fractional increase on sales of 4,249 units.

Year-to-date, Subaru total sales have risen by 40 percent over the first five months of 2009, to 104,359 units.

Can Subi keep the ball rolling considering that dealers are running low in stock (WRX/STI)?

WRXs and STIs have very little impact on the bottom line. Enthusiast models being low on stock just means they'll sell very well again when they hit the lots.

Perry Subaru in Virginia Beach has virtually nothing on their lot and it's been like that for a long long long time.

RK Subaru has even less.

I was one of the WRX sales! Even tho inventory is low, you can still talk em down to invoice.

My brother began Subaru shopping today....Good to have him back as I am currently the only one in the family who doesn't have a Toyota/Lexus.

Ditto....Hard finding the WRX I wanted though (stripped down).

I'm a double dipper though, '10 Forester 2.5x in March, '10 WRX in May. Subaru gotta love me.

Cool

226 Tribecas sold in May! Kiss the Tribeca goodbye, I think, as they are selling at a lower pace than the BAJA did before they pulled the plug on them!
'Tis a shame, as the Tribeca is a really good vehicle!
Otherwise, good news for Subaru sales in general!
Still keeping MY BAJA, though, until a new one is built!
Keep it under 90, folks!

Do they even have Tribecas in inventory?

Can't sell a vehicle you can't get.

Some do! Where I bought my Tribeca has ONE new one in stock and about 4 used ones.
But, you are correct, if they don't have any on the lot, how serious are they in selling them?
This is what happened to the BAJA's, and is happening to the Tribeca! Soon to be an orphan!
Keep it under 90, folks!

It's a choice - make an Outback or make a Tribeca and we need all the Outbacks we can make. Thanks to all those who bought a new Subie last month.

Legacy/Outback < Forester/Impreza . I wonder if the profits on the cars are also that way.

I know that.

But it should be impetus to look into expanded production.

And it should not be viewed out of context as necessarily a failure of Tribeca as a vehicle, but as a failure of it's inventory level.

Just as I have contended that Legacy wagon was not a failure as a vehicle, it's inventory level starved it, and CAFE regs made it all the more appealing to push Outbacks, instead, anyway.

Statistics (Tribeca sales numbers) don't tell the whole story. WHY those numbers are so low, is important, too.

And the WHY is low inventory, because SOA chooses to build Outbacks instead. Not a value judgement, just a fact.

And frankly, Outback and Tribeca 5-passenger are not that far apart anymore. Just that Tribeca is better looking inside and out, for that type of vehicle. (And the Tribeca uses a more widely standard wheel bolt pattern...) The specs other than appearance are pretty darn close.

There is no more Tribeca 5-passenger version from the 2010 model year. Another point is that the payload capacity of the Tribeca is over 1500 lbs, while that of the Outback is around 900 lbs (if I am not mistaken)......that is a big difference for carrying people/material.

Broken record here. Let the deal with Toyota expire and get that massive second line producing for us. We have lost 10 to 15 customers to other makes in the last 2 months because we didn't have Tribecas. That doesn't sound like a lot, but that is a good number for us here.

And WHEN you drop the Tribeca, if you try and make a 7 passenger Outback; I can tell you now, it would be a massive fail here. Our dealership also has Nissan. They will just walk 50 yards to get a Murano and we'll lose even more sales.

The local dealer here sold 40 new subies last month(VERY good for them) and on the last allocation from Subaru, they were only offered 6 new ones

Needless to say they were disappointed.

I've noticed the same thing and wondered what's up... could be worse I guess, the Hummer dealer down the road for example...
