Trouble getting into reverse
I've always found it to kind of hard to get my RS into the reverse gear. Is this normal? If it doesn't directly go in when I first try it, I usually pop it in first and inch the car up and then put it into reverse, seems to work fine everytime that way.
Just thought I'd post to see what everyone thinks. All Japanese made cars I've ever had have had this problem. Thanks, Tom Richardson, Jr.

Yep, reverse doesn't have a synchro. Try double clutching & going into 2nd first.

I've found, in the five days that I've owned mine, that just letting the clutch out in neutral, putting it back in, and trying reverse again often works.

more harder than reverse.. my first gear is a female dog to get in. Luckily the car's got a lot of torque, so I use 2nd a lot, but still. Any fixes for this?

All you have to do is release the clutch again in neutral..then press the clutch back in and move to revers..solves it everytime for me

I've tried that, but it only seems to work if I'm on slight incline. Taking the clutch out in neutral makes the car move slightly... reverse is easy to get in to then.
Oh well... Jap cars, gotta love 'em! Tom Richardson, Jr. |

I have to agree with Swivel here, put it in neutral, let the clutch out and stick it in in reverse.

Wow,
glad i wasn't the only one halucinating here! I've had problems with my 1st and reverse since when i got my car. My silly dealer couldn't seem to find the problem....that's not saying much because they only drove my car 2/10th's of a mile. I was beginning to suspect the clutch or synchro's....any ideas or is it just standard for 5spd subaru's? BTW, it's a LOT worse during the winter time. I was also thinking of flushing the Trannie & Differential Fluid...i've got 26k miles...it couldn't hurt? -chrisC |

Reverse on my RS would do that too. Sometimes I would have to rough it up some. I would sometimes grind 1st gear when downshifting. I would grind 3rd on hard acceleration but the STI tranny mount fixed all that. Now the shifts are smooth, even Reverse.

I've owned manual transmission cars for over 30 years - every one has always had some small problem going into reverse. I just let the clutch partway out, slowly, for a moment, as I move the shift lever into reverse, slips right in.

My MY98 OBS had that trouble getting into reverse, as does the MY00. The dealer concurred that most Imprezas have this difficulty.

Bah just shove it into any of th forward gears (I prefer 1st or 3rd) and then shift to reverse. No problemo.
This is the first time I ever encountered such a thing. My mom's mx-6 has no such problem and so is the probe, rx-7 etc.... |

I complained about this to my dealer many times, and finally a friend suggested to put it in 3rd, then over and down to reverse. Don't even need to double clutch. It's much better without that grinding noise!
