Default Honestly, is there anything wrong with the 08 WRXs?

I've been lurking here for awhile now. I used to drive an RS and then went to another brand and now am thinking about another subaru

the 09s seem to be all the rage, and I've seen plenty of threads here about how 08 owners feel violated by the release of the 09s, but as someone who would mod the car anyways, is there really anything wrong with the 08s? I'd be looking at the hatch...

I ask because there are some GREAT deals on the 08 hatches out there and I figure if I'm going to be spending $$$ on mods anyways why not save upfront... Is the 08 less appealing from a tuning perspective?

sorry for the noob thread...

i have the 08 WRX hatch. it's a great car, though i have some gripes with it. now that it's at stage 2, with suspension upgrades, it is what it should've been.

out of the box, the car has the following problems:
- poor interior finish (lots of clicks and clacks as the cheap plastic flails about, especially on A-pillars). it's really annoying when you're driving on the highway to the symphony of ill-fitting plastic clicks.
- soft suspension and pencil-thin swaybars result in mucho roll
- crappy stock tires. they seem to slip and squirm a lot
- the shifter is really rubbery and cheap-feeling. some bushings and a better (shorter) shifter will fix that, though

as for the paint issue, i've never had a problem. but i also put some (RA) mudguards on it pretty much right away.

anyway, if i were you, i'd just get the 09 after the demand dies down a bit (to get a better deal). the 09 is a better car and OEM it should be close to what an 08 WRX is at stage 2. that way, you don't have to muck around with this crap and you get to keep your warranty :S.

all the best,

Simon

Out of the box it is less of a car. If that's something you can live with, and you're going to mod it anyway, go ahead and get the 08 for a steal and mod away. People just like the 09 because the hp and handling bump, but those things can be made up for by modding. However, it will violate the warranty. So in the end it's really up to you

The only major differences as far as I know is the turbo, tires, springs, sway bars, steering rack, front grill, and rear spoiler. Everything on that list cept the steering rack usually gets swapped out at some point.

There's nothing wrong with the 08's. They are great cars. The 09's FEEL a bit more substantial due to the power and suspension, but if you are going to mod your car as far as better tires, a larger turbo and better dampers, they might as well be the same car. The changes other than the turbo and suspension are all very minor, even the steering hardly feels any different.

Still, the price difference between the two isn't that much. I got my 08 for 23000 otd. I got my 09 for 23,784 or something otd. There will be incentives on the 08, but if you have a change to go for the car that is better right off the lot, why not? I mean at the least maybe you'll decide you don't want to swap out the turbo because of the VASTLY improved powerband in the 09's.

Yes, but getting it all at once is much easier.

if i were in the market for a new wrx, and were eyeing the '08s, i would wait until the release of the '10, see how it impacts the '09. you never know, it might be the one youve always wanted.

That's neat. Just a few months ago I saw many threads about either piston slap or even catastrophic engine failure.

If you don't intend to tune for a few years or at all then yes its convenient, but how many of us keep our cars stock?
